    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Let’s just watch this game knowing we’re most likely to have a new coach next season. Hopefully will have more later. Trying to get some clarification on a good rumor.

    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

From my brief experience as a low-level employee in an SEC Ath department decades ago, most buyouts originate from donors since they typically aren’t considered “salary “ or “compensation” in the sense of belonging in the same lines of a university’s budget. But that’s not ironclad, as Jimbo Fisher’s buyout proves. The raise/buyout info re: Woodson was public record info ever since it was announced a year ago, and as soon as I saw it I thought “Dolson’s trading a smaller total buyout amount on April 1st of 2025 for the opportunity to amortize a larger buyout amount over 8 years OR (given Woodson’s age) another opportunity to renegotiate the new buyout amount down.” Reading what few actual tea leaves seem to be out there at the moment, I get the impression that 1) Dolson wants to move on, 2) Buckner wants to stay put, and 3) Pres Whitten may not yet want to be involved (but may soon have to be nonetheless). I have no idea if Pearl (or, more accurately, Pearl’s agent) is now involved, or if Dusty May’s representatives have been fully engaged, but perhaps things have reached some sort of standoff between the folks who want Woodson retained (Buckner, Cooks, Simons, some former players?) and those who strongly feel a change needs to be made (possibly Dolson, some other donors, some other former players, most of the fanbase?). If that’s where matters are at this point in time, history tells me that some sort of exogenous or “outside” event may have to happen to break the stalemate. It seems to me that the most likely event fitting that description might come from the one group directly embroiled in this that possibly has the least concern about what the BOT and donors think: players on the current roster. If enough rumors are true and a “critical mass” of players plan to leave AND Dolson can convince others of that likelihood, maybe that could break the logjam and persuade Pres Whitten, enough donors, and if not QB himself then enough other Trustees, that the status quo is no longer sustainable, and as a result could possibly force the change that so many of us feel is desperately needed. If such a chain of events led to Bruce Pearl, so be it. If it brought home a “native son” like Dusty May, so be it. If I could talk with either of them for 5 minutes I would say “whatever else you do, hire ASAP someone like Matt Graves on your staff because in-state recruiting is on life support and he can do the CPR necessary to revive it.”

I think the few remaining people Woody had on his side he lost last night. Anyone can see what IU means to Trey, and how hard he works during the game, then you're going to call a timeout to rip him a new one for getting beat once. Then blame him for the loss because he had 6 turnovers. To also say we would be much better off if we had Xavier. We have all watched him play and we wouldn't be that much better. No one will want to get on a sinking ship

Trilly just confirmed the Galloway info I posted here last week (and initially about 3-4 weeks ago). That is why BTB is the goat. I posted that here and you guys took a very relaxed and logical approach - "this sucks, lets see what happens" I posted it at Peegs and immediately - "FRAUD!, NO POSTS, etc" Already canceled by Peegs membership and staying right at home here.

Saw on the other site that Trilly said Dolson met with some notable former players today and their message to him was that they want Woodson gone.

I can 100% say that the job was never offered to Pitino or Oats. I wish we would have spoken to Oats. From what I’m hearing a couple of very big donors are at least open about talking about replacing Woodson this season. Dolson has a very good pulse on who all would be interested. We’ll see.

From what I have heard we have a really good plan going forward. We just need to let Dolson work.

Damn ya'll the Trilly drop is 2 hours old now I figured I show up to tons of comments.. He said he got a text from another guy today who he trusts. He said that this guy must have talked to someone in Pearl's corner and he said that Pearl to IU is very close.

Also--- and you guys brought up the subject of kids--- I watched the game, in the hospital, while I held my not-yet-two-day-old-daugther. She was born Monday morning. Emery Anne And, dont worry--- she won't be saving the ball under our own basket in the 2044 Women's March Madness. On a serious note--- I have a new found respect for my wife. My god. Tough af.

Some people on this board just want to be miserable. He's the 89th ranked player by 247 sports. #90: Committed to Houston #91: Committed to UNC #92: Committed to Villanova #93: Committed to Virginia All 4 of those programs have been much better than Indiana for the last 10+ years. Let's stop acting like Indiana is scraping the bottom of the barrel going after 4 star guys.

Hello fellow Hoosier fans, I think I can speak for most of us when I say Mike Woodson IS Indiana basketball the future is bright. Am I right?

hey y’all, Ricky checkin’ in.. for those of you who don’t know me; do your damn research.. i am the most trustworthy insider in the history of IUMBB. for years, i have predicted some of our most glorious commitments.. Romeo Langford? Ricky called it.. Trayce Jackson-Davis? yep; Rick knew.. now, a smaller number of you may know that i happen to be the team masseuse for this program. i rub the agony of the day’s practice out of each and every one of these young men, and in return they supply me with information.. today, i’m here to speak on Boogie Fland.. as most of you know, Boogie is down to three schools, or so the media believes.. Indiana, Kentucky, and Alabama. Kentucky, one of the sh*ttiest programs in all of Division 1 hoops, is said to have the closest shot alongside the Hoosiers. from what Woody told me this morning at brunch, Boogie’s not interested in making love to any relatives, so Nate Oats and the Tide couldn’t offer him much. on Friday, Boogie Fland will commit to Indiana University, and i will ingest an entire pecan pie in celebratory fashion before my wife gives me some absolute treatment. At this point most players are gone after the season, Not sure we can get guys out of the portal. No one in the class of 25 is going to come to IU with Woodson in limbo for next season. I'm guessing donations will be down, NIL money will be down. There is nothing Woodson can do to save the ship from going down at this point. I can't imagine a change not happening. I haven't heard that yet but I think we're heading that way

