Matthew Mayer scares me. He gives me Brady Manek vibes. UNC fans wanted him real bad for the same reason

Manek is way better IMO.

Mayer is a big that won't play inside and shoots a low percentage from three. In his career at Baylor he averages 0.4 blocks per game at 6'9". that is not good.  UNC fans may have wanted him because he fits their perception of pale-faced stretch four to replace Manek, but UNC coaches didn't want him -- they want Pete Nance. Nance is a better rebounder and a better shooter than Mayer.

Torvik was pretty accurate last year. He had Purdue going 14-6 at a time when some of our fans were afraid they might go undefeated.

Honestly, if Skyy Clark were ours instead of IL, I'd expect we'd be predicting/expecting great things from him.

For sure. I think a lot of the Illinois skepticism just stems from adding so many new pieces.  It’s a risky game to see if pieces from different systems can fit together. 
 

We have viable line ups without any newcomers.  That’s so reassuring a coach.  The only new comer that we really even need to play a bench role is JHS as back up PG. 

Generally when you only NEED freshmen 5 stars to play 6-8 minutes a game that’s a good sign. Granted that’s a team that is probably middle of the pack big ten. 
 

We have a much higher floor than Illinois I think.  And a slightly higher ceiling. 
 

Our real difference Maker is Bates. If he can be the player we all hoped he can be. Able to drive or shoot from perimeter. Fingers crossed

If we had Clark, we'd be expecting great things from him ... as X's backup. We'd also be hoping he got healthy enough to battle Bates and Galloway for the starting SG slot.

Illinois needs him to be their 30 minute per game point guard.

Agree but think it's Bates and JG. JG has that monster potential, while Bates is primed to explode offensively

True.  If one of them can play wing and be able to drive and shoot from distance we will be a really good team. If both can we can be a great team

Such an excellent post Brass. Let me add some context about our floor:

A starting lineup of:

• Trayce,
• Race,
• Kopp,
• Gallo, and
• X

is more a less a 21-23 win, just above .500 B1G team next year. That's our floor starting entirely last year's players with no additional new talent or contributions. It implies last year's Bates and Geronimo and no Durr, Phin or Stewart.

Now, add improved talent and contributions above and beyond that lineup from any one or more of:

• Jordan G.,
• JHS,
• Bates,
• Reneau, or
• Banks.

What do you think the odds are that one or more of those five players significantly impacts our success? If you ask me, it's overwhelmingly likely.
