Jeff_Boy_Ardee Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I haven't had a chance to read every comment these last few days, apologies is this is a repeat kind of comment. But, I have not been a Crean supporter, I think he did a tremendous job bringing the program back to a respectable state, but do not think he can bring national championships. That being said, I am not sitting so up on my horse to not admit they did a great job this year. After Maui and Duke they could have folded. I know they had a very very easy schedule but once they banded together they never let up. I also agree losing JBJ was a blessing in disguise. But this season was not a failure. I want to see IU win a title but I also have realistic expectations. People saying we need to be in E8s and S16 every year are being unrealistic imo. Yes that should always be the goal to win and go deep, but to EXPECT that end goal every year is, imo, not realistic for anyone. I see people using Kansas, Duke, UNC, MSU for examples so I wanted to do a quick comparison and also threw in two final four teams this year that are typically expected to be good deep teams: I don't care how big a fan or hater of Crean you are those first 2-3 years are irrelevant when comparing post season. So to make this easier I will just show the last 5 seasons for every program starting with the 11/12 year and moving to this year. KANSAS -runner up -S16 -rd 32 -rd 33 -E8 UNC -E8 -Rd 32 -Rd 32 -S16 -FF so far MSU -S16 -S16 -E8 -FF -Rd 64 SYRACUSE -E8 -FF -Rd 32 -ineligible -FF so far VILLANOVA -didn't make a post season -Rd 64 -Rd 32 -Rd 32 -FF so fAr DUKE -Rd 64 -E8 -Rd 64 -Champs -S 16 INDIANA -S16 -S16 -none -Rd 64 -S16 Now I again am not a Crean fan, but I will give credit where credit is due. Also consider these examples are the last 5 seasons after YEARS of building without the NCAA absolutely destroying your program. Had IU never been sanctioned for violations that aren't even illegal anymore and no where near what two of these aforementioned programs have been caught doing where might we be?? I don't think Crean is the long term answer, but at the current moment I honestly don't know if there is too many options out there that are better. And I don't think you can fire a coach who has made it to that many S16 in the last few years and not expect it to look bad on he program. Example, Crean went to 3 S16 in five years and they canned him if I don't win a title in five years I'm gone. I know a title is the end goal, I want IU to compete top 3-4 in the B10 every year, we should be in the tournament every year. But as much as I hate to admit it, now is not the time to give up on Crean and the Team. Had they not turned it around and finished the way they did this would be a different story, but Crean and the team showed signs of improvement and ability to adapt. I think Tom Crean improved as a coach over the last year or so. I didn't see the momentum-killing hockey substitutions. The confusing defensive switches from early in the year were done away with/simplified. No talk of players being run into the ground during late season practices. If we can lock up some of this 2017 in-state talent then I honestly don't think there will be much left to criticize. The list of coaches I would rather see here instead of Crean has grown considerably smaller. A case of the shrivels, tmi, Boogaloo ALASKA HOOSIER and ElectricBoogaloo 2 Quote

If we add 1 more year then there is another championship too. Are any of the teams in the Final Four currently serving serious NCAA sanctions? Win a title, don't win a title. Let's not act like the entirety of the Crean criticism is just titles. It's an inability to compete at a high level consistently and an inability to compete at an elite level at all. Hoosierfan2017 Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 I really don't think there are any arguments for keeping him at this point. He has shown nothing that indicates he's capable of improving as a coach. Happydaze, ALASKA HOOSIER, hsrtxp and 3 others 6 Quote
JSHoosier Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 So far it looks like he showed one year of good coaching then back to the same old crap. Just like before. At this point he's not going to improve. ALASKA HOOSIER and Defenserocks28 2 Quote

Trish Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 I thought he turned the corner last year. He was calling timeouts, he had decent sets coming out of half time, etc. He even had some decent subs. But.. we have been the same team for the past five years. Same results pretty much as well. Sweet 16 Crean needs to go IF we want a chance at winning a championship. Not many great coaches are available right now sadly.. Josh 1 Quote
