I'm getting a little worried that every transfer/recruit we're getting is a JMU player/offer. I'm fine with some of the roster being made up with this caliber player but we're going to need some B1G level players as well. I just don't see a SBC roster competing in the B1G.

It's called the low hanging fruit.  Locking up the players you already know, who you think can compete in the Big10 is the first step.  Takes time to review and evaluate the 100s of players you'll need to go thru.

We've gotten 2 recruits and a Wake Forest transfer, calm down some. James Madison would have whipped our behinds last year and a lot of those kids were initially recruited as FCS players.
Not 100% convinced they would have whipped our behinds. They beat 3-9 Virginia by one point and honestly probably should've lost that game. Allen would've fumbled it away, no doubt, but to act like they were superior to IU in talent is absolutely not the case.

I’m a little concerned too when you add in the fact that most of our staff is going to be made up of JMU guys too. Like, look, I understand the benefits of continuity and working with guys you’ve worked with in the past. But the Big 10 is multiple steps up from the Sun Belt and we were the worst team in the conference last year, so we need some big improvements.

I definitely don’t think there are many JMU guys who are Big Ten caliber (and we’ve only added two, so it’s not like the staff seems to think so anyway).

That being said, I’m not sure what JMU has to do with the coaching staff. Football X’s and O’s are the same regardless of conference.

Probably a little late into this recruiting cycle to go out and get many players he has no connection to.

Exactly. I am not sure what people's expectations are in regards to HS recruits for 2024. He's literally been the coach at IUFB for two weeks. I assume he knows the guys he's bringing from JMU are capable of playing at IU. One thing CCC doesn't seem to be is naive. Regardless, the main influx of new players for next year is probably coming from the portal. But just because he's bringing in some JMU players and recruits to help fill in holes doesn't mean he's only going to be recruiting SBC level talent in the future. Realistically he and his staff can only bring in players they have any sort of relationship with now.

I won't disagree with that but there are portal opportunities and more NIL$ to play with.

I guess my expectation is to have heard of some higher caliber players we are showing interest in from the portal. Haven't really seen that yet. To be clear I think we got a good coach and believe we will be improved. At the same time, as of now, I have a little concern with the level of talent we are trying to get. Both things can be true. There is plenty of time to get better players and I'm not arguing that either.

There's still a lot of stuff going on. I think we'll start to see more commits and withdraws and probably more guys leaving. So the next few weeks will be interesting. My expectations are pretty low for next season to be honest. I love CCC's moxie, but he's basically cleaning house. So the low hanging fruit are the JMU  players/recruits he thinks are Big Ten capable. But I finally believe we have a guy who really knows what he's doing organizationally. Not only has been the head guy at a couple of schools, he's also been the "new coach" in town. So I am optimistic he knows what has to take place the first days, weeks, and months taking over and the decisions that have to be made both easy (bringing coaches/players/recruits you trust or have a prior relationship with) and hard (letting coaches/players/recruits go that don't fit the shorter and longer term goals) and every thing in between. But this stuff is all very fluid. But it's nice to trust or at least believe that they have a guy who seems to know what he's doing.

I get it, and hope over time we see some better recruits commit. Some of those JMU recruits did have other FBS offers; Landino had offers from Rutgers, Temple, UMASS, and UCONN.

Not that other staffs wouldn't be able to do this.. but one trip to Bloomington and the coaches had 3 of their favorites convinced to continue trusting them and go to IU.

I have no idea what that means long-term but... I'm sure those kid felt honored to be made a priority. "First recruiting visit to IU".. type thing.

Pat Kuntz played at Roncalli during their heyday, played at ND, and GA'ed here... if he says Landino is a guy... I'll roll with it. Cignetti has coached numerous QB to awards.. he says Mendoza is good enough, a guy we should like.. I'm inclined to believe him.

Not a a ringing endorsement from Tyler Cherry about the old coaching staff.

It was definitely a different feel being down at IU this time,” Cherry said. “Their coaching staff made us feel right at home and put on a great presentation for us. Got to meet with Coach Cignetti, Coach Tino and Coach Shanahan and talk to those guys and talk football and it was a different feel down in Bloomington than before.”

Landing him would be a nice start.

Ship may have sailed with Mendoza coming on board, unfortunately.  If nothing else, the optics and word of mouth should help with future in-state recruiting efforts.

Glad to see Cignetti aggressively going after his former JMU recruits.  I remember when Archie Miller discouraged McKinley Wright from coming to IU.

Seems like some JMU fans are not appreciative of this and that Cigs didn't publicly thank the school etc. To the point that some are actually making negative comments to recruits on social media.

What fans wouldn’t be upset? I would too, but that’s the nature of the business.  All those recruits committed to play for Coach Cignetti and his staff, JMU happened to be where they would go to school and play. I realize some universities help make player’s decisions because of what the school offers educationally. Speaking for Coach Cignetti, I wouldn’t change a thing! You lose an extremely popular coach and several highly anticipated recruits on top of that. Coach wants what he knows and what he thinks will help playing in the BIGTEN.
