It's CMW's team to coach until it's not. XJ or no XJ, he will put on the floor the guys he thinks give us the best chance to win. He sees them in practice and the staff has input as well. As far as the zone goes, I wasn't that impressed with it. Nobody looked like they were comfortable or knew where they were supposed to be. If the opponent can't shoot threes, then maybe. Otherwise, our zone three point defense is worse than our m2m.

Personally, I'm not sure how the impression of IU playing zone could have been negative in the Louisville game.  The team that looked uncomfortable during that stretch certainly wasn't IU.  I believe it was Louisville 60-55 when IU went to the zone with about 8 minutes left.  In the last 8 minutes Louisville only scored 6 points and only managed to get 8 shots up and make two.....one of which was a layup with 4 seconds left.  While I know Louisville isn't very good, giving up 6 points in an 8 minute span is pretty darn good against anyone.

Would it work against good shooting three point teams?  Unless IU improves, I don't think it would be any worse than we've seen from the switching defense we play where the switches aren't clean and we are giving up open looks in man.

If X is out, I have no idea who guards Jahmir Young.  I'm hoping we see some of the zone that we threw against Louisville considering Maryland's shooting woes so far.

I have to think it’s best they just keep X out and get him another full week of recovery. If he plays and his ankle/foot isn’t 100%, he’ll be no good guarding Young anyway and have a high risk of making the injury worse.

Maryland’s 3pt shooting is bad. Also a 2-3 would keep Ware at the rim to alter shots. If they simply had the other 4 challenge guys at the 3 point line, I think it could work.

With that said, I agree with you regarding our overall zone. A good passing team would get our guys out of position pretty easily if they weren’t any better than against lville. I just don’t think Maryland is that team, especially if we just played it situationally.

Either way, it’s academic. I seriously doubt Woody puts zone in his gameplan.

They've stunk this year from 3 but went 8-20 in their last game so maybe finding their stroke. They should be a good shooting team but just haven't been so far.

We all know they will find their stroke in assembly. Seems everyone but us has last several years! We better be ready!

FWIW, their identity hasn't been to be a team that uses the three point shot all that much or effectively and that goes beyond this year.  They've made 33% of their threes in each of the last two seasons and average taking about 21 per game.  No real knock down volume three point shooters.  Donta Scott could be a matchup issue, though, as Reneau will likely draw that assignment and Scott can shoot a little.  Young, Reese, and Scott.  Reese and Scott v Ware and Reneau is pretty even....I'd be inclined to give IU the edge but Reneau gets in foul trouble pretty easily.  Young could be an issue for IU.  Would be a really good night for Mgbako to go off because if Geronimo is guarding him, we know how poor a perimeter defender JG is.

Kaiser was expected to be a shooter who hasn't been. Or at least I thought he was suppose to be. Not sure about DSH but he definitely hasn't been a good one.

Maybe it was because Rider did not put up any defense at the 3 line.   Maryland had such a big day.   Maryland cruised past Rider 103-76 on Tuesday evening at the XFINITY Center. Maryland, who controlled the boards and the paint all night, attempted 45 free throws total.  Maryland did anything they wanted.  Even Geronimo has a great first half.  Only 4 players scored for Maryland.  Nothing in that game is a good predictor of what happens in other games...unless one plays Rider at home.

It won't be that way in Assembly Hall against the Hoosiers.

Game Day at Indiana!

I would say maybe throw Mgbako on Scott and Malik on JG but that would hinge on Mgbako not getting lost. He's improving but don't know if he's ready for that yet.

DSH is an athlete but wasn't thought of as a good shooter in HS. I also remember IU recruiting Kaiser as a shooter.

Well... Maryland isn't shooting the 3 very well. So they'll probably hit like 14 tonight as they get to take a bunch of wide open practice shots all night.

If you are to spot the rando hitting threes......freshman DeShawn Harris-Smith is 1 of 19 from three this year.

I laughed -- but it was because this is probably true, lol.

Oh yeah, Trilly’s now guaranteed that happens.
