Brass Cannon

So some concerns I’m having...

Recommended Posts

I was at the game tonight so I missed some of the recent discussion. This was my first game seeing live this year, and The one thing that stood out to me in particular was how awful this team is on fast breaks. Like pitifully terrible. They have no clue how to capitalize on a numbers advantage or where to pass the ball. Ok guy just kind of dribbles and either slows it down or passes it too late to our guy on the block, forcing him to go low and slow down, allowing the defense to catch up. I’m all for controlling the pace of the game in the half court, but when’s team is this bad shooting the ball you need to capitalize on empty possessions by the opposition. Our points off turnovers ratio must be one of the worst in the country.

The team has no, and I REPEAT NO, offensive mind set.  They are coached that way.

My biggest fear is that our recruiting starts suffering, like Brooks goes elsewhere, and we start losing more recruits to our rival Midwest schools. We had a little momentum with Romeo and TjD. If we keep losing Archie may never be able to dig us out of this hole.

Sadly I think you may be right.

Honestly, if we lose out its gonna be interesting what happens. Will be pressure to make some changes somewhere.
That is what i am thinking. Losing out or anything close would be insane and i would think archie could even possibly be fired in that unlikely but yet very possible scenario. I mean there is bad and then there is what we are seeing

I was talking to someone earlier yesterday and he was talking about Miller being fired. I said, "He isn't going to get fired after 2 seasons, that would be ridiculous." He responded, "What if they lose out?" That thought had never crossed my mind. After last night, that is a real possibility.

This.  When Rob is leading the break he gives up the ball way too early and isn’t putting his teammates into position to score.  He’s not alone but I’ve been noticing this more often.  Last night in transition,  he twice threw it to Juwan barely past half court when Juwan really wasn’t open or have a lane to make something happen.  It was just like he had to get it out of his hands.  A PG needs to realize what his teammates capable of and where.  What’s Juwan going to do with it from there?  Nothing.  It’s like this team needs to run the 3 on 2, 2 on 1 drill we all ran in grade school through high school.

Awesome now if we could just win the games where we are more talented then we will be set.

That’d be great. It’s not going to happen this year. Outside of the starting five from last night there’s clearly no one else able to step up.

I was directly responding to the previous page where people were worried about recruiting slowing down.

Something I just noticed. Looking back at Archie’s Dayton tenure, he actually regressed in wins and losses from year 1 to year 2. Then in year three they broke out to 26 wins. He didn’t have less than 24 wins (4 years) the rest his time at Dayton.

So while things look bleak and there are concerns, be patient and let him get a roster of his guys.

Also, the Big Ten giving is this many road games in January is ridiculous. Hopefully we get some confidence back and win some games down the stretch, as we will be at home more.

The lack of depth is very pronounced.

Things Im watching moving forward:

1. If we lose out (or only win 1-2 more) starting three 4 stars and a 5 star what are the ramifications of that?

2. How many guys leave the program? Obviously several bad fits.

3. How does Archie fill any open spots? Can he re tool quickly and be competitive next year?

I'm not sure how different the public narrative is compared to what actually goes on behind the scenes, but I'm starting to get a little frustrated when I watch Archie in his radio show and his post-game pressers. He basically keeps saying, "We need to just keep working harder and trying to get better at what we do."

When you lose eight in a row, what you do clearly isn't working. Maybe try something different? It couldn't hurt at this point ...

Try something different?  LOL  I have been saying that for awhile now.  But you get the "He ain't got his players".  You get the "The players aren't a good fit for his system".  And now my favorite "You got to buy into the culture".

We are losing.  The season is going down the proverbial toilet.

Archie seems to be a guy where you got to win his way, or he would rather lose his way.

My new favorite, "it's the fans' fault".

Difference is at Dayton he lost 3 senior starters at Dayton after his first year. Going by our starters at the end of last year we have lost 1 and replaced him with a 5 Star “One and Done”.

Very different situations. We have players who appeared to be getting it last year. Who now we can’t even stand to watch play.

"we need to just keep working harder"   CAM quote the last 6 weeks.  That means, he has no idea how to get his team back in order.  Coach K, Izzo, Self, they will all tell you they need to work harder also.  What is going on down in Bloomington is just a GD embarrassment.  These aren't the right players for the system is an excuse.  There has been ZERO player development in the last few years. What Offense are they running?  What is their Defensive scheme? 8 L's in a row in Big Ten Play is a non starter for this program, my expectations anyway.  We also shouldn't lose to Rutgers or 8 games in a row.  Stop this miserable train wreck already.  Quite clear we need to get yet ANOTHER Coach to come in and rebuild (Think about next year....this year minus Morgan and Romeo + Freshman...wow....they are going to be worse)....Get rid of Glass Get rid of Miller...STOP THE EMBARRASSMENT.

I'll preface this by saying that I am not one of the people who thinks we need to fire Archie. I also get that I don't get to see practices, etc.

Having said that, this has been my concern - the lack of trying something different. Look how long it took for him to decide they needed help on their free throw shooting. The start of games has been an issue all season, but the only time we've seen lineup changes is due to injuries. As poorly as they've played in many games recently, there is little attempt to go to the bench and try someone different.

I totally get that he wants to play the guys who work hard in practice. Reward guys for their effort. But if they are sleepwalking through the games - what kind of message is that sending? You don't get any points for practice. What incentive is there to bust your butt if you know you're playing 35 minutes no matter what?  Continuing to do the same things harder gets you more of the same.

He has been very good at being upfront about the problems with this team, but not so good at coming up with solutions.
