As a person who’s lived and breathed the Roy Williams era at UNC trust me when I say that May can get you a championship.  He grinds, he cares, always learning, and with our NIL we’ll get our fair share of elite recruits. Roy Williams wasn’t a genius but he had the proper resources around him.

Williams had a very good run at Kansas before UNC. They are not the same…yet.

Well obviously right now. He also had the resources at Kansas.  Still couldn’t pull off a natty with them as well. May is smarter. Just my opinion.

May is one of the riskiest moves Dolson could make right now. Hiring a guy away from a conference rival adds a whole different level risk to navigate.

The IU search committee nearly pulled it off in 2001.

There are 2 buyouts:

1) The school fires him. That is 70% of the remaining contract which puts this buyout at about $11M currently. This money goes to the coach.

2) May decides to leave, i.e. he gets another job somewhere else like, say, IU. This is at $5M and will soon drop to $4M. This money goes to the school.

So you're original post that I replied to which stated they kept it at $5M to make it cheap to fire him is incorrect.

Even so, he's not coming here and I'd put money on it

I don’t pay for Peegs content, but someone on another site said Rabjohns hinted that Dolson has his guy and is hiring the search firm just for optics.

I highly doubt he “has his guy” at this point. None of these college coaches are making deals right now and the Celtics are in second place in the east. Maybe more along the lines of we will listen after the season

I think there are some jobs — or were, even SEC football powers actually make smart basketball hires now — where an AD can basically make the football program work and be seen as a success. Once upon a time, if they needed to hire a basketball coach, they might really lean into connections from their own prior stops and a search firm’s work, and end up with a guy who got a favor because the firm owed his agent and he had a passable resume.

IU isn’t that job and IU doesn’t have that kind of AD. Search firms are able to help with things like backup checks, maybe keeping some comms out of FOIA-susceptible places, maintaining plausible deniability, etc.

So yeah even if Dolson is laser-focused on one guy, and they’re more-or-less communicating without intermediaries, there’s some reason to hire a firm.

Here's a question:

How many people are there below the age of 50 who served as head coach of an NCAA men's basketball team that appeared in a Final Four?

Never mind, the answer is three.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.  Can you name them?

Bonus question:

And this is just a question.  Not directed at anyone, but an honest question.

How much of a role do you suppose financial or material inducements (NIL, cars, houses, a tractor) played in building those final four rosters?

I can think of 4 off the top of my head without even researching…

Stevens

May

Knight

Donovan

Knight won at age 36

Donovan won 2 in a row at ages 40-41

I think May might be a better coach. Williams was great at playing “the game” to win though.

Half the fan base won’t be against but the love May gets on this board doesn’t exist with the average fan. He wouldn’t win the presser at this point. That might change if he makes a deep run in the tournament.

I think Dusty May wins the press conference more than Beard.

But I think Beard wins more games.

And titles.
