Fire Coach Woodson Thread

You might be too mellow if you think that was a good team. I haven't seen them much but nothing about them yesterday showed me anything other than average.

You might be a little too bitter about a terrible coach that is currently coaching IU if you can’t view a conference road win against a team that was currently projected as a tourney team something IU isn’t as anything but a positive.   Yep Woody sucks however road wins in conference over teams currently ahead of you on the seed line are always a good thing.  The win probably moved IU up to the first 4 out range.   Does it suck that’s where IU is at as a program?  Yep but that’s where it’s at

An average team played better than average to beat another average team. We were 7.5 underdogs which is very sad that were ever an underdog in basketball to PSU

I think we're so used to getting spanked on the road to average teams that yesterday was a refresher. Lets see if we can win at Iowa - another very average team.

I don't think that negates his point though.  He didn't say whether the win was a positive or a negative, he just said it was two average teams playing each other and one of the average teams played better and won.  That is pretty much what happened.

Sunshine and unicorns view, "Yay, we beat a higher NET rated team on the road!"

Pessimist: "With the talent we have we should win that game and it shouldn't have been the struggle it was after we opened a 16 point lead, but here won."

Ultra-pessimist view: "We sadly have to rely on injuries to force the coach to play how we should have been playing all along and if not for an injury to a post player, we are likely looking at getting shredded with the pick and rolls and basket drives than we were and we likely would not have had the offensive spacing that helped our offense.  Woody got forced into being a better coach by fate.  It is JHS at the point because XJ went down type of 'brilliance' that potentially saves a season but has zero to do with any adjustments Woodson made."

Yes you said it better than me. Yay we beat PSU at their second home which we haven't beaten them on the road much lately or any team on the road but it still was two average teams IMO.

What sucks is with this team if we had a competent coach we could be so much fun to watch. Hopefully soon though

We are playing all the average to below average teams first. Usc is below average. To see if the preseason ranking is really legit and the six million was money well spent we won't know til we play illinois, michigan, michigan state, purdue, and UCLA.

The thing for me in that Penn state game was that it WAS fun to watch. The game is so much better to watch without 2 back to the basket bigs clogging the lane and just waiting for the post feed.

We still fed Ballo in the post PLENTY, especially when they had their backup big in, but the offense was more free flowing and we actually had personnel on the floor that could defend the perimeter.

Yes was fun for the most part. The offense was so much better with one big. But we have been saying this for at least 3 years. But also knew watching with Woodson coaching that a 16 point lead wasn't enough. Sub patterns and those things are never going to leave.

Nothing I say here is in defense of Woodson :)

Im beyond done with the guy. A real coach, like the guy up in West Lafayette, would stagger his bigs explicitly if he was in a situation like this. See: Edey/Trevion Williams.

The people around me thought we were for sure going to blow the lead toward the end, especially when they cut it to 3 at one point briefly. I look forward to the day it's fun to watch IUBB, not because we're competitive with PSU, but because we're blowing out subpar opponents and competing with the best of the best. In the meanwhile, we can pat ourselves on the back for this one...

I predict after beating USC on Wednesday to get to 4-1 in the B1G, the burners will get cocky and those in this thread will freak out about him coming back next season.

Looking at the schedule though, it's not a stretch to see 4-1 becoming 5-10 or 6-9.

The schedule does get pretty daunting starting this weekend.

I haven't rewatched the PSU game yet and probably missed a lot in person.

That said I was thinking about the rest of the season last night. Before we saw this energy and effort, I felt strongly that 7 wins was the ceiling. Now that it's clear the team hasn't mailed it in yet, I could see a world where we do go 10-10 or maybe even 12-8 and into the tournament. Definitely still a good chance things go completely off the rails too. All things considered, I'd rather win as much as possible and trust that Dolson will be able to make the right move when the time comes... but totally get why some feel differently.

I'm not so much impressed with our play as much as our intensity. That gives you a shot in every game. It's not necessarily enough to overcome other teams with equal talent and better coaching, but it's a hell of a lot less painful to watch a game. Hope it continues.

Come the end of March/early April it will be interesting to see who eats the crow.  Those that are positive he'll be back for 25-26 and those of us that are equally positive he's gone regardless.  Less than 90 days we'll know the winner or the loser depending how you  look at it.

  Bon appetit.

They are already super cocky. But this is the easiest part of the schedule by far and they were picked to finish 2nd, so beating 4 teams that are all probably going to finish in the bottom half of the conference isn't really some overachievement. But I do think the chances of him being back are high.

And everyone knows the first losing streak by the new coach some of the fan base will turn on him as well

Should everyone wait for the voice of reason (ScottyR), to decide when they want to turn?  Should everyone be like you?

I think we are all expecting the cockroaches to come out of the cracks.  Also, once Malik Reneau comes back to clog things up because MW loves his 2 big lineup, it will change the way we play and the dynamic of the team.  I like Ballo playing 30+ minutes, he’s a beast but his minutes will go down once Malik returns.  I wish he would bring Malik off the bench, it will save him from fouling so much and the team will be more effective with a scorer coming off the bench but we all know that won’t happen

If I'm wrong please don't put a lot of salt on my crow, I'm trying to do better in 2025. Either way some will be happy and some will be upset.

When was the last time a high-major coach kept coaching in the last 2 years of his contract? I don't recall any but I don't follow other schools' coaching situations that closely. I highly doubt it's very often as they'll get extended before that.

So those that think he'll be back should ask themselves whether he's done enough to get an extension.

I'd think that barely getting into the tournament when the preseason expectations were competing for a B1G title and S16+ wouldn't warrant one. Or will IU be one of the few schools that lets its coach get close to the end of his contract, knowing that it hurts recruiting - it would hurt portal recruiting as well as HS.
