Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Not really. He was welcomed back warmly.

He was treated like any other failure coach prone to a series of foot-shooting gaffes. The one difference being back then certain standards still seem to exist among most of the fan base and we felt entitled to return to greatness sooner rather than later.

Anyone in his position reading letters from pissed off fans is just wallowing in their own pity, looking for sympathy. Any respectable coach would just have their secretary dump them in the garbage.  His agent and supporters were all too happy to plead to the press to try and curry sympathy and deflect from Davis’s own missteps.

He was in way over his head and I have some appreciation for that fact which is why he wasn’t able to successfully navigate fairly easy and common obstacles. But as the wise poet Coughlin once said, “all things end badly, or else they wouldn’t end.”

He brought a lot of it on himself. From publicly complaining about his salary to openly talking about his desire to coach in the NBA some day, he never came off as someone the fans should rally behind.

I think a lot of the mythologies about how IU is a bad job because the fans aren't good to the coaches started with his whining about how he was treated here.

Teams will start adjusting to iu with only one big now if he isn't coming back soon. They will certainly scout out running the one in. The better teams will defend iu well on the perimeter.

Wouldn't that leave one on one matchups in the post? Not many bigs are stopping Ballo on the block.(or Malik for that matter).

My point is the better teams will adjust. Wisconsin took down the mighty Rutgers at Rutgers tonight by 12 and limited baily to 9 points. Teams like wisconson will be a whole different level.

Really? We had a much more easily secured win against Rutger. The final margin was about the same but our lead hovered between 10 and 15 for almost all of the 2nd half; Wisconsin was up 3 with 6:45 left in the game before they pulled away.

He had it pretty brutal on the message boards. Way worse than any coach since from what I remember. There were people who wanted him gone right after making the title game. Standards were still pretty high back then and following knight was no win situation.

Woody had Walsh fill in for him lol.

Too funny… you just have to laugh.

At the PSU game, it was about 10 mins to tip off and the guy next to me goes “Where is Woodson? Have you guys seen Mike Woodson? Anybody know where Bigfoot is?” and nobody had… There were about 2 minutes where everyone in our section thought he may have not shown up to Philly and we all just missed the news. Then he came out and people were relieved… sorta. Lol

He did have it hard but he also brought some of it on himself. As others noted he was out of his comfort zone being the head coach of a school like Indiana. He was whiny him screwing up the oden/conley recruitment was one of many blunders that drove a lot of the fan criticism

Well with all the snow he might slip and break a hip.....

Fair point.  But they said it was moved to zoom/dial-in before Mike no-showed, so it wasn't even that.  Just some classic Woody at the end of the day.

But we were at home and Harper didn’t play, so bit easier path for us.

We were at home.

Harper tried to play against Wisconsin; he was 0-2 from the floor for zero points in 15 minutes and then shut it down for the night.

Harper “trying” to play probably doomed Rutgers. Harper looked awful and disinterested and probably shouldn’t have played.

But why ruin a good narrative?
