Hmm.  CoachsearchSZN starting early.

It’s hard for me to believe Dusty would bail after 1 year when he’s having success even with the obvious Indiana bias and connections.

I was ready to roll with Dusty the first time, I’d be good with it again.

If Pearl was just a bit younger I’d really love that hire.  Maybe with the Cig/age/experience hire the Pearl hire is attractive to get back on track.

As someone mentioned earlier, it would be so much easier to root for this team and even Woody if he would just come out and say he is retiring at the end of the season. I know it probably will not happen, but it isn't like there is some baller class to keep together. It was one of the arguments like 1000 pages ago last season. McNeeley alone was not enough for him to be brought back IMO, and after LM left and we had a recruiting class of zero, that should have been it. We are in a precariously similar position this season. Next season will be portal heavy no matter who the coach is I don't see why they (or Woody himself) wouldn't want to bow out gracefully and maybe generate some goodwill with the fanbase. That tells me that it is no guarantee he is gone, and this is still results based.

It's hard to say for sure without knowing who Dolson is going to target after the top 3. If he doesn't need to go past those names then he won't. Based on conversations I don't think he'll make it past the top 3 unless he changes his top 3 but we won't know that for a bit.

That's fair, do we really think we can pull Stevens from his current spot in Boston though? That just seems like a tough sell considering. I know certain people have maintained contact with him so maybe his passion will pull him here, least we can do it put the offer on the table. Worst he can say is no. And I know May loves IU but how realistic is it for him to leave Michigan after only one year? Pearl is a good coach, so pardon my ignorance but are the violations committed at Tennessee not violations anymore? Or are we just willing to take that risk considering his W/L record? I know I have a lot questions, it's just the current situation makes me ask them :P

If this is Dusty's dream job, then it doesn't matter. I don't know that it is.

Also, in many ways it's easier to leave after one season than it is after multiple years of success where everything is in place organizationally for your program, you're a more prominent member of the university's community, wife is entrenched, etc.

From an IU Admin perspective - doesn't Bruce have some "baggage" that they would frown upon?

I would like to think/hope the admin is well past the luxury of obsessing over every ounce of coaching baggage, particularly knit picks from like 20 yrs ago that mean absolutely nothing. From documented egregious cheating that had zero consequences…UNC fake classes, the entire FBI bust that busted (KU, AZ, LSU, U6, on and on)…the reality has sadly been…if you ain’t cheating, u ain’t winning. We haven’t been winning, except probably confessional on Sundays. Now w/NiL and pretty much anything goes, a lot of past baggage is comical.

There’s still probably some personal  “character” baggage issues that count and perhaps rightfully so. What a damn shame…b/c that dude can coach!!

The overwhelming problem with Bruce Pearl is that he will be 65 years old by the end of this season.

Basketball coaching is very different than a head football coaching job; they are on the court with the kids much more and don't have nearly as large a staff/player complement to act as a CEO over. I cannot imagine under any circumstances us hiring a 65 year old to start a new long-term contract.

He hired an incompetent fool just because he was his friend. Which would be fine if he owned his own business and it was his own money but this was with Indiana tax payer money.

That’s some straight up soprano tactics.

If some manager at the BMV did this to the tune of 25 million they almost certainly would go to jail.

Buckner thought he was the right hire, period. You can disagree, but it wasn’t for any other reason. And it’s not Indiana tax payer money that’s been spent.

Exactly and I usually drive my wife nuts every year because I used to be so obsessed, not anymore.  I actually think there are many more like us and you we see it in the home game attendance

Sorry guys, I am still a die hard.

Well, then let’s hope QB’s done some serious soul searching and reality self-checking since then! He deserves a pass for thinking it was the right hire the first time, and all the criticism in the world for forcing another completely lost year of it last spring when it was obvious the King of Indiana wore no clothes!!

Supplemental staff (eg. Armond Hill @~$210,000) is paid for directly by the U (ie Indiana taxpayers & U tuition payers). How’s our ROI on SleepySleeperson?

He’s also high strung much like Crean and definitely has that beer and burrito body.  I love Pearl but the time has passed imo.

It was blatant nepotism and a reward for his buddy.  QB isn’t a bright man but he’s not that dumb.  And given that virtually every NBA to college hire had been a massive flop he certainly knew better.  Arguably the dumbest hire I’ve ever seen in college basketball but I expect nothing less from this administration.

Agree…not pumping Pearl as the end all be all…just pointing out baggage is nuanced, at best. I think moving on him last year would have been tremendous - not sure how much truth to rumors of his interest, and if real how true the intent actually was v using us for leverage to re-up and get all he ever wanted at Auburn. His results this year certainly look nice. To your broader point, I think most on here will readily agree…the last thing we need is another person who views the job as a pre-retirement gig!!

The most time in my opinion we should spend on Stevens is this “hey just checking in with you are you still a Masshole? “

His political views are probably a much bigger obstacle for this administration than any baggage.

I'm sorry, Bucker shouldn't get a pass for thinking it was the right hire. Woodson was in his 60s, never coached college and hadn't been a HC in nearly a decade with zero demand, even Stevie Wonder could see it was a bad hire from the jump.

The fact that we let a guy with a .159 nba winning percentage pick our coach is absurd and it was doomed to fail.
