Hate to break it to some of you, but I think CDD has more Dane Fife in him than he does Mike Woodson.

Hopefully he's the best of both worlds -- he specifically said he came to IU for the resources, so he's not averse to using the money.

Hate to break it to some of you, but I think CDD has more Dane Fife in him than he does Mike Woodson.   Woodson threw money out there and we know how that ended.  I think CDD accepts the money aspect of it, but is more interested in fit and putting together a team of players.   I don’t see him just paying guys to pay guys.  And guy emphasizing the money may be one of his red flags.  It is what it is at this point and all we can do is see how it all works out the next few weeks.  I remain cautiously optimistic

If that is true, he is already a failure and he should probably drop down to D2.  Like it or not, money is going to be THE biggest factor in recruiting in D1.  This is a job for these guys now, not wanting to emphasize money is as stupid as corporations that post they want a person with a degree and 10 years of experience and when you go to the interview they are at average or below market for a new hire.  "We are looking for people passionate about the job, asking about money is so uncouth."  Nah dude, I am here to make money while pursuing my passion.  If you want to hire big boy employees you have to pay big boy salaries.

This is professional sports.  Professionals go where the money is.  They may be willing to take a little cut to chase a championship but you can't be skimpy with the purse if you aren't at that level.  That isn't to say that all the intangibles after that don't play a role, but if we roll out the midmajor white boy "lunch bucket" team every year because we won't take on anybody with money as a motivation, we are going to remain a 20-12 bubble program.  (Thank the Lord we got Kenny Johnson on staff because there is a narrative building up here that we need to break like yesterday.)

Not sure about how many he wiffed on, but he had a losing record in year 1 at Florida. Got a bunch of zero star recruits in year 2. Then won it in year 3.

I’m not sure either. It was a genuinely curious question.

I have said from the outset that this is going to be a long rebuild. Folks didn’t like to hear that.

DDV may be an excellent coach but he is completely unproven as a recruiter. He is going to have to prove that he can win with less talented players for awhile.

My guess is that we are 3-5 years away from competing at the top half of the B1G.

No, just no.  Mike Woodson was in the Top half of the BIG.  The Top half is 9th place or better now.  You don't fire a guy for those results after 4 years and hire a guy you think will take 3 to 5 to get back there.  If you want to say 3 to 5 to regularly compete at the top 25% of the conference, I can buy that.  Top half?  No f-ing way.

I stand corrected. Competing for league titles. If he can’t finish in the top half of the B1G, then burn it down and try to win a football natty.

I can only speak for myself, but in my opinion, this has to be a hard sell to the type of players DD is looking to recruit: players who want to win. This is a total roster reconstruction. Lots of these players want to be one of the final pieces of an already successful roster.

Honestly, I'll be pretty happy with a record similar to this past season if we are seeing players who want to be here and play like they care about winning, and a coach who puts them in the best position to do that. We don't have to be elite in the next couple years, but it would be nice to see a team that makes you want to cheer for them, and is leaving it all on the court, win or lose.

Its almost never as bad as some make it out to be, and probably rarely as good as others want it to be. Enjoy the journey. Hopefully, in a couple years, we all look back at this time and laugh about how terrible we thought it was.

And if not, get some therapy ;)

Great post!

Would be great. It would do wonders for the fans like me who aren’t convinced that CDD has the juice.

DDV might think fans like you don’t have the juice. So the feelings could be mutual. I kid I kid. Happy Sunday all. Let’s get some commitments this weekend.

IU has been a middle of the pack team since your birth. Gen Z’ers like yourself who have never seen IU elite who demand blue blood results doesn’t help.

The fanbase has been the thing keeping the program alive. Instead of blaming “Gen Z’ers like myself” you should be happy there are still passionate fans in the younger generations despite IU being abysmal for the vast majority of our lives.

Coach CC sought out IU because they had the easiest schedule in the county with absolutely no expectations. CC could have won 6 games and he would have been extended. You go .500 at IU year one in basketball and you get a 2k fire thread on message boards.

Apples to Oranges

“The easiest schedule in the country” that included the two teams from the CFP final and Ohio State. If a team had Ohio State and Notre Dame on the 2025 schedule would anyone in April be calling it the “easiest schedule in the country”? Of course not. Whether he could have won 6 games and been extended is irrelevant. He won 11 games and made the college football playoff. Don’t sit here and tell us it takes 3-4 years to turn around a basketball team when we watched a turnaround with our own eyes in a much harder sport to flip by a program with none of the history or resources of IU basketball.
