How did he do last year? I think he's going to be a no for me dawg unless we fall down to 5 or 6

Yep he is 4th or 5th on my list. I could see us getting that far down the list. Maybe more. Bringing the optimism this morning lol

Many of us thought that about Archie. He was a bust.

The whole Archie thing was a great example of comparing a coach with other coaches at that same school. It really is the case that everybody wins at Dayton.

If we end up with 4th or 5th on this, we may be happy.  As long as it not someone that is currently not on the list like last time.  LOL

Cronin took UCLA to a final four in 2020-2021. Cronin has won .684 of his games.

I know that and I know that.

So, you think taking ucla to a FF is as impressive as taking Oklahoma?

Yes.  I really just want a coach that sees fans for what they are and understands how to manage them.  Fans can create an atmosphere that helps the team win and they give money, they're extremely valuable.  But sometimes fans can get lazy or upset/negative, and they need to be managed.  I want a coach that doesn't take fan emotions personally and does not get flustered, especially with online chatter.  Part of being a coach at a big program is managing the fans, it's not that hard, they want to like the coach.

Take our boy Cig for example.  The students were leaving at half time as usual.  Cig didn't like it.  Cig sent the students an email asking them to stay and explained it helps the team.  The students stayed all game.  Then Cig send a follow-up email thanking them.  Perfect!  We also had an issue with fans getting into the stadium on time.  Cig had Dolson send an email to ticket holders.  The problem improved.  Perfect!  Those are great examples of working the fanbase.

The other scenario is when the results suck.  The coach can get quite a bit of leeway by taking responsibility, stating what happened is unacceptable, and promising improvement and detailing how that improvement will occur.  Basically, 100% exact opposite of what Mike Woodson did on senior night last year.

I didn't watch what Cronin said exactly, but it's reasonable to explain to fans they are hurting the team and ask them to stop.  The trick is the coach cannot getting flustered/angry, they need to see themselves as the coach/leader of the fans just as they are the coach/leader of the players.  The fans are fundamentally an asset a coach needs to be able to maximize.

Great post. Fully agree. We need a coach who can be a leader for the players and the fans. Admin too, probably. A guy who earns respect and knows when to command authority.

Nothing you said explains why Michigan agreed to such a low buyout for him to leave, but a high buyout to fire him….

Well it’s not really “high” to fire him, it’s actually pretty low compared normal contract language. It’s 70% of remaining comp. Most from what I can tell are generally 90%+. (Kelsey gets 95% for example). So either his agent sucks, or UM wasn’t completely sold that he was not another flash in the pan— which lots of people here argued last spring. Let’s say Dusty wasn’t good. They give him three years. They’d owe him considerably less than we would owe Woody to leave after 4 if he had been fired, not retired (lol). It’s an incredibly friendly deal for Michigan. Like laughably so.

The voluntary buyout is for sure low, I just don’t think there’s any planet where Michigan negotiates that strictly for Dusty to benefit and bolt after one season. Not with how bad the involuntary is for him.  Honestly his whole contract is pretty wonky compared to others, but if I was to chalk that up to anything it would be Michigan not being all in on basketball. It’s important there absolutely, but it is and will always be an afterthought. Maybe it really was “I’ll agree to an incredibly bad deal if I get fired if you agree to a relatively low voluntary buyout” that just seems really unlikely to me.

sorry for the ramble, I find these contract things fun, it’s wild in the NBA lol

Yes because this isn’t John Wooden’s UCLA. You said he hadn’t done anything that impressive. He did the same exact thing, lol. Sampson had Blake Griffin on that team.

Well then stop rehashing **** that everyone on here is already aware of. I believe one of the mods has already made comments towards this very thing. We get it, you have daughters, and don't like Beard. I have daughters and I like Beard as a coach. Who cares? If you don't have something valid to add to his coaching prowess or how he'd be a good fit/bad fit, coaching wise, then I can only assume you're not done saying your peace and that we should create a separate thread for DV discussion so you can unload over there. Good day sir

I need a guideline, when coach X is advocated for, who decides if we allowed to talk about off the court issues? Post game interviews? Culture fit? Are we allowed 1 negative post for every positive post? Is there some grand arbiter of coaching criticism I can consult?

Has it happened to McDermott? If so I might be jumping out of the mail van

Yeah.  His only non 20 win season at Creighton he was 14-19 and you could consider all 4 years at Iowa st as a down year

Misremembered. So you think a Final Four is different from a Final Four?

Oh absolutely. Sampson didn't have a single nba guy on the roster and won 30 games and went to a FF. Cronin had 4 or 5.

Cronin and Sampson is a really bad comparison for Cronin fans.

Never been in a fight or watched MMA, I see.  Choking someone from behind does not indicate they were running away…

Can't let the absent use of a safe word go too long. These things are put in place for a reason
