Candidate Thread: Thad Matta

Duncomb tweeted iubb...Matta was in the hall yesterday..I’m guessing this is where we end up going and I’m ok with it. Connecting dots

What's interested IMO about the tweet:

1.  The only words he posted are #iubb and the picture was of Duncomb wearing an IU t-shirt.

2.  Duncomb doesn't tweet often.....think this was his first in like six weeks.

3.  Duncomb is an Ohio kid.

Could be nothing, but it would seem like that would bode well toward Duncomb keeping his commitment and that IU was looking at someone that he liked.  I'm positive with Duncomb playing in Cincinnati that he is very familiar with Matta.

I posted this in another thread, but I’ll post it here too. Thad Matta has coached in a final four game more recently than Brad Stevens has. Brad has obviously been busy doing other things, but Matta isn’t some dinosaur. He was an absolutely elite coach, and he did it in the same conference IU is in. There’s no reason to think that a healthy Matta wouldn’t be anything other than great at IU. I don’t really understand any non-health concerns when it comes to him.

Only concern should be whether IU is a good fit for Matta not is Matta a good fit for IU.    I’ve seen too many reports elsewhere that say he wants nothing to do with a job like IU

Well.. he hasn’t had a job since then. If he was healthy like the video that keeps getting posted then...  ?

If you love coaching you don’t quit. He’s been sitting at home the past four years. If you love coaching you get right back into it wherever.

That isn't the smartest thing I've ever read. He was in pain and took time off to get himself right. Nothing to do with loving coaching. Has more to do with loving being able to walk pain free.

As I mentioned.

I was arguing his point in saying Matta has been healthy. Josh mentioned he didn’t quit because of his health. According to the video that keeps getting posted, Matta has been healthy for four years now. Therefor, I stated my case of the passion for coaching.

Yup, this right here. Matta’s a smart guy and he certainly understands that the reason he’s better is that he’s been able to build his life around his health needs. Taking a job like IU punts all of that. I would be shocked if he’s interested in that job in any more than a competitor with an itch sort of way.

I’m curious what about the IU job would make it so different from a school like Ohio State. OSU obviously cares more about football than they do basketball, but they still demand excellence from their basketball program too. And he provided that for them for quite a while.

Being able to go out to eat in public and not being recognized for one.   He could do that at Ohio St, good luck with that at Bloomington

Thad Matta head coach with Michael Lewis as the associate head coach. I would take that.

John Beilein coaches circles around Thad Matta so as I said in the Michael Lewis thread I like Beilein/Lewis.

You really think that he didn’t get recognized at restaurants in Columbus?

I can assure you that isn’t the case

I’m guessing more names will pop up in the next few days. There have been two different favorites today alone.

Not getting stop every 5 min for stuff. Of course he would be recognized but not nearly as bad as it would be at IU.     2 National people, 1 local and 2 Ohio st writers have all said the same thing and told first hand stories of him talking about it
