So maybe we don’t have as much NIL as we think we do.  I don’t see how teams like Duke/Maryland can still have plenty and we don’t..

I think there’s a lot of variables , but one thing I did catch was Rabby corrected Eric saying top 15ish NIL instead of top 10 on their podcast the other day

Right, I am having a hard time making the numbers add up based on what some others are said to be paying players.  Article I read today say Cooper Flag got like 4 mil in NIL.

I mean…Duke is probably the most successful basketball program in modern times and they have a wealthy alumni base. I’d fully expect them to be top 5 if not #1 in basketball NIL spend. How many times have we went head to head with Duke for a guy and won out, historically?

It’d be weird for IU to be top 10 last year and not this year. Funds don’t seem to be an issue for the football team either.

CDD spent the money how he spent it. Gotta assume the guy has a plan.

Before last year we weren’t top 10ish in NIL from what I remember, but then Woody’s buddies ponied up more money to try to save his job. Maybe this year we reverted back to the prior years of good but not elite NIL.

The roster DD put together doesn’t scream top 10 NIL, unless he overspent on a bunch of guys. His approach would make a lot of sense if the budget wasn’t actually what it was reported to be.

A power conference starter is about a million bucks in this market. All-conference team type players for 2-4m. Devries and Wilkerson are both in the 2m+ range as I understand. That's almost half the budget, and normal for teams with the 10-12m total budgets. We probably paid 4 more guys starter money, and could be more since we were building an entire roster from scratch, sometimes paying a premium. That's another 4 million we'll say. So now, we're into 8-9 mil range already. Add in NIL for 4 more bench guys at 500k, and we are now in the 10-11 range. The math maths. Am I wrong?

Other teams are having issues, too, and some of them with us. Kentucky didn't have the money to match for Wilkerson as just one example.

We couldn’t have been too low in NIL. We never even came close to losing a player like a bunch of teams. We got the top ranked center in successive years. In 23 people here were pumped about Walker and even Sparks being a backup.

Woody stunk at building a roster, but he didn’t seem to have trouble landing the guys he wanted. With that said…last year is the first year that I really felt like the whole NIL was truly a mad scramble free agency type market. So it’s really hard to compare.

There could be a hundred reasons the team is built the way it is, but I doubt lack of funds—compared to our peers—is one of them. It was just a couple weeks ago everyone was crowing about outbidding UK and the commits were rolling in.

White smoke just came out of the Vatican chimney.

It's either a new Pope, or an NCAA ruling on Leal and Goode.

Stay tuned.

Well, d@mn, it's a new Pope.  At least he was born in Chicago.

ABC News is reporting that he is a Cubs fan.

The math doesn't math when you want to see things negatively to begin with lol

What we need is a report that IU's NIL budget was less than we realized and that this is why Leal can't get another year -- then the entire board can unite in anger.

Makes sense. Why pay end of the bench guys? In the NBA they’re league minimum types. Top 2-3 players really matter and is where the bulk of the money will settle if the pros are any indication.

I’m not being negative on this. Folks are saying we have a top 10 NIL budget, I’ve also seen top 5 thrown around. Our roster isn’t a top 10 roster on paper. Or even a top 20 roster. Doesn’t mean we can’t win a lot of games next year. Like I said earlier this week, games aren’t played on paper. Coaching matters. Hopefully we have a good one now. But our roster as it stands today is underwhelming for an alleged top 10 NIL budget. I’m far from the only one saying it.  Based on the conversion rate of the guys they got on campus, it doesn’t seem like DD was striking out on guys left and right. He seems to have largely gotten the guys he wanted. I have some questions, but I hope it works out.

Would be really hard to buy a top 10 roster on paper starting completely from scratch. Louisville, Michigan, and Kentucky certainly didn't have top 10 rosters on paper last year after their portal hauls.

The guys we got were wanted by all the other teams with the big budgets, too. We weren't competing against Ball St. for these guys. Recruiting rankings mean a whole lot less once the ball is tossed in the air, even less so after the first year.

It seems like it costs slightly more to buy a new player than retain a current one. Also, after a few years, you find some guys to keep around that work in your program and system, and can push the ones that don't out the door.

The rankings in the portal are.... ehhh.. very much.. idk the term,  but...

I think they should rank them by eligibility remaining, as one example.

Depends on who and how much you bring back. As opposed to popular belief, not every player in college basketball is looking to move schools every year and squeeze every dime out from their university. Look (unfortunately) at our rivals to the North. Braden Smith likely would have made $3-4mil on the open market this offseason and a guy like TKR would have made $2-3mil as both project to be preseason AA's next year. There isn't a chance in hell Purdue is paying those guys $6-7 million collectively. They're taking considerable pay cuts, especially Smith, to stay at a place geared up to win a national title. The more players you keep intact, the less you're likely spending on a year to year basis.

NIL is still relatively new to the college game.  IU was one of the first schools to embrace and plan for it.  Now schools are adapting to the new landscape.  Being one of the first doesn’t mean it stays that way.  Other schools have probably passed IU in terms of NIL.   Last year teams didn’t have to spend as much for players so fielding a complete roster was probably less expensive.  This year prices went up across the board.   Fielding a team this year compared to last year is probably different.   Part of the new way.    Every team will have to deal with it.  Buying players with extra years of eligibility doesn’t necessarily mean those extra years will be used at whichever school the go to.  Baylor lost their whole team to the portal and the draft and that program has won big in the last 5 years.   If it is happening to them then no team is safe.   Having said all that I like the roaster construction of the current team and look forward to seeing them play in a couple months

People are focusing too heavily on where IU stacks up in NIL (top 5 top 10 top 15 etc), but the biggest change over the last year is that teams 10-40 all have serious financial commitments now too + rev sharing and everyone will prioritize their various targets differently on their respective pay scale.
