TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Surely there's a point at which CTC himself says enough is enough and the 2 sides get together, negotiate a buyout and CTC announces his resignation. He's got to be painfully aware that he is not a beloved and revered coach and likely never will be. How much stress does he want to continue to place on himself and his family?

This is what confuses me the most. I could never put my family through consecutive seasons of what they are bound to endure. Either they are incredibly strong people or maybe some of the rumors of Crean's haughtiness are true.

Brian Shapiro is his name. I've sat with him a few times when in town, and yes, he has been out on Crean for sometime, I believe the 13-14 year. One game was a home game vs. Illinois IU ended up winning. At the alumni gathering before the game, we walked around and he'd introduce me to people then start bashing Crean, first thing. He screamed the entire second half about getting Vonleh the ball and how stupid Crean was. It got sorta weird from there lol... Can't confirm the donation part because I haven't been out this year but that's definitely a guy who would tell all if he pulled donations

Wow.  In the limited time I've spent with him, this sounds like the same guy.  Great stuff.

The buyout is not as significant as it seems on the surface. The likelihood that Crean actually is fired, and paid all of the buyout, isn't very likely. http://threeriverslaw.com/2015/03/how-to-read-a-contract-or-the-buyout-of-tom-crean/

This view of the buyout from a lawyer's perspective leads me to think even more that Glass has failed at men's basketball just as much as Crean. All of the arrests gave Glass cause to fire Crean or at worst negotiate a lot lower buyout. Plus, renegotiating a longer and higher buyout contract after only a sweet 16 appearance shows his fandom of Crean beyond really evaluating his performance. Last year Glass discussed X's and O's specifically about Crean which is a big no no for administration. This also showed how little he truly knew about the game. Glass' feelings about Crean go way beyond the hardwood. Both need to go.

I've called Glass a fanboy, but more specifically I've called him a Crean fanboy.  Based on this contract it's either that or he got taken behind the woodshed by Crean's agent during the negotiations for the extension when he agreed to that absurd buyout.

Steve Alford had a 10.4 million dollar buyout on his first contract at UCLA after accomplishing... nothing for them.

Buzz Williams gets paid his regular salary for the entire contract if he's fired, making his buyout 18.2 million the first year, 15.4 the second, 12.6 the third, etc. If Crean had the same contract, his buyout would be 16 million right now.

That's all I can think of off-hand. Big buyouts are pretty standard business in limited high-skill positions.

Thanks. Crossed Shapiro's off my list...

why? ...

These limited remarks strike me that he is a jackass.

If I went to an alumni pregame and the "hot shot host" started the event with bad-mouthing the coach, any of our coaches, I'd let him know quickly that's what he was.

it sounds like he is a big supporter of the program and backs it up with his wallet, that sounds good to me. As we have discussed, one can be an IU supporter and not a Tom Crean fan.

One can be a Tom Crean hater and keep it to time and place. Pregame isn't either, imo.

Right.

Right.

I would expect to talk about iu basketball at any iu basketball pregame and unfortunately crean is the main topic so I would expect it guess. Everybody I know that is a iu fan talks about how much crean needs to go that is just how it is
