Misremembered. So you think a Final Four is different from a Final Four?

Oh absolutely. Sampson didn't have a single nba guy on the roster and won 30 games and went to a FF. Cronin had 4 or 5.

Cronin and Sampson is a really bad comparison for Cronin fans.

I’m not a Cronin “fan” for the record. Just think those turning their noses up at him should prepare to be thoroughly disappointed with whoever the next hire ends up being. You said he hadn’t done anything as impressive as going to a F4, I didn’t realize going to a F4 was different than going to a F4. Sorry!

How did he do last year? I think he's going to be a no for me dawg unless we fall down to 5 or 6

Holy hell, I hope he no higher than anyones 5 or 6. Stevens, May, Golden, Otz, Few and a couple more are all easily higher on my list, wouldn't be Archie, Woodson level hires, and likely the best coach since Sampson.

I need a guideline, when coach X is advocated for, who decides if we allowed to talk about off the court issues? Post game interviews? Culture fit? Are we allowed 1 negative post for every positive post? Is there some grand arbiter of coaching criticism I can consult?

I could be wrong but I could've sworn someone had mentioned putting the obvious off court things to rest and focus more on the coaching fit

Those that want IU to be good would love a Cronin hire.  Those that want IU to be great, not so much.

My point is, IU’s culture is losing. If we don’t hire a particular coach, it should because of what he can’t do on the court. When I see comments about winning press conferences and not a fit for IU’s culture, I have to laugh that some IU fans think we are in a position to care about stuff like that. I don’t want Cronin. But not because of his demeanor.

Looking at a resume and skipping over the personality and fit is what we did with Archie Miller.

That has been stated by Old Fart at least, possibly other mods. I’m not trying to delve into the discourse (again) people have their views and it won’t change. To me it makes no sense to put a gag order on Beard’s off court conduct since it can affect what happens on the court and we discuss anything and everything about all other candidates. You can’t really separate the two IMO. Anytime he comes up, his coaching ability and history off the court will come up. That’s the full picture of the candidate.

"As impressive as taking Oklahoma to a final four"...

If he'd taken Cinci (which he couldn't he went 6-9 in the NCAAT and only one sw16) to the final four .... I would have those as equals (Oklahoma to FF and Cinci to FF)...

So you're as impressed with Tennessees football season as you are IUs? You'd consider those equal coaching jobs? By Heupel and Cignetti?

Whining about 7500 fans booing in their almost 14,000 seat gym lol. Brother, a sparse crowd at Assembly is roughly Pauley’s capacity. You’re not built for IU.

He seems completely unsuited to the 24/7 thing here. But in fairness to the guy, he seems like he probably knows it and I doubt this job would interest him.

Well it’s not really “high” to fire him, it’s actually pretty low compared normal contract language. It’s 70% of remaining comp. Most from what I can tell are generally 90%+. (Kelsey gets 95% for example). So either his agent sucks, or UM wasn’t completely sold that he was not another flash in the pan— which lots of people here argued last spring. Let’s say Dusty wasn’t good. They give him three years. They’d owe him considerably less than we would owe Woody to leave after 4 if he had been fired, not retired (lol). It’s an incredibly friendly deal for Michigan. Like laughably so.

The voluntary buyout is for sure low, I just don’t think there’s any planet where Michigan negotiates that strictly for Dusty to benefit and bolt after one season. Not with how bad the involuntary is for him.  Honestly his whole contract is pretty wonky compared to others, but if I was to chalk that up to anything it would be Michigan not being all in on basketball. It’s important there absolutely, but it is and will always be an afterthought. Maybe it really was “I’ll agree to an incredibly bad deal if I get fired if you agree to a relatively low voluntary buyout” that just seems really unlikely to me.

sorry for the ramble, I find these contract things fun, it’s wild in the NBA lol

I would say it is exactly that, Dusty insisted on a low buyout and Michigan countered with a lower buyout if he is fired. I wouldn’t call 70% that low but I’m sure it is lower than a lot of other coaches. Now the question is, why did Dusty insist on that low buyout? In case the Indiana job became available and they wanted him is as good an explanation as I can think of, but maybe he has his eye on another job?

Great post. Fully agree. We need a coach who can be a leader for the players and the fans. Admin too, probably. A guy who earns respect and knows when to command authority.

Cig has done it.  I was looking at next season and getting worried we may lose some games and maybe only get to 7 or 8 wins.  Then I had this wave of guilt that I was letting Cig down with my self-imposed limitations that should not be part of our new football culture!  I snapped out of it and started thinking about another playoff run…

Might not of had an NBA player but he had really good college basketball players.  Hollis Price was a stud

Who will make IU great? Assume Stevens and May say no

What about the huge buyout?

Not my money, but definitely something that Dolson needs to consider. Do you pay up for him vs take a shot on a younger, “higher upside” coach for cheaper? Does that fit where IU is right now after the last 8 years?

I see what you’re saying, I just don’t think it matters that much. They’ve accomplished similar things, the brand recognition of where they did it at is moot. Bottom line IMO, he’s shown he’s capable of making a F4 only a few years ago and he goes dancing every season. I think that’s worth IUBB considering at this point. Bob Knight reincarnated isn’t walking through those doors any time soon.

5 or 6 seems a reasonable spot for him.

Who do we think was in the 5 or 6 spot for UK and UofL last year?
