(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS

Recommended Posts

NEW ALBANY — On a night in which third-ranked New Albany came out of the gate slowly on offense, the Bulldogs rode their defensive prowess until their offense kicked into high gear in a 76-33 blowout of Hoosier Hills Conference opponent Seymour on Friday at the Doghouse.

The Bulldogs started the contest 0-of-11 from beyond the arc. When senior guard Romeo Langford knocked one down from the right side inside the first minute of the second half, it led to a 7-of-11 shooting effort after intermission from 3-point range.

New Albany, which is 5-1 overall after its first HHC win, dominated on the boards with a 33-17 advantage and in turnover margin, where it outpaced the 2-2 Owls 22-6.

With those kind of statistics, it almost renders perimeter shooting irrelevant.

"I thought, all-in-all, we played pretty well," New Albany coach Jim Shannon said. "When you double the score up on someone, you can't really come away thinking you didn't play well. We didn't shoot the ball well to start with, but sometimes you can't control that. What you can do is control your effort on the defensive end and I think we did that pretty well."

After a quiet first quarter after which New Albany led 8-5, the Bulldogs kicked into high gear early in the second frame.

Langford got his first field goal of the contest at the 7-minute mark with a baseline jumper that gave New Albany a 11-7 lead. That basket sparked a 11-0 run, which was capped with a putback from Trey Hourigan to give the Bulldogs a 20-7 lead with 4:34 remaining in the first half.

Sean East closed the first half with consecutive steals and baskets inside the final 20 seconds and New Albany led at intermission 31-17.

The Bulldogs saved their best for the final quarter. They opened the fourth with a 16-0 run that included a windmill dunk by Langford, an alley-oop from East to Julien Hunter and two other dunks from Hunter. The Bulldogs outscored the Owls 21-4 in the fourth quarter.

Langford, the 6-foot-5 All-American candidate and prohibitive favorite for Mr. Basketball, finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds. His two free throws at the 3:39 mark of the first quarter pushed him past former Austin standout Anthony Winchester for 14th place on the state's all-time leading scorer list.

East added 10 points, as did reserve guard Darin Starks in the win.

Shannon said after last week's overtime loss to Floyd Central, it was important for the Bulldogs to play well to earn their first conference win.

"There are some really darned good teams in this conference. Floyd Central is good. Jeff is good," Shannon said. "We can't afford to slip up at this point. We didn't want to take Seymour lightly."

The Bulldogs head north tonight to face No. 18 Carmel. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

CARMEL — For a second Saturday in a row, the New Albany Bulldogs made the long bus ride to the Indy area worth it with a victory against one of the state’s top programs.

But the locale of the game was about all that last week’s win against Fort Wayne North and this week’s conquest over Carmel had in common.

A week after Romeo Langford exploded for 42 points in downing the runners-up in 4A from a season ago in a 97-59 thrashing, Langford was held to a much more pedestrian 19 in a 59-48 grinder of a win at Carmel.

In this one, it was a combination of the role players stepping up to get the job done for Jim Shannon’s ballclub, not to mention an outstanding defensive effort to help get a quality of road win that wasn’t lost on Shannon post-game.

“It’s huge. This place is tough,” Shannon stated after his team’s sixth win of the season and third in four tries against a Carmel program that has won 20 or more games in five of the last seven seasons. “We’ve been as good as the top teams in the state over these last four years in large part due to Romeo.”

That’s certainly a big reason why there was such a crowd at Carmel on Saturday night. It was a mixture of Bulldog fans that made the trip from New Albany, Carmel fans there to support their team, and of course, the rest were made up of Indiana fans, thrilled with the Hoosiers’ overtime win over Notre Dame just a couple of hours earlier and a few miles away at Bankers’ Life Fieldhouse.

They certainly weren’t disappointed in what they saw from Langford, but Carmel kept within striking distance of the Bulldogs because of the defensive efforts of Jalen Whack. The senior guard for the Greyhounds was playing in just his third game of the season due to an injury but put forth a tremendous defensive effort against one of the state’s all-time great scorers.

