  6. The flip side of that is 8 (4 on the road to top 12 teams )of the 10 losses are to top 30 NET. For a bottom of the bracket seeded team that’s tough. Wouldn’t have that many losses otherwise if they were able to play some of the teams Acc and big east teams get to play in their conference. Not many get right right games. IU is 10-10 in meaningful games. Q1-Q3. IU was never going to be a top of the bracket seeded team in my opinion this year and only a top seeded team would have more wins against that top 25 schedule. Is what it is. They are a flawed bottom of the bracket seeded team that has results that back that up.

  7. Agree. I'd add "fund-raising" to the recruiting concern, since they are so closely connected now. He doesn't have that super charismatic personality. He doesn't have decades-long personal relationships with key donors like Woodson did. So he needs to win to get everyone on board. Making the tourney this year is an important first step.

  9. UCLA lost by 30 and 23 in the 2 games before they won last night. They might of leapfrogged IU however I don’t they did just yet. Their 2 best wins are at home over Purdue and Illinois. Massive 2 wins however IU has wins over Purdue as well and Wisky home to go along with a road win at UCLA. IU has 3 wins against the projected field while ucla only has 2 wins both at home against the projected field. Ius Sos is better as well. It’s close but in my opinion I have IU ahead of UCLA. I got both well ahead of OSU

  10. Maybe CBS replaced Bowl Cut with a Michigan grad that wants Diebler to have a lifetime contract.

  11. Quacktastic victory! Way to show some true fourth-quarter grit! Nice to see some different BTBers here. I was tired of chatting with myself during women's games!

  12. The older woman ref with the red hair should not be out there. She has no idea what she’s doing and would be catching a rash in a middle school rec league game, never mind a B1G game.

  14. Interesting. Others have it different. It sure who is going CBSs this year but Palm who has done it in the past had been one of the worst to ever do it

  15. TBF, I think lots of us thought it was pretty smart scheduling before the season started. KSU isn’t ever likely to be great but typically solid enough. And Marquette is on a historically bad run that couldn't be predicted; they’re usually guaranteed to be somewhere from an 8seed to 3 seed type of team. Heck, even the Baylor exhibition, which doesn’t factor into anything, gave us false hope as they are historically bad. UK is down a bit and Lville isn’t as good as maybe thought. The one thing I will say was that if we ever get back to being an actual good program, I do like the mid February out of conference game like Michigan just played.

  17. The starting point problem here is the assumption DeVries’ recruiting after his late hire with 0 staff was strategic. IU had just once again missed the tournament, had 8 years of mediocre results, had 0 returning players, players recruited to Woodson’s failed front-court non-outside shooting teams, zero staff. That’s the opposite of hitting the ground running. If we make the tourney (I think we will), which is step 1 on this obvious complete rebuild, he’ll have a year of budding success grounded in high output 3-point shooting/ guard play and a staff in place and returning players to add pieces to in a system already in place. This offseason (and next) is very important but no reason to tie it conceptually to last year, as if DeVries would go chasing mid-tier players. He’ll chase the best with more time to get them. He knows we’re undersized for the B1G, he knows we need more athletic forwards. He landed Wilkerson and beat UK to get him, that’s the kind of guard he wants, who he’ll pursue and how many forwards remains to be seen but what he was able to do starting with nothing is not somehow the model

  21. He coached for almost half a century. Syracuse isn’t a blue blood because of it but they’re in the mix for the second rate programs. 5 FFs over 40 years is one every eight. Up until a few years ago Izzo averaged one every four. Before he fell off so did Knight (plus 3 titles). K averaged better than one FF per four years. So did Roy Williams. Calhoun was one FF per five-ish years but won 3 titles. Boheim isn’t one of the greats by any measure. Flawed system. I’d rather IU keep rolling the dice than babysit a good, but not great, coach who might win a title in 2056. No thanks.

  23. Thanks a lot, Quinn Buckner and Mike Woodson. Too painful to imagine the alternate universe where we have Cignetti and Dusty at the same time. Couldn't have both. We'd be too powerful.

  24. To add to this keep an eye on Marquette. The are at 108 in the NET and if they go on a little run and get to 100 then that neutral court win becomes a Q2 win as well.

  30. Both cases are getting IU in the tourney. Having the extra road win would give them them the better seed. Minny is currently 73rd and if they won a road game at IU then their NET is going to go up. Minny loss would be a Q2 home loss. Although if you lose to Minny you get swept by a non tourney team so they could hold that against you.

  33. Maybe he's seeing/learning the TD role he could be filling next year, with more size and athleticism. Can't wait to see the improvement from this kid, with a full year under his belt. I really believe he can be a major contributor next year. Hope he believes this too.

  39. I put it in the PU game thread but the one question I have of May is his love of pace. Scheyer was smart to slow them down. That’s not to say May can’t be really successful. Roy Williams was and all he ever did was try and run the other team off the floor.

  43. Head coaches don't build rosters. Assistants do. They have national and now international connections that bubble up names and they go see see them. The come up with a dozen or so names in each class starting when they're incoming freshmen. They start working them it depends on the culture of whomever they're working for on who the put the most time into. DD hadn't been working players for damn near a decade and he thought he had Murphy and Moikobu coming in to build a roster for him that reflected their prowess. Rod Clark was prayer answered but too late to do anything about the 26' team. Kenny and Drew have temp contracts. 2 years each. I have to believe it's because they're were emergency filler and will be replaced. Geoff Alexander and Chin Coleman would immediately change our talent level. Along with Rod Clark, that's a serious staff. All of this will come down to money though. I believe in DD more now than i did when we hired him. He can coach an offense that can hang a banner. He needs talent acquisition specialists.

  44. It's an interesting thing. In terms of basketball coaching, I think he's gotten more out of less. Not a great deal more, but IMO more out of less. That's meaning what he's done with this roster. In terms of the building of the roster and the money spent, we did not get the bang for our buck. Spending $10-$11M should have gotten us a legit power 5 big and point guard. That's why my big concern remains recruiting, not the actual coaching.

  45. Yes. Exactly. It was 10-11 million by most reports. Lamar was near 2.5. Bailey was near 1.5. Maybe Tuck was near 2, I’m not sure on him. 750 for Conerway. On and on. About 10-11 total. Which puts us around 10-25 most in the country. Which should be a relative scale to where expectations can fairly lie. I think we got outspent by a lot of teams that we didn’t expect to pony up. I think we thought 10 million would put us around 10th but in reality we ended up closer to 20th. We should have built a top 25 roster. That’s the goal when you spend that level of money. Otherwise it’s a relative failure. Then getting results is the next step. Get more out of less or less out of more is the big coaching evaluation. Jury is out on DeVries both on roster building and team improvement.
