Would you be surprised to know he once said in a nationally televised interview that "if rape is inevitable just lay back and enjoy it" to the female interviewer?

RMK was given a free pass because he won Nattys..that's why the "holier than thou" attitude from IU is a joke...

That was Connie Chung interview late 1980’s….Knight said his statement was misinterpreted…..comparing it to an airplane going down and what can you do about it…..knight viewed himself as a perfectionist on the English language and History)….Connie Chung took a little smack on her shoulder and facial cheek as they were talking about control and Knight demonstrating encouragement.

Or you could just say that was an incredibly stupid and inappropriate thing to say, and especially to a reporter. RMK was a great basketball coach and mind, one of the best ever. He was also a complete idiot at times.

That's just it many who claim they want no part of beard I bet were huge knight supporters. Hypocrisy.at its finest. But I'm sure the comeback will be but knight never laid his hands on anyone. But wait he actually did at least twice. And I've seen that clip about the rape comment.

What about other schools with big recruits coming in like Houston, Rutgers, Baylor, etc?  Is their NIL a lot better?  PSU and Butler both have a top 40 guy coming in.

UCLA's entire team minus Kobe Johnson has eligibility left. The emphasis on recruiting a bunch of 5* in each class and making them the cornerstone of your team no longer exists. I have zero concerns with Cronin's ability to recruit, especially in the Midwest with IU's NIL resources.

By the way, need some board consistency. You say that his recruiting sucks while @Certified Sunshine Pumpersays he underachieves with a ton of top talent. Which is it?

Their recruiting has been excellent, last year he shifted from HS recruits to transfers and got a Top 10 class.

Don't embellish what I said, though.

ehhhh... to some of your "points"

but.. I thought he was begging for the job?

Skeptical is fair, though, and I'm still not clamoring for him as much as I am bored and like discussing things.

Please to F***.... #anyonebutcronin

What is wrong with Cronin

I thought all we cared about is winning and he does that at a good rate. I wonder have him in my top 5 of realistic candidates

Stevens- not sure if realistic

May

McCollum

Cronin

Nothing other than he yells too much and is "mean to his players" for the soft portion of this fanbase.

So during Woody's tenure/struggles AND when IU decided to move on, you had Cronin in mind as the new hire? I'm sure he'd be fine, but I doubt most people were thinking, yes, Cronin's the guy to turn this around.

Boring basketball.

You may have seen some Drake games this year, but have you watched any of his 4 national championship teams play?  They did not play that way.  He adopted that style this season to win games with the roster he had.  A coach that adapts.....hmm.

Save this post and use it against me in the future if you can.

If we DON'T get Stevens, then 5 years from now, McCollum will be universally viewed as a better coach than whoever we end up hiring.

Honestly most of the hate probably comes from his height.  After the Archie era I don’t think most fans want another coach who needs a stool at every press conference.  That said, I would take him if Brad says no and Beard isn’t an option.

If we get into the second tier options, how would people rate the following:

Buzz Williams

Mick Cronin

Ben McCollum

If we get one of them so be it, it means that was probably the best we could do.  I would hope for the best.  McCollum would be really interesting — seems like a wider range of potential outcomes with him.

It seems like it would be easy enough for Stevens to be eliminated quickly if he either 1. wasn’t a realistic option or 2. Doesn’t want to leave Boston.

The fact that this has continued, to me, seems to indicate it’s a real possibility.

What has continued? Message board speculation? Why would Stevens or Dolson have any reason to comment if not asked? Stevens isn’t coaching, so he isn’t doing post-game interviews. It would be really weird to issue a statement about the IU job and only create more media attention.

Good post, your last blurb is an angle that I haven’t seen explored here all that much. Don’t think anybody has disputed McCollum is a great ball coach. Their concerns are mainly with 1) lack of P4 experience and 2) style of play… you mention he’s shown the ability to adapt style of play to his roster. Big positive. And the lack of P4 experience, IMO, would not be such an issue in most cases but this cycle feels like an exception after the last 8 years we’ve gone through. The upside is tremendous… normally I’d be inclined to push for that. Everyone’s gotta start somewhere and work their way up. Someone has to be first to take a flyer at the P4 level and that goes for every coach. Just think that if they can help it, they should try to get a sure thing who has proven he can consistently win at this level. An old Bezos quote about if you have a 10% chance to get a 100x return, you should take it every time. I don’t think the chance is that low with McCollum, but you can and probably should try to find more of a sure thing based on the context of IU’s recent history and new advantage in NIL.

Of the guys who I could see realistically take the IU job, he's my #1. Otzelberger and Will Wade are my 1 and 2 but I don't see Otz leaving ISU and I have finally resigned myself to accepting the IU brass won't approach Wade. I would take Oats, Beard, and Scott Drew over Cronin in a heartbeat but they aren't realistic candidates and the Stevens talk is pure nonsense that I won't even entertain. May, Williams, McCollum, etc would feel a lot like settling at this point.

Cronin cleaned up Alford's mess quickly, wins on a consistent basis which is the thing I like the most about him, has a hardass-mentality which is needed here, and has ties to the Midwest which will help with recruiting given IU's NIL resources.