The risk of keeping Mike Woodson past this season is far greater than the risk of moving on... IMHO

    A Case for Dusty May

A Case for Dusty May There are no sure things in coaching hires but I think we can approach things with more nuance than hand-waving him into a pile with coaches who’ve had one good March run and flamed out later. (Also I think lots of the coaches being dismissed that way have had pretty good careers if they ended up getting a high-major chance anyway.) In his first HC job, he is the best coach in FAU’s history by many orders of magnitude. Even setting aside weighing last year’s F4 run too heavily, the team’s best ever Torvik finish before May was 184th, back in 2011. May arrived in ‘19 and has been higher than that EVERY YEAR. FAU has been D-1 since ‘93 and he’s the third longest-tenured coach in their history. He already has 115 of their 378 all-time D-1 wins. His career win% is 64.2%, FAU before him was 35.5%. Second, even setting aside the F4 run, last year’s team was 31-3 before the tournament, with strong predictive/performance numbers. They were quite underseeded at 9. Again, at FAU. He’s cruising to an at-large, and they would’ve been so last year…at FAU. That’s not Dayton, or VCU, Gonzaga, or Wichita State, someplace with a strong hoops culture and history. Third, the manner in which his FAU roster last year and this have been built bodes well for his ability to identify and develop players. Boyd, Martin, and Davis are homegrown, and each from a different region of the country. Goldin, Gaffney, and Greenlee were down-transfers from high majors, but none of the three was an established difference maker, and 2 of the 3 had very little college game tape. As far as I can tell those are the only transfers — nothing wrong with TRs but it speaks to his ability to find and build players, not just work with top ### guys. At IU you can get in the door with those guys. If he can build some guys who’ll get NBA looks with what was available to him at FAU, he can win at IU. Occasionally I see folks suggest they’re concerned about his recruiting but that misses how the sausage is made: you are only getting top guys at FAU if you 1) parent them, 2) their parents work there, or 3) some other absurd thing like 1 or 2. If he can compete like this without obvious HS talent, he’ll be fine, and IU has had dudes under every 21st century coach. It’s also noteworthy that he kept the squad together this year. Even after last year’s success, I’m sure there were tantalizing opportunities for many (most?) of his roster. I think that level of buy-in and relationship scales up. They tend to spread minutes around, too, which isn’t always the answer but suggests mutual trust. This isn’t just a couple diamond-in-the-rough studs. I’m sure we all figured they’d be pretty good this year, but I’ve been impressed that they’ve actually met or outperformed computer projections, which thought they’d be good but could be more “bubble team” than top 25. I would rather win ugly than lose pretty, but FAU plays modern, attractive hoops and competes on defense. By % of minutes played their top 5 most-used players this year are wings or guards. They play one true big about 90% of the time…and the 10% that’s not true are minutes with no big or a hybrid forward at the 5, not plodding two big lineups. They’ve been well-rounded on both sides of the ball, i.e. their success isn’t JUST dependent on dominating the turnover battle or strong shooting or something else that’s gonna graduate with one particular class. Finally, I love his quiet confidence. He thought he could stay and win at FAU. People know he wants the IU job, even though he knows what expectations that means. Arrogance gets in the way of self-improvement, but to win at a high level some confidence is a must. I hope to watch the track record get longer, but what’s there is already really impressive, and makes me think he could jump somewhere like Louisville, Michigan, etc. and succeed quickly and for awhile. Let’s hope he does so at IU eventually. (Cc @DLG3)

I look at it from the opposite direction. I don't think that Dolson, Whitten, or top donors follow this board or Rabjohns (though certainly some have read along at times). However; Rabjohns needs access and information from the administration and coaching staff. When Rabby puts all of his chips in on a litany of problems with Woody, to me that's a reasonable indication that Rabby thinks he can do so without losing his access from next year's head coach. In other words, Rabjohns clearly believes that pissing off Mike Woodson will be a moot point that will not be detrimental to him.

I think the plan is talk to coach A, B, C to try to swing big, if we don't get one of those then we have option D that we know will take the job. IMO all options are better than Woodson. But one of these has to be a done deal before anything will happen here.

Also family members of players are starting to let people in charge know that they are tired of their kids being called out in public to the media. It's one thing to do it behind closed doors but it's another to tell the media the kid played awful. Woody won't talk about himself being awful this year or take any accountability at all for this horrible roster, or the coaching this season. I think that will make kids enter the portal too if he is retained.

I'm usually one of the last ones to say fire a coach because I know what it does to the families of assistants, staff, and players, everyone is affected. It has happened to my wife as a player, it happened to my FIL as an athletic trainer. It's sometimes life-changing things and it's very hard to move on. It's not as easy as just packing up and moving to another town for a new job. That being said I could tell early on that this wasn't a job for Woody. I love the guy, he's awesome to talk to and hang out with but he is-was already semi-retired and this job needs much more than that. My son will probably play golf with Woody & Buckner as soon as the season is over. Which I love because they are helping a young black IU student feel comfortable at IU. But this job is way over his head. And the longer it goes the worse it's going to be. I also love IU and just want what's best for this school. Sorry for the ramble.
