Thats the question. Though is will you get a proven talent for 4 mil or will that cost 6 mil.

You pay whatever market value is relative to talent.

Assuming IU is working on ~$12 million budget which has been rumored, paying $6mil for Haralson would be wildly irresponsible, as it would be for all of maybe 1 or 2 players. Have to think IU has probably spent close $2mil in player retention + incoming freshman, dumping 60% of your remaining budget on one player when you still need 3-4 starters and a solid bench piece or two is going to lead to a disaster. I like Haralson a lot, he’s not worth more than $3mil to IU next year.

We better be willing to pay more.  If schools like St Louis are paying 10-12 we will never separate ourselves.  We’d be keeping up with the jones’.  Gotta, at some point, separate.

I’m not saying pay Haralson 4.  On its face it all sounds ridiculous.  But we will need to overspend in several spots if we are trying to rise towards the top.  If 12 is our Max, we’ll get some guys but it’ll spend quickly.

Id rather pay Bidunga top NIL money or someone like that.  I do love Haralson though.

Didn’t say not to overspend. Spending nearly half of your remaining budget on someone like Haralson however isn’t wise. Now someone like Bidunga maybe.

For 2 mil per player be prepared for more mediocrity potentially. You pay whatever market says it cost for good players and find money later.

Whether differences maker cost 3 mil, 4 mil, or even 6 mil, you have to pay what market says unless you want to miss NCAA Tourney again.

Says who? Kentucky spent $22mil and was lucky to survive the first round. IU isn’t going to have anywhere close to a $20mil payroll next year no matter how much you want to speak it into existence. IU needs to spend wisely, not blindly.

Wisely I agree. However, if you find all talent on top level costs 4 mil for anyone then you have to pay someone at that price. If you can find that talent for less great.

You can’t though be locked in on 1-2 million for someone if all that gets is role players.

If fielding a tournament level roster cost 20 mil than great. If its 10-15 mil even better.

Yep. Looks like Kansas found a way to afford Stokes haha

I think so.  Self gonna run it back with Stokes.  Peterson didn’t give that man enough stress this season.  Putting that ticker to the test coming up with endless lies on the spot. I really, really don’t like Self, if you didn’t catch my drift.

I think he’ll pull an Auburn situation and retire a week before the season so his assistant can/will get the job (Jacque Vaughn, i think is his name) but stokes may change that strat

Again, IU doesn’t have an unlimited payroll for next year. I’d love to have Bidunga. I’d love to have Haralson. I’d love to have Vaaks, etc, etc

But it’s not going to happen because IU doesn’t have $20-25 million to spend on a roster. Overpay for somebody like Bidunga, sure. But if you go that route, you have to bat close to .1000 on your secondary pieces. We still need 3-4 starters and a couple of solid bench pieces. This is where having a guy like Ryan Carr comes into play.

Fair.  But multiple schools are paying for pieces like this.  3 or 4 highly, highly ranked and expensive guys.  At some point you’d think Indiana would see that as a winning strategy and try to join the ranks of the big boys since we are right on the precipice (financially).  It’s always someone else getting the best guys.

Our 2024-25 portal "class" was considered top 2-3.
