Hello, just wanted to say that I keep seeing people bring up JB and Matta.  I am one to believe that it would have been announced by now if that was the case.  Kids going into the transfer portal and the media attention they would get from the announcement would be huge. Our candidate has to still be coaching.  No way they fire Archie, pay all that money, then wait weeks to sign someone that doesn’t have a job.

Dolson also wouldn't need help from a 2nd donor in order to offer a salary to Beilein or Matta--neither is in a position to demand anything close to the kind of money Stevens or Beard could get.

Having to do this all again in four or five years is my only and overwhelming problem.

GREAT coach, great integrity, great guy. Everything except for a crucial thing.

In all likelihood JB is only an option if it doesn't work out with any of the other top candidates so it is probably not very likely. However, if it does happen, better to hire a good coach for 4-6 years before he retires than to reach on a coach that is not ready then fire him in 4 years anyway, IMO.

I do have a feeling that Dolson has set his sights on Beard, with Coach Knight back in Bloomington it could be a determining factor in Beard's choice.

That would be great.

Go Arky...I can’t wait to find out.

Are we playing Jeopardy? I’ll take ‘Potential IU Coach’ for $300 Alex:

“Who is the coach who wins a lot, is old, cheats in every way imaginable both in basketball and his personal life, and may be kicked out of basketball in April?”

Looking for winners , I thought plus strippers are added bonus .

Now that I’ve gotten to watch a couple of USC games, really starting to warm to Enfield. They defend aggressively without fouling. No reaching or over-extending. That’s really good coaching. Also like the bones of their offense. They create a lot of good looks, though they don’t shoot it all that well. Thought it would all be about Mobley. It’s not. What he’s doing would travel.

I get the impression that Enfield would be pretty hard to pry out of California. He can coach though.

There's no doubt that Beard checks off a great many of the boxes.  The Texas family factor, style of offense and possibly his buyout are the only concerns I've heard.

I am having trouble reconciling the Knight/Beard/IU thing... Beard worked for Knight immediately after Knight was fired at IU... Knight was extremely bitter -- even vitriolic towards IU... I cannot imagine Beard not hearing any of that, and 10 years of Knight and Patrick beating that drum has to have had some impact in Beard's head...

All of the IU admin that fired Knight is long gone, and Knight has ultimately reconciled (at least to some extent) towards IU, but is that enough to make all of that history a non-issue for Beard?

Maybe yes, maybe no :D

but the possible "show cause" order is a problem... as well as the overall sleazy, slimy aspect.

100% on all this.

Like I said, all candidates have potential downsides. Beilein's unique downside is his age, so it's definitely something to consider. What I'm confused by is the number of people I see saying that hiring Beilein would end their IU fandom, etc. That's just bizarre to me. I don't relish the idea of another coaching search in 5 years but I'm genuinely curious why this would be such a deal breaker for so many people. Alford is like that for me, I wouldn't support this program with him as coach, but there's a perfectly good moral reason for that. Beilein's downsides are real but I can't imagine them being prohibitive to being an IU fan.

I agree because Beilein is one of the best coaches in the country and have no idea why you would stop being a fan of IU if he is hired.  I will back whoever is hired like I have other coaches.  I will give them 4 years to make a judgment on their coaching performance

In the case of Beilein, 4 years is about all he has... I just can't see hiring a dead-end like that... even if JB turns things around, who's to say when his shelf life is up, that the next guy can keep it going?

His buyout isn’t much. 2.5 million.

His offense isn’t Alabamaesque but he has made the tournament in 4/6 years (1 year didn’t go because of Covid) and has never had a first round exit. This includes his 1 year at Arkansas Little Rock when he upset Purdue in the first round. I understand the concern about it, but it’s good enough to win the big 12 and make the national championship game. Plus have another elite 8 appearance.

He was literally 12 seconds away from winning it all against Virginia until Deandre Hunter hit a corner three for Virginia to send it to overtime. He checks all of the boxes IMO. The knight connection is an added bonus and might help sway a decision for him to make a move.

But yeah, the MAJOR factor is his connections and ties to Texas. It’s certainly a long shot, but I did have a dream Tuesday night that he would be our coach so who knows!

I've heard nothing but great things about him.  He was a really nice HS and small college player too.

My best friends son is a manager for the women's program at IWU and we have talk about Tonnegal. It appears he sees coaching more of a way to minster to kids than just coaching basketball.  That is the main reason he has never left IWU and that kind of thing probably don't go well at a lot of schools.

Honestly, after Brad, I think John Beilein is the safest hire out there!

Maybe John can hire Greg Tonagel as an associate head coach!
