General Coach Candidate News

Here's something to consider. The job is still the same job. The school is still the same school. None of that has changed. Just because it was first offered to a "big name" coach with massive ties to the state doesn't change any of that. Has the job itself become any less attractive because Stevens said no? Not in my eyes.

I would have to think any other candidates would have enough self confidence (or ego) that the idea it was offered to someone else first would not deter them. I would think it makes a prospect think "here's a school that is REALLY looking to do something big and not just tread water. I want to be a part of that."

Yeah, I agree, it's still a great job. And to be clear, I never thought Stevens saying no had much to do with it. More so our all out eggs in one basket pursuit of Stevens. I know its common to have a top target in a search like this. Maybe the way we pursued Stevens isn't any different that most coaching searches. I don't know. I don't want to beat a dead horse with this. I feel better about it today not that I've had ample time to pout :-). It also helps that nobody has agreed with me so far.

HA! It IS an odd thing to feel good about, but I get what you are saying.

The masses are clearly testy today.

I’d recommend watching a full day of basketball.

Have peace in knowing Dolsen and the donors want IU to be a winner. That’s why Archie is gone now. We have to have some peace and trust. If it’s not Brad Stevens there are reasons for that. I think we aim big still. And if not, and you hate the new coach, drop IUBB for new hobbies.

That’s my plan.

Agreed. Or as the kids say.... “100!”

No matter who the next coach is Michael Lewis should get a huge raise to come home. Young, offensive mind, good recruiter, worked under good coaches including Stevens. Bring him home to groom him to be the next guy.

That what I’m talking about!

Beard would LOVE him. As he should.

You can pair him with Beilein, Beard, Musselman, or Enfield.

That’s part of the reason I’m all in on John Beilein.  Not saying he would bring Lewis or another IU guy with him but certainly possible.  Does anyone know who was on the Beilein staff when he was at Michigan?  Was it Michigan guys on his bench?

Not quite, however, he did have 2 assistants from the State of Michigan in his final year

I don’t think so but I think you can make that part of the offer. Beilein would have 5 years to make a final four or Lewis takes over.

Honestly, while that would be a big disappointment, I'll take that over something like Alford or some other coach outside of the Beard, Musselman, Oats, etc. group.

I think in 3-4 years Beilein could have IU knocking on the door of a FF.  I don’t know if it’s possible to get Fife away from Izzo to be with Beilein.  Or substitute Fife with Lewis.  Or Calbert if he has the desire.

For the bulk of his tenure it was Jeff Meyer, LaVall Jordan and Bacari Alexander...

Both Meyer and Jordan were assistants at Butler pre-dating Stevens.

Sorry I’ve heard firsthand that Calbert would rather work in the NBA instead of recruiting. Plus his wife told my wife she would never live in Bloomington.