In fact, Saturday night’s game was the rare game where Langford didn’t pass anybody on the IHSAA’s all-time scoring list. He finishes the weekend in 14th place on the state’s scoring list after passing Austin’s Anthony Winchester in Friday’s 76-33 trouncing of Seymour.

Langford will enter next Friday’s home game against Pike 17 points away from passing Morristown’s Brady Adkins for 13th in Indiana history in terms of points scored.

Langford would finish 7-of-18 from the floor in the win and connected on just 2-of-11 from 3-point range.

The shooting numbers were much better for Romeo from two-point territory, where he was 5-of-7. The same can be said for those role players, Julien Hunter and Trey Hourigan, both sophomores who are gaining in experience by the game.

“They were awesome,” Shannon said. “They’re just sophomores and they’re out there playing on one of the best teams in the state. They’re trying to figure it out, trying to do what we want them to do, without getting in Romeo’s way. That’s not easy.”

Hourigan made both of his field goal attempts on the night — one on a putback and the other a key 3 early in the fourth quarter that gave the lead back to the Bulldogs at 38-37 after Carmel had scored the first points of the quarter to take their first lead since the early stages of the second quarter.

Hunter, who entered the weekend shooting a remarkable 80 percent from the floor, did just that in the victory against Carmel. Hunter collected eight boards and made four of his five attempts from the field, all coming from point-blank range.

And something that every Bulldog player did Saturday was connect from the line. Hourigan was the only New Albany player to miss a free throw on the night, missing 2-of-4 tries in the first half. For the game, New Albany connected on 22-of-24 opportunities from the line. The Bulldogs didn’t miss a single attempt in the second half, which helped keep Carmel at bay as the New Albany lead grew as the fourth quarter wound down.

From the Carmel perspective, the game largely revolved around whether or not junior 6-foot-10 center John Michael Mulloy was on the floor. The Butler verbal commit picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter and sat for a large chunk of the half. Carmel took an 11-8 lead into the second quarter, but a combination of Mulloy’s absence and New Albany switching their defense to a 1-3-1 zone kept Carmel off the board for the first 5 minutes and 40 seconds of the second quarter.

However, Carmel head coach Ryan Osborn inserted Mulloy back in the lineup late in the half, and after New Albany had scored 13 straight to push the lead to 21-11, the Greyhounds scored the last seven points of the stanza to reduce the halftime lead for the Bulldogs to three.

Mulloy continued to impress in the second half, scoring all 11 of his points after the break. The Greyhounds tied it twice by the end of the quarter, and the two teams went to the final period tied at 35-all.

But Mulloy picked up his fourth foul just past the 6-minute mark left to go in the contest, and given the results with Mulloy on the bench earlier, Osborn left his center in the game. Just a couple of minutes later, Langford drew a charge that sent Mulloy to the bench for the rest of the night. For all intents and purposes, that ended Carmel’s chances of knocking off a second ranked opponent in as many nights following the Friday’s win over North Central.

Sean East was his typical solid self for the Bulldogs with 18 points, including making all 10 free throws he tried, with eight of those coming down the stretch. Just six Bulldogs played with all breaking into the scoring column.

New Albany will play one more time before the Christmas holiday. The Bulldogs will play another Indianapolis-area powerhouse, but this time on home soil, which Pike (1-3) visits New Albany on Friday night.

Yeah. But when Alpha and his Apostles hit campus all he'll need to do is roll the ball out about 40 times or so and they''ll be Final Four-bound.

No way. At this point I feel even with those three they would be barely a tournament team. They would have one lottery player. One upside 5* much like Vonleh was here. Then at least a two year point guard. Every team they play can double those three players and you will win. I could see them being much more like LSU with Simmons. IMO best NBA prospect since Lebron couldn’t even get his team to the tournament with a couple 5*. You have to have talent around you in college. 3 18 year old Freshman no matter how good can’t do it alone.
