Is this normal for University Presidents to have this much say? Genuinely curious if this is standard or IU has some disfunction where Scott Dolsen can't get his guy

Normal for someone like Fitzgerald or Gruden but probably not for any other candidates.

I’m very curious how much IU is willing to spend on the next coach as that will be part of why first list candidates may turn down IU

They have been using this search firm for a couple of weeks so it doesn't mean anyone turned us down

I assume they are used to do the leg work on contacting through back channels to see who would be interested. I am pretty sure the AD gives them some names to do background checks and gage interest.  Some act like these forms yells the AD who to look at.

Probably due, at least in part, to the baggage that Gruden and Fitzgerald bring... but I also question Dolson's ability to get much done (apart from crapping his pants).

its the equivalent of the owner of an MLB team signing off on a mega contract....

doubt that is the case... because if true, the obvious question is "where was the university President when Allen got his guarantee on the $20+M buyout approved?"

That’s what it is. Also there’s always more than just the AD that have to sign off on any hire before it’s official. This happens at all levels of athletics.

I mean,  its all hindsight now, but at the time he earned that extension...

Can you imagine Allen getting poached by a UCLA/USC type school after the seasons he had up to that extension?

The # of pitchforks that would be outside the AD's office if he left because IU could not get an extension done would rival the population of a small city

Is Dolsen a good, great, or bad AD? Anyone have insider knowledge know or care to provide context? Want to set my expectations for this hire to this answer

Yeah, Allen probably did earn the extension... and contractually, IU was required to do the extension... but to my knowledge, there was nothing contractual about guaranteeing a $20+M buyout... THAT'S where Dolson screwed the pooch, and it's the part that sticks in my craw.

Donors will buy out a head coach but not contribute to an NIL fund.

Go Hoosiers!

I would argue that more would contribute to an NIL fund if they weren't busy putting together $20M to get rid of the last coach.

I find it incredibly difficult to believe that a donor would be willing to spend large sums of money to make someone go away, but that same donor would not consider contributing to an NIL fund or a capital improvement effort to improve facilities - both are for the benefit of the players and the overall betterment of IU football.
