JG is in his junior year. Should he still be making freshman mistakes? We're missing something in our program. Not sure where you specifically stood on it, but I was in debates with people on this board last summer that were saying Galloway shouldn't even be in the rotation this season, yet now we're going to expect there to not be a big drop-off from XJ/JHS to him? I've never been high on JG as anything more then a energy backup 4 in 10-15 minutes, so no I don't expect him to replace Race Thompson without a dropff, though admittedly I also didn't expect the train wreck like performance he put in Thursday. I do agree with you though, that it does seem odd that so many young players that aren't super highly ranked seem to come into some other programs and contribute right away, and it seems like at IU unless you're a McDonald's AA, we don't get much from you, especially early. For whatever reason, we just have not recruited "dawgs" for years. We haven't recruited super confident guys with just massive swagger, etc. I dont know why that is. There is something there and it's spanned multiple coaches, so I do hear what you're saying about something at the program level. With all of that said, very few teams if any are going to survive the injuries we've had to the players we've had them too. You can't just dismiss that. But again, I do hear what you're saying and don't totally disagree. hoosierfan6157, Hovadipo and HoosierAloha 3 Quote
Alford Bailey Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 I doubt Woody automatically gives JG Races minutes as bad as he’s played. Could even see us go small Quote
Josh Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 When we hired an NBA coach, I openly questioned on here about how he would coach against a zone since he didn't see one in the League I'm not posting this as a "Told You So", it's more so that you'll understand how smart my big brain works. Josh Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Has there been any response by the Big Ten to Woody's comments on the officiating? Or are they letting it slide because they know he's tight? Quote

Counter: the 2 instances I remember of us playing against a zone (2021 Syracuse and Thursday) we hung 88 (in regulation, 110 total) and 89 respectively, but apparently decided to not play a lick of defense in either of them, resulting in giving up 112 and 91. I’m sure there are more than 2 games we’ve seen a zone with Woody, but those 2 stick out. Fran Jr. can talk smack all he wants about how we looked like we had never seen a zone before, but we scored at will on them, so? go iu bb, BGleas and moyemayhem 1 2 Quote

If McCaffery's son hadn't tried to flex after the game we probably aren't even talking about zone offense. BGleas, Josh, Hovadipo and 1 other 3 1 Quote

I dont know, I haven't the advanced metrics or anything, but do know we scored 89 points and from what I've read we scored something like 61 points after they went to the zone. go iu bb and IU Scott 2 Quote

That being said, Woodson hasn’t been a head coach since 2013. There’s a big difference between ASST NBA Coach and College head coach. Quote

During his time as the Knicks’ head coach the zone was actually used more frequently than the years after (before its resurgence in the past couple seasons). It increased in popularity after the Mavs used it successfully in the 2011 Finals. Quote

But again, I do hear what you're saying and don't totally disagree. My overall stance on players - a complete player is a combination of attitude, athleticism, and abilities (basketball skills). Galloway has enough of those to impact this team. Teams are constructed with compatibility in mind. If you have a team full of softies without leaders you'll struggle. Of course there will be a drop off but it seems we fell off a cliff. Galloway and Bates should have been pushing both XJ and JHS. I'm a bit scared what Gunn and Banks will look like next season if what we've seen from others is what should be expected. Where is the development in this program? We were incredibly "deep" to start the season and then had no answer for when JHS was out against Rutger (that loss was much more on attitude and less about defense). The development has been horrendous and in some instances players have gotten worse. Watching this Xavier vs. Villanova game, Sean Miller stopped Jerome Hunter from wasting possessions pretty quickly. He's now contributing much more to their ability to win. When was the last time we saw this? Amen to the text in bold. We have some really likeable young men in this program. That's great but that's not going to get us where we want to be. Although it's probably where the administration is happy with it. Quote
