Well, my understanding was that we agreed to terms, wrote them up, she took the agreement on a plane from Florida to Boston made a few calls on the plane. Brad got outvoted by his family about leaving Boston but a short time later after the NBA season ended, Ainge retired and Brad became general manager.

There were way too many people at the house when all of this was being discussed in Florida.

Bingo

We had a lot of old rich men in the room and most were intimidated by a smart young woman. So they say she is challenging

Ha, I’m not surprised to hear that.

That sort of meeting just needs two, three at most people from IU.  But of course we took our giant group of “stakeholders” there and botched it.  Classic.

FWIW I do know that Brad had a somewhat recent (last few months) conversation with a Celtics player in which he talked about wanting to coach at IU at some point

I know we keep in touch with him.

I doubt he ever comes here.  And I don’t blame him, our bball program is a mess.

I want to believe you, but know IU basketball can't have nice things.

Part of the issue with our bad hires is that the administration won’t hire anyone with an ounce of baggage.  They also won’t ever hire anyone that could ever become bigger than the program ever again.  Stevens and May are really the only 2 that would satisfy both the fans and the administration.

The fans want Beard or Pearl of the realistic candidates right now.  I doubt either would ever get hired and if it’s someone else not named Stevens or May half the fan base will be rooting for them to fail from the hire and the will.  That’s why while I want Woodson fired as much as anyone I have zero faith that the next hire will be much better.  They won’t hire a killer.  They’ll hire another yes man and the fans will have the torches and pitch forks out before he has even coached a game.

Our luck, it'll be when he's 65 and coaches for 2 yrs just to be able to say he coached IU and accomplish checking off that final box.

To me taking advantage of the University, Nepotism, standing up a recruit on a visit, etc is a lot of baggage.  Yes it happened after he was hired but it’s also grounds to fire him and that doesn’t count his poor coaching.

This will sound like blasphemy, but BS hasn’t coached college basketball since 2013, and he hasn’t coached basketball at all since 2021. Are we sure he’d be a grand slam at this point? Would he really want the daily grind?

Yeah, I don't think that's how most (competently run) universities would handle a negotiation of that sort.

I think it was one of Dan Wetzels books that had a chapter on how Alabama landed Saban. Basically the exact opposite of IU sending out the doofus brigade.
