cbp4iu Posted April 21, 2022 Posted April 21, 2022 I have a question on the Transfer Portal it might be dumb.... So take it easy on me with the criticism. When you enter the Portal does that automatically forfeit your scholarship for the next season? For instance... I know it won't happen but let's say Parker Stewart decided to withdraw his name from the portal and said he's returning after lets say TJD announced he's returning.. Would Indiana still be on the hook of that scholarship or would the only way Parker be eligible to return is by walk on. Also once a player enters the Portal can a coach block his return? Quote

A coach does not have to allow a player to return to the team. If parker says he wants to withdraw from the portal Woody can say tough luck. He is not obligated to take Parker back go iu bb, Class of '66 Old Fart, MemphisHoosier and 2 others 5 Quote

Schollies are a year to year award. So if Parker wanted to come back the coaching staff does not have to offer it. Quote

For instance, last year Jordan Geronimo, Lander, and others went into the portal when Archie was fired. After they met Woody and staff, they decided to return to IU. We didn't have to take them back or re-offer them a scholarship, but both IU and the players agreed that upon their return they would be scholarship athletes. And therefore, they counted against our 13 scholarships. Quote

JG and Lander were coveted thus the offer was there for those specific players. While at the UNC athletic department I always had a couple of “disagreements “ with how their women’s soccer coach allocated schollies. At that time Coaches could even give half a scholarship or even a 25% scholarship to a player to entice them to stay or to make them leave. Quote

Once they're in the portal they are the same status as any other player in the portal. IU can choose to take them back or not, and to do so either with or without a scholarship offer. RaceToTheTop Posted April 21, 2022 Posted April 21, 2022 Honestly, with NIL money, it's possible that an athlete could choose to go to a power 5 school and make enough NIL money that it pays more to be a non-scholarship athlete there than a scholarship athlete at a low major. RaceToTheTop Posted April 21, 2022 Posted April 21, 2022 New portal entry and likely will be one of the most sought after ones -- Northern Iowa's A.J. Green entering the portal and also testing the NBA waters (not likely to get drafted). After four years at Northern Iowa, Green has put together four year averages of 17.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, and 2.6 apg. 41/38/90 shooter. Has been a bulk three point shooter; put up 14.4 shots per game, half coming from three. ray, thebigweave, NVFalcons1990 and 2 others 5 Quote

I guess it will also depend on what interest he receives elsewhere, which will likely be plenty. rcbowla, RaceToTheTop and NVFalcons1990 3 Quote

So that would mean the Student Athlete Bill of Rights thing that was instituted a few years ago wouldn’t be in effect and IU wouldn’t be on the hook to honor the original scholarship? Heck, I don’t even know if the SA Bill of Rights is a thing anymore. Didn’t it essentially say that if we awarded a scholarship and they played gets cut from the team we still honor the scholarship? Please pardon my ignorance in the subject. Quote
