Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Another couple of bad losses (on the way shortly) and I would think Woody would consider a face saving, legacy saving, way out!

Hopefully... but I'm not convinced that that is a possibility yet...

Haven't our donors already shelled out $10M to make Archie go away and another $15 to bid fare-thee-well to Allen?

Can't keep relying on them to bail out our athletic administrators and BOT for making stupid decisions.

This well has to dry up soon, if it hasn’t already…. No?

That is true, but I think they can intervene since they have skin in the game!

A guy that smokes cigars has a cigar? That is most certainly NOT the problem.

Disconnected play, unmotivated players, bad roster construction, and players thinking instead of intuitively knowing what to do are the problems.

Woody’s friend posting a picture of a cigar smoker having a cigar is tone deaf and minor-grief inducing, but truly a nothing-burger.

I disagree.

Maybe I hold people to unrealistic standards, especially those that are getting paid millions to coach basketball, but in my opinion, doing this (whether it's standard practice for him or not) sends the wrong message to every single person in that building. It says losing is business as usual, nothing wrong here. Losing will not have any consequences and when that's the case, what (or who) is going to motivate anyone to work harder and fix this? Bc it wont fix itself.

I'm all for having a cigar or a nice glass of red but maybe not in my office directly after NW just beat me on my home floor. Go back to work, Woody.

I'm 70 years old and been following Indiana basketball and football all of my life. I am not sure that "stop caring" is even possible... but Woodson is sure giving it a go for me.

I’m right behind both in age and how I am starting to feel.  I haven’t missed watching a game since I was doing my undergraduate degree, yes that includes watching them out in Maui, and it has been a tough watch the last 25 years, with the exception of the 2002 championship game team.

I don't see this program being respectable for at least 3-4 years. Since our admin is clueless, I'm going to assume Woody is here for at least 2 more years. Even if we lose out, I just don't have the confidence they'll fire him.

If he's actually sitting around, lounging, smoking cigars and drinking wine after losing to NW at home, that's a semi-retired man. He doesn't care. He's basking in a nice salary and friends that will protect him. We're screwed.

I'd agree with you if NIL and immediate transfers didn't exist. You get the right guy in here, and he can make a very quick impact through the portal and with the support of NIL. If you're questioning that, look at what Cignetti did to the IUFB roster in just 2 months. It's insane. A few years ago, it would have never been possible.

I agree with that entirely. I just don't have the confidence Woody is going anywhere anytime soon.

It’s indicative of a guy who doesn’t care all that much about winning or losing. Same way an NBA player gets blasted when he’s seen partying at the club after an embarrassing loss.

Disconnected play, unmotivated players, and bad roster construction are all things you’d expect from a team when you find out the head coach is knee deep in cigars and wine moments after another embarrassing home loss to a mediocre team. He behaves like a semi-retired man.

Why would he care? He's still getting paid, win or lose... and he has protection so he's not getting run out of town... so no sweat... I don't have the political clout of a Buckner, nor do I have the financial influence of people like the Cooks... so Woodson is the teflon don of Indiana basketball...

While it may send the wrong message to some people (including me), it doesn't matter a bit in the grand scheme... nothing will change in the foreseeable future.

I would think that Woodson would be embarrassed about the product that he is delivering, but, at least he's flush with cash and has friends who guard his back...

Coach Mike Woodson and Calbert Cheaney and the rest of the IU coaching staff led by Woodson may think they are doing a very good job working with young players.  They just have a couple bad breaks here and there.  They may feel just a couple more made shots, a made free throw, a rebound, one less turnover, and IU men’s basketball will turn around and we will do it.  Let’s go smoke a cigar and have a Schlitz malt liquor.

I was looking at his numbers, in particular fouls. Starting at the game at Illinois, he has gotten 4 or 5 fouls in every game except against Iowa where he played only 3 minutes. In the other 5 games in that time, he's fouled out in 4 of them. His assist numbers in that time are also a big drop off from what he was for most of the season up until that point. His scoring and rebounding have also been inconsistent in that time frame, scoring especially. So right now, all you really know you're going to get from him are lots of fouls and not very many passes to players ready to catch and shoot.

Thank you for proving my point!  To me, he looks to score first and he should look to pass first!  You’ve got to get the ball moving to get the opposing teams D moving.  Instead he’s looking for ways to make a move around his man and most of the time he’s trying to split 2 or even 3 defenders and it drives me nuts.  Be a good teammate and a black hole and this team will play better

100% agree!  I definitely can and probably did send the wrong message

And I'd bet he went right to watching the NBA All Star game festivities.

His mind is still in the NBA. Outside of IU I would seriously doubt he watches much college basketball at all.

After a win, it wouldn't bother me if he chose to relax for the evening. But we didn't win, so maybe try to figure out why Northwestern keeps kicking your a$$.

Yeah I completely disagree.

You fix all those problems by locking in and not resting until you have a solution.  Woodson is still a very unproven college coach, and kicking his feet up after yet another home loss to NW (if true he was knee deep in wine and cigars) doesn't send a very good message to the fans, but far importantly, his own team.

It says to me he has neither the energy nor the desire to fix anything, and at worst he doesn't possess the wherewithal to identify that a problem even exists.

Pride.

I hear you, but not sure that matters when he is flush with cash and has friends protecting him... And I could argue that IF it was a matter of pride, that would change (or should have changed) a lot that has gone on so far...
