Popular Post Hoosierfan2017 Posted December 1, 2021 Popular Post Posted December 1, 2021 I really didn’t think Lander played that bad last night. He didn’t play at all until the very end of regulation. Had to come in cold at the most important stage. Came in and hit the first free throw and then missed the second at an angle that allowed TJD to get the rebound. Hit a 3 in double overtime to make a 4 point game a 1 point game with 26 seconds left. He stayed in front of his man for the most part. Two turnovers isn’t great, but everyone was turning it over. He was given a turnover for the bad pass from Race which I don’t really think he should’ve been. Hes been know to foul a lot, but he managed to play aggressive defense without fouling (until the very last play of the game). His biggest brain fart was the end of the first overtime play. Idk what happened there. It wasn’t his best game but I think he held his own during the first real road game of his career. Stuhoo, Joe_hoopsier, Trish and 7 others 10 Quote
Honkyman Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 In the bigger picture, the game was not very encouraging imo. IU gave up 112 points to a fairly ordinary, mediocre Syracuse team. Syracuse penetrated almost at will while getting too many open 3s. 26 IU turnovers--7 by Race Thompson and six by TJD? Race Thompson missing two consecutive shots from 2-inches out? Tamar Bates shooting four ill conceived 3-point shots, one from 35 feet? Parker Stewart fouling 90 feet from the basket in overtime? Jordan Geronimo completely out-of-sync. Poor Kristian Lander, who generally played well after Johnson and Phinisee fouled out, failed to execute in the last 10 seconds of the first overtime. The team was unready to play, which has to be on the coaching staff. They seemed totally lost in the first half, as if there was no preparation against the Syracuse zone. It is hard to see how this IU team beats Purdue (soon to be #1 in the nation), Ohio State (which just defeated #1 Duke) or even Wisconsin. Yes, we showed fight after the first half. But a team that shoots 55% from the field including 40% from 3-point range and significantly out rebounds its opponent should win. Miller Kopp played like we hoped he would this season and that was a bright spot. Otherwise, a very frustrating game. Quote
Trish Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 The turnovers are a concern. But, we do have a new PG leading the team along with Kopp and Parker. 6 turnovers for TJD is disappointing but he's play like a 1st team All-America so far this year. It's hard to prepare for the Syracuse zone. You can't replicate it in practice no matter who you are or what staff you have, it's impossible. Some turnovers were expected but it's hard to win with 26 turnovers. It could be a bad loss come March but there's plenty of time to grab some great wins. 110 points was cool to see, first time in years. - Lander played well considering he came in during the biggest moment of the game. - Race just had a bad game, it happens. - Parker and Kopp can shoot, but can they play defense? Ehh.. Did anyone else notice Dane Fife move down towards the middle of the bench? How long has that been a thing or maybe it's just a slight adjustment. Sometimes this occurs when players are bench problems. Thought that was interesting. Stuhoo 1 Quote

He was doing a lot of talking to X after fouling out. jk34, Class of '66 Old Fart and Stuhoo 3 Quote

The players seem to really respect him, always look him in the eyes during the TV timeouts that I've seen. Chris007 1 Quote
Popular Post Chris007 Posted December 1, 2021 Popular Post Posted December 1, 2021 My thoughts after watching the game, then sleeping on it. I don't think it's as bad a loss as some say. I think Syracuse will be a borderline NCAA team when it is all said and done. They're only going to get better and better as the season goes. Way too many turnovers but that's fixable. Letting them shoot 60% in the first half was not good at all. We are getting ready to play in a conference where every game will be like this, so I loved how we fought back and never backed down. X has to keep his head, Rob and Parker can't have the dumb fouls, and Lander is learning. I thought Lander did better, but the experience he got last night you can't duplicate from practice or playing cupcakes. The play in OT where we didn't get a shot off, was the exact same play where Kopp got fouled shooting the 3, we just didn't run it right Woodson said after the game. Jordan G has lots of upsides, but as he showed last night he has a long way to go. We still need to hit Ft's in OT. Missed some big ones there. Officiating was bad both ways, but Cuse got a few more calls IMO Announcing was terrible, Is Jimmy Dykes just waking up this morning from a sleepover at the Boeheims? Stuhoo Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 I am optimistic about this coaching staff's ability to work with X after a frustrating game and keep him locked in moving forward. The X Johnson who wasn't a believer at Pitt has real respect for Woody, Kenya, and Dane. That's gonna matter and be valuable. Chris007, hoosierbgh and ALASKA HOOSIER 3 Quote

Chris007 Posted December 1, 2021 Posted December 1, 2021 I will add one more thing, Bates looked like a true freshman last night. The step-back three in OT that banked of the backboard wasn't what we really needed at the time. But he will only get better with time. Quote

Wisconsin wasn’t predicted to be good this year. Their roster is meh or worse. They’ve played up. At some point we need to project to win road games against average B1G teams. Problem is my mindset is we need to act like a blueblood. We aren’t anymore on the court so we act like a mid level B1G team. Also, I like to project. We have TJD this year. He’s a legitimate All American. We should be good and confident. Next, year without him we take steps back. I can just see this whole thing unfolding ahead of time. Gotta strike while the iron is hot. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app Stuhoo, Loaded Chicken Sandwich, IUc2016 and 1 other 2 2 Quote

Then think that a team that is still learning to play together and with new pieces is going to go on the road to beat them. Hope I'm wrong and your right. Quote

But Wisconsin isn’t the 23rd best team in the land on talent. Not even close. Their roster is crummy. They are playing way above their talent and hitting free throws at an unreal rate. Johnny Davis burst onto the scene. They had the Houston win that sprung them up the rankings. I guess we will see where they end up. My guess is they are 6-9 range in the BIG.
