Knight's teams won in different ways, not always track meets.  He's the best coach ever for a reason.

Knight was awesome! We can’t forget John Wooden, though.

What style is “IU basketball”?  Because from where I sit, it’s been losing.

guess I don’t get the thought that if the name doesn’t come from an individual’s personal list of top two or so, it’s a bad hire.

For the last 20+ years, it's been no ball movement, 3 man weave on offense, win a big game every now and again... get some really good recruits who take us all the way to the Sweet 16... beat a #1 team every now and again... and fail to make the NCAA dance and even the NIT.

I believe it was 87.

Wisconsin had a great team and we're really starting to be a major pain in the @$$ under another guy named Bennett.

It was 87, but Steve Yoder was the coach and they were 4-14 in B1G play...Bennett didn't go to Wisky until 1995...

Correct. I'll never change. Sorry for being consistent I guess? His style can stay in Wisconsin and Virginia.

For me all you have to do is see what he did at Washington State.......yes Washington Freakin State.  That is a testament that shows he can win ANYWHERE.

I, and the rest of this board, have no consensus on who would be a home run other than Brad. Maybe the Woodson and Smart talk is just a way of addressing the complaints from previous searches that IU guys received zero consideration. I think there is some credibility to the conjecture that it was a purposeful leak to signal the aggressive overtures to Brad. However, I fear the result was merely to create inevitable disappointment with any other choice. Although several excellent coaches are being discussed, there is obvious no transformational hire that meets with universal approval. Still hoping for a left field choice that hasn’t been mentioned. Eric Spoelstra , anyone? He only makes 3m.

Exactly.  He adapted to the situation.  When they played the Runnin Rebels in 1987 he knew they would have to up the tempo to win.  So they went on to out score them.  And off to the Championship they went.

What does Indiana basketball mean?

I watch Carmel (the best program in the state right now)...  score 52ppg in the tourney so far. I literally do not care what style it is as long as it's a winning one.

I want a coach that’s gonna instantly turn the program around in year or two, max. When this happens,  I want that coach committed to IU for the long haul and not swayed by big money because of success. I want IU to be the dream job and the final stop.

I know those things will happen to successful programs, but I believe Dolson is the right guy for the job and he is trying to make a statement folks,.....Building a Potential Monster!

Please forgive me,I'm old.

I remember the game and year somewhat.

I want rainbow sprinkles to shoot out of a cloud every time I have an ice cream cone.

It's not that simple--there are no guarantees. Period.

This is good, but I'm not sure it could bust into the Crean top 10 :D

Not at all...I'm old too...But I remember that game well and the stink RMK caused in the post game presser because of the late start time (9 eastern, I think) to accommodate ESPN...

He can win. And he'd win at Indiana and I'd love that. But he and his style don't belong here. We just spent 4 years struggling to score and now we are going to try and not score? Nah. Some coaches fit places well. He doesn't fit Indiana. From personality to playing style.

Nice to see someone remembers.  Not surprised by who.  Smile.
