Right. But just a few years earlier, he had said no to UNC.

He certainly had an easy act to follow in the Matt Doherty experience.  While the guy who follows CAM will likely also have a pretty easy act to follow, I don't think IU is as an easy of sell to Drew as UNC would be for Williams.

Any way, I'll step out of the conversation as Drew simply isn't a guy I want.  But whoever (and whever) is our next coach, I'll be pulling and rooting for them.

It'll be a year of minimal watching for me, more than likely. Our games are a grind to get through. I find little enjoyment in watching Archie ball. Even the wins aren’t enjoyable a lot of the time. I just don't know why they would bring him back if the buyout money is there. Just look at his results:

     T-6th, 9th, T-10th, T-10th in the conference.

     Zero winning conference seasons.

33-44 record in the Big 10.

     0-7 against Purdue

     Zero NCAA tournament appearances

Worst recruiting class in the conference coming in.

We either fire him after this season or we fire him after the next one. Does Scott Dolson really want to go through another season like the past four? There's little reason to believe next year will be any better than this one. Waiting a year saves money but it sets us back quite a bit in recruiting. Firing him after this season makes the most sense, imo, because of the free transfer season we're having after this season. A new coach could step in this year and put together a good roster through transfers. Wait until next year and it'll be several years before we're competing again. Fan apathy will only get worse in that situation.

if 1) the money is there for the buyout and 2) no change is made, my conclusion would be either there's no one out there w/ sincere interest whom Dolson regards as an improvement, or there is someone but he's CURRENTLY unavailable for some reason.

not sure I can think of anyone who truly fits in the latter category (except perhaps the "dream-world" candidates) so I could see IU ending up now or in a year w/ someone like Fife--or another "up-and-comer" like A. Miller (Gates, Kelsey, etc). Even if the preference would be for an "established P5 coach" who theoretically would come to IU for more $$$ than his current gig. This time around, I fear even those guys will be considerably harder to get.

It's longer than that.  He started coaching at Baylor in 2003.  This is his 18th year there.

18 years and two elite 8’s?

Ive seen enough.

Two more than we’ve made during those 18 years ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it’s football school time. This program is on the verge of being toast. :(

If you are going to go by elite 8 appearances as a guideline for your next coach and upset with 2 Elite 8 appearances in that timeframe as a bad thing then that would be pretty high expectations.   I’m guessing only Hall of Fame coaches would have more in that time frame.   Mark Few is a decent coach and I think he only has 2 elite 8 appearances in his time at Gonzaga

I'm not a Drew guy, but two elite eights at Baylor University is good regardless of time frame.  They had been to 1 NCAA tournament in 42 seasons before Drew and have been there 7 times under his tenure.  Factually, prior to Drew coming to Baylor, Nebraska's Big 12 history was better than Baylor's.

All true and he inherited a dumpster fire program that was not only never good but was decimated. So it’s really more about the growth story to me. They’ve gotten better and more consistent over time to the point they are a real threat to win it all

Watching this Cleveland St. team and Dennis Gates is going to be a good one. Impressive only in his second year and had only 4 players stay his first year. Too early for the IU gig but could be outstanding in the years to come.

Maybe we should create a thread for coaching candidates in 2026. We seem to be good at not finding the right guy. Might be good to start discussing our next, next coach.

Not advocating for Gates as I don’t know that much about him or his teams but if he gets it get gets it. Not saying he does but if you see that a guy just relates well to players, coaches, the game comes easy to him, that’s a guy you go get

if IU likes him but is worried he doesn’t have enough experience, don’t worry, UNC or Duke or someone will have no problem recognizing his talent if it’s there
