Why are ppl not sold on Greg Marshall? He's done great things at Winthrop and Wichita state. I think he'd be a home run hire.

A lot of it has to do with his personality and off court demeanor.

He's been coaching just as long as Crean and his post season record isn't much different, aside from his Final Four (which is admittedly more recent than Crean's was when he was hired) he's just got one Sweet 16 appearance; although the tourney can be a crap shoot.  His success has been in smaller conferences too.

I think he's an upgrade without a doubt, in the regular season he's won consistently everywhere.  I'd just put him as more of a solid double.

He looks like Crean and has had pretty much the same results as Crean. It's a hard pass. If we have Greg, I'm turning into a Duke fan or something. Hiring Greg is a lateral move.

Edit: As much as I want Crean gone, I believe the smart thing to do would be to give him one more year so we can see what coaching options are available. I have the vibe that theres not much available

If Celtics cant contend for a championship next year while adding a top 3 pick, Gordon Hayward, and role players.... then just maybe....just maybe will we have a chance.

Honestly though, I think we all know he will be back here next year.

Tournament success at a lower school doesnt show yoi can coach at a power 5 school. Look at Groce and the plethora of other coaches who made 1 run and then fet fored from bigger jobs.

The thing with Marshall is he has made a final four and Sweet 16 as a midmajor but he absolutely dominates his conference filled with similar talent to him. He just gets beat in a dance. Hardly a knock on him.

18 years as a coach and 18 conference titles/conference tournament titles. Only finished outsode the top 2 in his conference a few times as well. Thats a dominating resume. Multiple top 20 defenses and effficient offensive system as well. Guy is a home run.

Really don't think his success would translate well.

Wow you couldnt be more wrong about Marshall.

First, who gives a crap what he looks like? How superficial, shallow does one have to be to use that as a strike?

Second, go look at their resumes. 18 years of championships compared to a couple. Not even close.

Third, they run totally different systems. Marshall coaches championship level defense, while at a midmajor. He also has efficient offenses. Crean only coaches offense.

Not to mention a Sweet 16 to a Mid Major could be the equivelant of final fours to a major program.  I like him because I like the style he plays, he passes the eye test in every game I have watched them play and he constantly is getting the most out of his teams.  Personally, I think you put a guy like that in a major program with major talent and he excels big time.  He is still my number one choice after the dream candidates.

One could argue that with the talent typically available at the mid-major level, he's done very well... and moving to a top school in a top conference, he'd be able to draw the talent commensurate with that level of school/opportunity. My point is simply this: if Marshall has competed as well as well as he has, as the coach of a mid-major, would he not be competitive in the B1G, given the talent and opportunities that IU would afford him?

My only reservation is why none of the other schools in the big 5 conferences have given him a look.

I think Marshall is a definite upgrade over Crean.  His tournament results are the only thing remotely similar, Marshall's regular season record (against schools with similar resources) blows Crean's out of the water; the only thing Marshall has done is win consistently, Crean might win consistently in his dreams and that's about it.

There's a reason I added that the tourney can be a crap shoot.  There's certainly the argument that he was going in with mid-major talent.  I know his regular season record is night and day compared to Crean's.  I actually like Marshall, he'd be on my list to call, I just disagree that he'd be a home run even though I think he's a clear upgrade.

Several posters are very familiar with milehiiu on 247 and this was another post from him last night that I don't think has made it into this thread.

"Everything hinges upon Crean's agent.  And Stevens has already said no to Glass"

I think Frank Martin (SC) has been discussed before, but how about Dana Altman (Oregon) or Billy Kennedy (TAMU)? I would rather first look at a guy from a P5 program that has had success before moving onto mid-major coaching prospects. Of course, Bennett would top that list but I think he turns down IU IMO.

I am sure of the Stevens situation.  We have probably have checked in.  Dude is going to be a top 2 seed, and is going to have the Nets 1st round pick.  Imagine that.  The ability to go after Heyward.  Have a top 2 team in the East, and have potentially the top pick in the draft.  Boston is going to be good for years.

I agree that with all that has been said about Stevens, but if you are Glass, you have to make a public plea to Stevens and make him say publicly that he does not want the job, if nothing else, to settle the fan base or they will be calling for your head and speculating on if Stevens was contacted or not.  Stevens is a pipe dream, and sounds like he has said no, but you have to make that public push and prove to everyone that you tried.  It's the only thing that will get everyone over it at this point.  There has never been a more clear cut #1 choice for any hire as much as this one so you have to make the reason it doesn't happen transparent.

Key word. Mid Major.

Let some other "top" program take a swing at him.

One of the top results when you type his name into Google.

When considering Marshall's post season record you start first with a consistent winner during the season. He regularly gets his team to the postseason. That is probably the biggest difference between him and Crean.

I think he is an obvious upgrade from a consistency basis. Even Creans time at Marquette was inconsistent whereas Marshall has been the opposite

Unless they can realistically lead us to a championship sometime in the future they shouldn't be on the list. I can't see it with Marshall, only made it past the first weekend twice. Said it before, he is just a double not a triple or even a home run. I want a championship, he doesn't get us a championship.
