while you need talent you also need luck on your side as well. Nc state wins a national championship on an air ball shot that happened to get dunked by another player under the basket Was that luck or talent?

And I never said luck wasn't a factor, I even gave examples of how luck makes a difference. My comment merely addressed the quotes comment stating one could luck into a National Championship. NC State did not luck into that championship.

I understand the schedule is easy, but at some point we've got to just look at how the team is playing. They're playing like a team, and they've been correcting their weaknesses; both turnovers and defense are much improved. It's getting interesting is all I'm saying.

It is getting interesting. Northwestern this saturday will be interesting. A team worth a damn in our league.

never said they did just they needed a little luck to win. I guess I misunderstood you. One could say Steve Fisher lucked into a championship at Michigan when bill frieder took the Arizona st job in the final week of the season leaving Fisher with a loaded team for the tounament

I thought this should go here.  I know there are a lot of issues with our offense.  We surely have as many if not more traditionalists than many schools.  This is a quote from Bob Huggins on ESPN.com from an interview today.

What's the biggest change in the game over the past 10 or 20 years?

There's more bounce in the ball than there's ever been. Go back to Coach [Henry] Iba, Coach [Bob] Knight and his influences: There was motion -- a lot of passing, lot of cutting, lot of screening. Now you give one guy the ball, ball-screen for him, let him bounce, try to create, kick it to other people. But one guy dominates the ball. Before, it wasn't that way. Before it was more of an onus on recruiting guys that had skill level. Now there's not as much skill level in terms of passing, cutting, the fundamental things. Everything is created off the bounce.

I caught a bit of a junior high basketball practice today and all these kids were running we're pick and rolls. Everyone dribbled the second they caught the ball, and almost every possession resulted in a shot after 1-2 passes. It actually made me sad, I sound old, but these kids have no idea how to actually play real basketball.

The concept isn't an old one, trust me!  It comes down to.....
"let's find a new coach".....Gezz, How many Universities have come to this realization?????

no more difficult than that.  He's not going to be what this fan base wants, so....let's get on with it........

I'm not much into "let's FIND a new coach". If it's not choosing from 1 or 2 specific coaches, I vote you wait until it is.

Otherwise it's likely to be round robin Bruce Almighty, to John  Groce to, to, to....

I don't think beating top teams has been an issue either as over the last 5 years we have been a top 5 team against top 10 teams in wins. It's the late season collapse IMO. This team just feels different. The argument for this team has continually shifted since the Notre Dame game. First it was we will start 2-7. Then 5-2. Then we aren't playing anyone. Let's both hope they keep doing what they are doing.

I think anyone who thought we would have a loss in conference at this point completely underestimated how bad the bottom half of the BIG is right now.

I hope Crean can turn the corner against the Feb/March swoon. Until he actually proves it, I want him fired. He could win 20 in a row vs crap teams and it would mean little to me. A team has to be able to finish a season strong.

So does this mean MSU is considered really bad? I mean they did just lose to two supposed really bad teams that IU beat. Or is Purdue bad since they lost to an Illinois team that Indiana clobbered? Indiana's doing what they need to do and beating the teams they are supposed to do. I have faith they will dismantle northwestern as well. This is the best start IU has had in the b1g since the final four team. At this point, shouldn't we as fans be at least satisfied with the start instead of being Debbie downers on the easy schedule?

No I would say MSU is underachieving. There are no great teams this season. I had IU going undefeated through January this year, even after the Maui losses. I'm thrilled that IU is blowing out inferior competition at home. We haven't played as well on the road though. Wisconsin will be tough.

To me Creans job isn't going to become safe just bc he is on a run bs inferior opponents everyone thought we would beat anyway. His seat will be cool or burning depending on what happens on Feb/March.

Crean has a tremendous opportunity to win the Big Ten this year. Weak schedule, front runners are struggling, and possibly a 2+ game lead of who I think are the serious threats (Maryland,Purdue, MSU) to start Feb. We only play those 3 teams once each and 2 are at home. Iowa is playing well but when I watch them play, I just think they will drop 5-6 games to end the year and be out of it.

Our schedule gets stiff come February. Creans teams usually peak by the end of January. If that trend continues we will fall off and nobody will care about beating the crap teams. If he can keep developing the team, then we can see a Big Ten Championship and Crean is safe for another 3 years. Nobody is going to fire a coach after he wins a conference title twice in 4 years, nor should they. Crean wins the conference and I will be back in his corner. He just has to prove it.

Last year we started the Big Ten season 5-1 with wins over two top 20 teams and two road victories. We set an Indiana record with 18 3pt baskets made in beating Maryland by 19 points. We did not finish the season well.

When we finish a year really well then some Optimus will rightfully build with me.

A lot of valid points in this thread. I'm just happy to see IU WINNING these games.
I'm happy to see them playing as a team.
I'm happy that they are able to pull out victories on the road.

Regardless of the caliber of team we are playing, these are all things we haven't done well in the past. We'll see what we are made of soon enough, until that happens, I'll enjoy watching a team of guys who appear to genuinely like each other dominate their opponents with a big ass grin on their faces while they do it.

Who is this guy?

That's true but if you compare last years team to this years they are completely different. Last year Indiana was playing small ball and relied a lot on shooting. Defense was horrible and when you have Colin Hartman playing the 5 than its gonna be hard to win consistently. Hanner also got hurt but to compare Hanner with TB is light years in difference. This years team has shown it can win even with subpar offensive games and that's why I'm more hopeful this year. I've mentioned it before but this years team is so much well balanced. Barring any serious injuries, I just don't see a downfall in February and March like last years team.

All it took was one SEC East title and a bowl game in consecutive years and we're a bonafide football school.

Hey, we also snagged a DC in whom Auburn had interest. That's football school behavior.

And we had a multi-party argument about our standards in football recruiting. And, I'll bet everyone here can name 5 or 6 more players coming in this year than they could have last year.

Now we just need football traditions, another bowl, and to stop forcing students purchasing basketball student tickets to purchase football tickets and we'll be legit.
