I've heard a couple different stories about some players absolutely despising him. These were players who didn't transfer either

I'd suspect it had less to due with his character and more his aggressive style of coaching (ridiculous practices and expectations).

End of the day, Indiana needed someone to clean up a huge mess after Sampson, and someone who wouldn't embarrass the program with cheating and poor character. Crean did that. He messed up how he handled the issues with The Movement (Breaking news: college kids drink underage and smoke pot and do a ton of dumb things), but I'll stand by the opinion that his mishandling of those issues was out of love for his players (hence why everyone thought the punishments were weak).

It's an interesting narrative that you've crafted. It seems he's burned bridges due to his aggressive personality and over recruiting, which has lost the trust of the in-state coaches.

Why did Yogi and Cody and JBJ want to play for him?

Yogi and zeller were early on. People caught onto crean after that.

Why does nobody from the state want to play for this man?

Wouldn't that answer be simple because he isnt a good basketball coach. Maybe they feel they would grow as a basketball player under a different coach. I doubt it has anything to do with not playing for him because he isn't a good man. When crean was getting blasted last year after the Duke game Lyle (Ohio st tweeted about how he was like a father figure to him. Although Wilkes went to UCLA he has nothing but good things to say about crean the person.

JBJ?

It's a lot easier to find direct and indirect evidence of people supporting Crean and promoting the idea that he's a good man. You have back channel rumors and your own assumptions. Believe what you want. Crean can be a good man and a bad coach. Not mutually exclusive.

Plus, if Crean's an a$$hole, that sort of goes against your entire argument that Glass loves him and won't fire him. Would make it pretty easy to fire him if he were like Kevin Wilson.

Keep doing you man [emoji108]🏼

I think Crean has a, unique, personality that rubs some people the wrong way. That could be part of the reason for why he's disliked by some people who know him.

The "he's a great man" storyline seems like another excuse for his subpar coaching to me. "So what if he's not a very good coach, he's a great man and a great person to represent our program so we should keep him." I dont know the man personally so I can't judge his character, but there are enough stories out there to make me wonder how true the "he's a great person" angle really is.

I remember the "good guy" comments about Bill Lynch, too. Bill is a heck of a nice guy, and is well-respected as a man... but that does not make him a good coach, neither does it mean that he can/should coach IU Football.

It's the same with Tommy Boy. He may be a swell feller (I've never met him, personally), but he is clearly neither a good coach, nor the man to lead the IU basketball program.

Yeah, Tommy Boy impresses me as the kind of guy that players who don't play for him like. You just named two... I'm sure there are more.

I heard similar "he's a good guy" things about Mike Davis too when I was at IU.  Doesn't matter, that's not really part of the job description.

Although I've heard Crean described as an a**hole on more than one occasion.  By the same person so there is that.

It's probably easy for players to like Crean and say good things about him when they aren't subjected to his 4 hour practices and constant manic energy.

I'd really like to know what Crean has them doing at practice for 4 hours. Obviously nothing to do with defense, inbounding or feeding the post.. The way they play makes me think he just has them standing around doing 3pt drills the entire time.

I don't think anyone is saying Crean being a good guy is a reason for him to stay as our coach, as many are making it out to be. More that him being a good guy gives no one any reason for the personal attacks or stupid (and not even creative or humorous) nicknames. Pretty much everyone agrees that he isn't a good enough coach to get us where everyone wants us to be. The insults are just childish.

Exactly!! This x100000!! He is an awesome person and the insults are annoying. I want a new coach, but I also want to see Crean succeed. Last night people wanting us to lose was crazy just to make his chances higher. If losing to Penn State was gonna do it now than the IPFW at #3 would've done it. I think it is 50/50 he leaves or stays. Glass will have feelers out there and if no one better than Crean wants the job he will stay. At least that is what I hope will happen. I think Crean has brought our program back to being a desirable job and I thank him for that as all you should. This isn't the same IU it used to be just like UCLA and UK and KU aren't the same. We may never get back there, but I hope we do.

I know it's been discussed, but how realistic would our chances be with Tony Bennett? He makes $2.1 million a year at Virginia, and they just upped his salary not long ago. Crean makes $3.5 million here. If we bumped that up to $4 million and offered to double Bennett's salary, would he take it?

Can't say for certain but I don't think so. I have no facts to go on except the overall feel.

You weren't around for the Mike Davis years I take it? Crean has it easy compared to Davis.
