Soon to RETIRE Coach Woodson Thread

I’m confused. And not defending Woodson.

it’s been an ongoing criticism that we aren’t keeping up with modern day ball.

Using the portal to its maximum benefit is akin to Moneyball… modern day team management.

Why would that be a bad thing if it brought the results everyone wants?

Use the portal to supplement your team and fill gaps that you missed via recruiting... it's a horrible process to use in place of recruiting... you have zero continuity year to year, and it's the ultimate solution for lazy coaches who can't be bothered to build a program...

Come on do you really think we’re going to stick with this train wreck? We’re IU.

You kind of answered your own question. :D

But seriously, I hope not... I honestly don't see how retaining Woodson is anything but a train wreck, but if Buckner et al dig their heels in, how else could it end?

That is a point that continues to be quite interesting.  Dolson hasn't acknowledged it in any way to either say it's accurate or some malarky that it was from an unauthorized source although if he says the latter, Osterman looks like a complete a$$.  At the very least, one would have expected some kind of follow-up authored by Dolson.  Also a little odd that Osterman, Rabby, etc,, haven't seem to pressure Dolson for statements they can quote.

I feel like the little girl in Miracle on 34th Street repeating "I want to believe."  "I want to believe."

Malarky? Damn, we knew you were old but we hadn’t done the math to realize you are presidential candidate old.

When I think about the amount of money that is about to be spent to hire a GM, and prop up the NIL only to prove that this Sisyphean effort is all in vain, astounds me.

Thank you.  My time spent on this forum today wasn't wasted.  I had to Google it and learned something new today.

I’m old.

If that kind of team competed for championships, would you feel the same?

In order:

1.  A team that had come through together and competed for a championship

1b. A rental team that competed for a championship

2.  Other

But not a ton of difference between 1 and 1b.  But we know that 1 isn’t happening next year and don’t feel like 1b will either

Malarky is from an ancient and now obscure Icelandic dialect meaning bullshite.

You do know that woody’s plan wasn’t to have zero recruits and go only with only transfer portal?

why should we believe he can execute an plan B when he couldn’t execute plan A?

Agree but many are discounting him wanting to go out like this. The level of will it takes to play at that level, play off back surgery etc doesn’t go away.

Do I think he thought it would be easier, yep. Now he realizes.

You can say he doesn’t deserve it, cool. But now that he has it, I think people will be surprised.

I don't give a flying fig how he goes out as long as he goes...  he was a pretty good player, played tough and overcame his injuries ... but he's a crap coach, is in way over his head and now is looking for a shortcut... he just needs to go now.

"Mike Woodson wants to know what you think you're doing"

"Mike Woodson is in my office. And why do you refer to yourself in 3rd person?"

Not sold on May though.

Me neither!  I personally don’t see what the infatuation with him.  If we are going to make a coaching change, I would like for us to go after a proven P5 coach, preferably Pearl but it wouldn’t bother if it is Calipari either.  Somebody that’s proven to win consistently that has a proven system.

Team management is just as much a part of it

Team chemistry is vastly more important... pieces that fit, players that are compatible and egos that are in check...

or, just get 8-10-15 random guys and roll the dice.

If Cal ever leaves Kentucky it will be for the NBA IMO.  Sure isn’t Indiana

I was just making a point, Cal isn’t leaving to go to IU.  I just want a proven coach with a proven system

I don't give a damn about Braydon Smith as a player, improved or not etc ... this is a thread about Firing Mike Woodson .... Besides I hate everything purdue. Some of you old timers might remember my original user name at Peegs when he first started ...

He made or suggested I change it.

You’re welcome to use it here.

Agree, in the long term that’s how to build the program back up.

it’s been acknowledged here that we aren’t anywhere close to the Duke, Kentucky, Kansa, etc of the world. I agree.

It’s been a common theme that the IU fan base is growing more and more impatient to return to relevance .That 20 plus years is not acceptable for IU. I agree.

So, how are we going to achieve this quick turnaround that everyone wants?

It’s been mentioned here that if May came and brought his FAU guys with him, that would be an immediate upgrade. Probably would, but how different would that be from getting guys from the portal? They would have no real connection to IU.

If Pearl came and brought several of his recruits with him, would they be IU guys or Pearl guy?

As I said, I want to see IU back to prominence just like you do. Soon as possible. I am not talking about the weakness of Woodson’s recruiting system. I’m talking about what it’s going to take to get the program back to being competitive as soon as possible and getting the fans back and connected to the program

Sure, but Smith went from good to really good. We’d be expecting Cupps to go from unplayable to good. Anything is possible, but right now Cupps isn’t a big ten caliber player. You can chalk it up to Smith playing with “much better talent, but you don’t play 30 mpg on a 29-6 team if you aren’t a good player.

And remember, Smith played with a fellow Freshman in the backcourt. The emphasis on Purdue's "talent" is overrated. He ran point on a B1G champion in an all-Frosh backcourt.

Smith was good last year, and it wasn't just based on Purdue's talent. And Cupps is running a team with 3 Five-Star players. I think IU has plenty of talent. Now coaching? That's another story.
