Was thinking about who are the third and fourth best overall players on this team. Probably even with all of his flaws X is clearly our third best overall player. Which means that none of our three best overall players have the ability to hit an outside shot with any minimum consistency. 

Our fourth best overall player? Yikes, that's really a tough one. Now think around the B1G to other teams third and fourth best overall players. Forget the Purdue, OSU, Illinois comparisons -- those are top 20 teams nationally.

We compare favorably against Minny and Nebraska for sure, but after that even PSU, Maryland, and NW arguably have better "third and fourth best overall players." The third and fourth best overall options on the lower half of the B1G:

• PSU: After Harrar and Pickett they still have Lundy and Sessoms
• Maryland: After Fatts and Ayala there's still Donta Scott and Hakeem Hart
• NW: After Buie and Nance there's still Audidge and Ryan Young

None of those teams have a player nearly as good as Trayce; arguably none of those teams have any players as effective as Race,  but I'd take any of those six I listed over a whole bunch of our role players.

 

I would take Gallo over any of those six.

Anyway it is really simple, as a whole, these players are not physically gifted as good shooters. This could simply be the end thread sentence.  For everything he does to lift his lesser teammates, even TJD's FT shooting is a constant let down.

 

And every position, not TJD, is playing one level above what they should be at IU or any other elite or more factually a once elite program.  X,PS, Kopp are not starting guards/wings at a top 20 program. TG,KL,JG should be no more than spot minute guys. RT is about what he should be a great compliment to a stud player.

Anyway, I will hold off judgement on CMW until he gets some players here that fit his vision. He has this team playing defense at a level not seen in years at IU, and I hope once he gets a crop of shooters at IU that things will quickly return to the what, the  unrealistic at the moment, expectations of the fanbase. Now if, in a year or 2 the offense is the same rudderless ship, the sky is falling rhetoric may be more justified.

Another annual IU tradition around this time, wait until we get shooters! Fast forward to the off-season, we landed player y (couldn't use X that wouldn't be accurate) and he's a shooter. Player a, b, and c will increase their percentage and be shooters next season. We'll get there in time, it might be wise to use the pieces you have.

I have little doubt Woody has plenty of time under Scott. We need many things in this program. Great guard and wing play will help but if there isn't a post to balance pressure I'm not sure how much we can expect freshmen guards and wings to improve over what we've seen. Will they be utilized correctly in that new, modern offense? Will they be able to defend? Lots of fun questions I'm sure we'll answer with hype and talk.

Keep Trey, Anthony, Jordan and Tamar. Keep incoming recruits and fill out roster with transfers that have contributed to a winning culture. To the rest of the guys thanks for the effort and deciding to come to IU but it's time for a reset in the psyche of this basketball program. Take lumps next year and be ready to seriously contend the following year. I could live with a subpar season if there were clear signs of what we were trying to do and we could see team and individual improvement.

Woody has plenty of time as coach. But the foundation for years 3 and 4 are being laid now. 
 

And he’s got the same issues as Archie.  AAU coaches, high school coaches and parents are going to look at this offense and want no part of it.  Which will affect recruiting talent.  And our player development looks non existent so we aren’t likely to get much help from within the lockerroom and with the new transfer rules it’s easier than ever for kids to leave a team that has no future. 
 

Losing begets losing in college sports.  It starts a death spiral. 20 years ago a coach could maybe have a few down years at their start and turn it around. But it’s different now.

That’s the problem.  Parker doesn’t move at all.  Gallo moves but he isn’t there yet as a shooter.  Bates moves but he couldn’t get anything to go down.  Leal moves but for whatever reason isn’t playing.  We are playing Stew and Kopp like they were promised minutes.  Stew acts like he doesn’t even like playing.  Kopp can’t or won’t put himself in a position to get open but Gallo/Bates/Leal can.  We are giving the wrong wings way too many minutes.  Start Gallo and Bates together and give Leal some flipping playing time.

I'd have to go back to watch the film, I forget if Wisconsin got IU into the switch of Kopp on Davis. If they didn't then it's very disappointing from the coaching staff.

It should be no secret that Kopp and Parker can't guard a loaf of bread. Another reason why these kids are both "transfer" kids.

I don't know about minutes but Kopp was hyped about being able to show off more of his game than he did at NW. That tells me he had a discussion with someone in the coaching staff that told him he would have an opportunity to "expand his game." I'm not sure how much that expansion has helped this team.

• Chase Audige is the same size as Galloway, plays just as hard, and is better defensively (Hummel said he may be first team all-B1G defense.. Statistically (per 40 minutes)? He shoots it better, has almost double the steals, has double the rebounds, scores more, and has a far better assist to turnover ratio.  Not sure where in the world Gallo compares.  
• Hakim Hart is really good at a lot of things - defends, fouls far less than Gallo, 85% from the line, al shooting stats world's better than Gallo, over 2:1 Assit/TO, rebounds per 40, steals per 40. All of it.
• Sam Sessoms? He's a waaaaay better shooter than Gallo -- almost 42% from 3pt and has better numbers per 40/min in pretty much every category, including about double the steals and rebounds.

I really like Galloway, but he doesn't compare in pretty much any way (better hair, but...)

Ding, ding, ding you win the big prize!  I am sure there was a discussion before committing from Kopp and for Stewart to return that they would get minutes in the rotation and good, bad or indifferent, the coaching staff doesn’t want to go back on their words. It’s Kopp and Parker who aren’t living up to their end of the deal.

Those are well-rounded players who protect the ball. I really like Galloway, but he doesn't compare in pretty much any way (better hair, but...)

As a player I think Gallo is just scratching the surface.  Chase is what a senior playing big minutes.  He’s a fine player but a finished product.  Without looking it up I doubt his shooting is all that much better.  
I guess it just depends on how you value Gallo.  I see I a kid that knows how to play and that still has a lot of potential to improve if he puts in the work and I believe he will.  He is a young player that has just started playing bigger minutes and missed a lot of time with injury.

Dang it - I said I was done defending Gallo.  Thanks Stuhoo.

I'd be surprised if Race comes back. He's been here since 2017, his roommate is about to get drafted in the second round. He might look to compete for a championship next year at a good program.

The idea of Durr starting next to Jordan makes me want to throw up.

Maybe we go small ball with Jordan at the 5. Johnson - Hood - Trey - Kopp - Jordan. Fun off-season coming here in a 3 weeks.

I still doubt Trayce gets drafted. What position will he even play?  He can’t play the 4 cause he can’t or won’t shoot the 3.  And he definitely can’t play the 5.

Yes Race is getting old as a college player but I would welcome him back if he chooses.  Same with Rob.
