Can we start the Jay Wright discussion? Now that's a homerun hire if we can convince him to come out of retirement. You can only golf for so long!

Are you now off the Stevens wagon all of a sudden too?

Yes I agree. I don't think we're going to hire a crappy coach.

They will earn their time by not stinking up the joint. Fans will need some level of patience in all likelihood.

Maybe its a 1 year turnaround like Louisville with Kelsey. If it takes until year 3 to really start rolling, that's fine too.

You have to assess everything in real time and go from there. I just have a hard time envisioning another 4 year burnout.

I think that's a good thing.

You have more faith than I do. I have absolutely zero confidence IU can get it right. In the last 25 years the only legitimately good coach they've hired was Sampson, after him it'd be Crean and he had red flags at Marquette they should've seen.

A crappy hire would be far less surprising than a good hire, they haven't given us a reason to be confident.

Shoulda added Shertz to my list - I could get behind any of these 4 -  Huss, McCollum, Devries, Shertz.

I'm honestly excited about this generation of up and comers - much more then the Mack, Cronin, Miller trio we had 2 searches ago - it very well could be my crimson colored glasses or recency bias but they just seem more prepared for the big stage.

Everyone's coming around on McCollum; if Schertz had stayed at ISU one more year, he might be in position to be the darling hire.

Here's a fun what-if: Schertz stays at ISU for one more year. He brings his team back for one more go-round. Watching them last year vs. watching Drake this year and last year, I have a hard time imagining Drake beating them in the conference tournament again.

I think SLU will be killing it within a year or two, and he'll get a big job. But the irony is that he seems to have set himself back with the IU job by taking a bigger job.

This is crazy.  Maybe Dolson has had his guy the whole time and this external view is hilarious.  But if you follow the media train, they act like we've missed on 8 guys already.  Its kinda funny.  Whole really knows who the target is besides Stevens.

I do know it wasn't Brownell so if it ends up being him, **** hit the fan.

There's just no way we hire Brad Brownell. If we do, we truly are not a serious program that wants to win big and people in the college basketball world really do look at IU as a nightmare. Hiring him would tell me every single candidate above him (and there better be at least 10) turned us down.

We the fans think there's never been an easier time to be the head coach at Indiana but actual coaches apparently think the opposite if all this ends with Brownell. Not trying to be super negative but man, it's getting very hard to be excited about IU basketball. Football has become what we look forward to and that's pretty awesome but also sad. Why can't we have both?

It can, and it will. I've been looking forward to IUFB every year since about 1982 or so. Now I'm just on cloud nine and it's amazing up here. Dolson knocked it out of the park with the football hire and having Whitten at the top to fix the overall nightmare of IU Athletics the last decade keeps me at ease. We'll be fine folks.

IU has had the worst 15 year stretch in its history. There’s absolutely no way Dolson can sell a hire who has made fewer tournaments than IU during that same stretch. Good coaches elevate their programs. Brownell hasn’t.

Brownell did set the record for most wins in a season at Clemson, if you buy that stat. He also has as much, or more, tourney success than Barnes albeit over a much longer time frame.

With that said, he doesn’t move the needle for me. At all.

I don’t particularly want Schertz, but I will say this—I saw Saint Louis play very early in the season and they were a train wreck on both ends of the floor.  While still not a great team now, they have improved more during the season than maybe any team I’ve seen this year.

This.

People don't understand that SLU was awful last year.

Will also say that there's a case that can be made about McCollum's style being fun to root for if a team is winning. Maybe it adjusts with more talent.

Schertz's style would be incredible and fun at a place like Indiana.

The more we talk about this, the more I find myself saying, 'Hire Schertz!'

I doubt Schertz would have been able to keep the band together at ISU.  Lots of teams were already in on the better players.

I don't disagree with any of that.

I'm just very high on the idea of McCollum or Huss.

All we can do is wait and see who the hire ends up being.

Support them and hope they reach their potential.

Much more appealing than rooting for Brownell to get over the hump IMO.

Was always unlikely we'd get a tier 1A guy.

And mid-P5 guys vs. promising mid-majors is a debate for sure, I guess.

I likely won’t get the whole story until some time afterwards but yes, it does appear that he did not get his man unless his man was always a lesser tier/lesser accomplished coach all along but I don’t think that is the case at all.

My fear is he misjudged things and despite thinking he was starting the search on 3rd base was actually still standing in the on deck circle.
