Are the "open gyms" video taped for later review. It's hard to believe that the coaches don't get some kind of feedback about how those go. In other words, there are ways to be in the gym without "being in the gym".

I’m not sure. Like I said, the rules probably changed from 20 years ago, but when I played the coaches were not allowed in the gym if the team was playing pickup in the Fall/Spring. They were “voluntary” sessions technically, but the coach could not be in the gym with us playing.

His office was right down the hall and he’d make up reasons to walk through each day and take a quasi attendance, but otherwise he couldn’t be in there or film them. We were allowed to have small group sessions in the Spring and Fall with the coach, but not team workouts. He would ask various players who was playing well, who wasn’t, etc. every day, but he couldn’t watch

Again, the rules may have, and probably most likely have, changed.

I’m not quite sure what an “A$$-a-muck” is, but somehow that seems spot on.
Wish I was there to watch the mighty Nips slay the Purdooders in that bar.
Hell, I wish I was in any bar with NaplesHoosier!

Not only was that guy a dbag, his comment doesn't even make sense lol. Both are state schools and cost roughly the same amount per year.

Hell no you couldn't afford to go to Purdue. Who can afford to waste 4 years on that ugly campus, looking at ugly girls, sitting in that ugly bannerless arena and dreaming about being in Btown?

I figured it would be too expensive using all that gas money to find half decent females.

Well its official i think we all agree have 2 players guaranteed to start.

PG - Green/Phinisee

SG - Langford

SF - McRoberts/Smith/Hunter

PF - Morgan

C - Davis/Thompson/Fitzner

I know i am in the minority here but i really would start Mcroberts or Fitz they compliment Morgan and Romeo alot and they allow more talented players to come off the bench.

Im also pretty sure Green will start.

I believe we'll see Smith shooting jumpers more this season.  He has a good stroke and that would create more space for Morgan or a big to work down low.

Based on Archie's "positionless" basketball ideology and recent trends of small-ball, I think we could start Green, Langford, Hunter, Smith, Morgan.  What we lose in height we gain in speed, possibly.

I could see that.

I mean that lineup would go 6'1, 6'5, 6'7, 6'7, 6'8...not exactly a short lineup.

1)  All due respect to Brass Cannon,  if we have to start McRoberts in any circumstance, I think we're in trouble.   He is not at all a threat to score, and we don't need that liability on the floor with starters' minutes this season.  Love him as a role player off the bench, but he should not be listed anywhere as a starter.  He is still a walk on, after all

2)  I may die on this hill, but I'm remaining firmly in the "Phinisee should start from day 1" camp.  I may also be alone in that tent, but he is a pure point guard and I truly believe at least as good as Yogi was at this age.  Quicker and not as strong, so not really comparable; but he's terrific.  Green to me is a combo guard and still makes too many mistakes to start with a team this talented.

3)  I would love at some point to see Smith get a shot at the "3."   He should be the guy on a rim run on every fast break.

4)  Don't be surprised to see Race Thompson in the mix in the front court.  I haven't heard much (I also haven't asked), but what I DO hear is that he's a strong SOB and tough to move around in the paint.

5)  I am also of the belief that Davis will contribute more this season than many think he will.  Maybe Fitzner can fill the "5" role until he's ready or can play big minutes, but I know plenty of people who have come back to 100% from an achilles tear in less than 9 months.

If I were making decisions, I'd start : Phinisee, Langford, Smith, Morgan, and Davis/Thompson/Fitzner.  Maybe Archie will ask for my input?

No offense but if you think Mcroberts is just a walk on after all then im just going to not read the rest of the post.

About 180 scholarship basketball players in the Big Ten last year. Mcroberts probably easily outplayed 60 of them.

And you dont always play your 5 besr players or do you think the Pacers orgabozation thought that Jeff Foster was better than Al Harrington.

He is a walk on.  That's a fact.   Regardless of how you spin it....that's what he is.   How he plays or the role he plays is irrelevant.  He is a walk on.  You don't start walk on's who can't score if you're competing for a Big Ten title.  I don't care if you read the rest of the post or not...but you did.    I am completely aware of how you build a team and what you put on the floor...I've only coached for 21 years.

Any player in the NBA who starts is an expert at something.  Foster was one of the best post defenders and rebounders in the eastern conference.  He was also a 5.  Harrington was a 3-4, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make with that comparison, but for all McRoberts is; find me a Big Ten champ who consistently started a walk on who can't score.  I said I like him off the bench, and I do; but who does he start in front of?   Smith?  Langford?  Not on any team that thinks it's very good.

Yes to #3 & #4.
Disagree with #1, #2, and #5.

I think everyone disagrees with me on #2.  Maybe #1, too because people (rightfully) fell in love w McRoberts.  Yep...he is a winning player, but on a team with as much talent and athletic ability as this one has, I see him as a far bigger contributor off the bench than I do playing starter's minutes.
