General Coach Candidate News

I think Cronin and Brownell are both “good” coaches but in no world would I think either one was a good enough coach to justify their buyouts, especially on top of whatever “settlement” payout Woodson will likely get (as of April 1st Brownell’s would be $8.33 million and Cronin’s would drop to $10 million).

And for those who want to point to Allen’s buyout, that was a markedly different situation-the donors weren’t coming up with the $15 million then so they could come up with another huge bag in order to pursue a “name” or “elite” coach, they signed a coach who was making less than $1 million a year in his previous job.

If I were a big donor and Dolson came to me needing a bag for a buyout of a coaching candidate, it would need to either be a less expensive, or more impressive, name than Brownell or Cronin, or their  specific buyouts would have to be negotiated significantly lower.

Isn't there a clause in Cronin's contract that can lower it by a significant amount?  That's what Rabjohn's (who I assumed heard it from Eric) said.  I'm unsure if it's an IU specific clause or something else, but that was a pretty clear thing that Rabby didn't talk around that he put out there.

If Indiana doesn’t make the dance. I’m personally expecting an NBA announcement whether it be a Brad Stevens or Billy Donovan. Maybe throw Jay Wright in there, that announcement would be Monday-Wednesday of next week.
If Indiana makes the dance, we’ll find out the following week.
I’d say it’s Brad Stevens / Jay Wright / Billy Donovan. Ben McCollum will go to Iowa. Brownell I don’t believe is a serious candidate despite media rumblings. At least he shouldn’t be a serious candidate. I’d be absolutely shocked if he was the guy.
Now that's what I'm saying!....one of those three and we are ready to roll.

You would think there are 100 reasons to run from LA as a midwestern guy….taxes alone must be killing him…he will have much more take home pay in Indiana….

My (possibly mistaken) understanding was that Donovan is only under contract with the Bulls for the remainder of this season, which for them could be mid-April.

But I have no idea how he feels about college BB these days.

Well if you are, please stay at Clemson.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t disagree with most of what was said….

L.A. or Indiana?   Hmmmm?  Quite the decision.

More likely that you're Woody. After all, Brownell actually has a game to prepare for. Woody, well, we all know he doesn't work very hard, so he has plenty of time to hang out on this forum, like the rest of us degenerates...LOL

This has always been the most compelling argument.  You can see what the change in ownership has done to the Mavericks, and you can see who's getting the blame for it, their GM NIco.  Getting out now gives him a free ticket to go back for big money into another GM job, no matter what he does coaching.

The Celtics as constructed have nowhere to go but down.

The Celtics have been very good to Brad. They made him their head coach after 6 years of mid-major college experience. Then after a Woodyesque 7 years as a professional  coach, moved him to the front office and now pay him 11+mill a year to build championship rosters. Which he has done. That's why it has been ludicrous to think he would go back to coach college for anyone.

You aren't allowed to turn down a Crowne invite, it's in the TV contract.  At least that's been what's been advertised.  So if Indiana gets asked (and they will) they have to go.

"Under terms of the proposed arrangement, the top 16 teams in the Big 12, Big East and Big Ten that did not qualify for the NCAA tournament  — as ranked by the NET — would be required to play in the Fox event even if they are invited to the NIT. Those three leagues have rights deals with Fox. The network also has a rights agreement with the Pac-12, but it is unclear whether that league would be added due to complications arising from the Pac-12’s impending realignment defections."

I can’t confirm whether or not it’s required to attend if chosen, if it is, I don’t think a lot of teams are going to have a FULL roster to compete. The portal opens up on the 24th for Men, this tournament begins the 31st.  This doesn’t make sense for coaches/players that want to hit the portal as soon as it starts. I read the players will be paid for competing, but again, what if they want out of their current school and want to compete in the portal? What if that player gets hurt while intending to enter the portal?

This tournament needs to occur in November, not early April.

At this moment, Ohio State is NET #40, Northwestern is NET #53, and IU is NET #54. But I can certainly see the TV suits demanding Indiana over Northwestern.

Top two are automatic, but there's 16 teams being filled from just the 3 conferences.   So IU will get an invite regardless.

If it's one of those 3 then I gotta think it's Stephens - solely because of the quiet nature of all this. Ultimately the Stephens are tight knit and Tracy makes sure it stays that way. She manages all facets of the legal side and money - playing agent/manager/lawyer (Brad's mentioned it in a number of interviews).

That being said it'd be over the moon over 90% of the coaches mentioned in this thread - but any of this 3 are a grandslam imho.

Thanks for clarifying. What a ridiculous concept this thing is in the portal era. I'm voting with my feet, I won't be watching.
