I would consider 3-star a ranking. I would also consider transfers to be different. It's the difference between hiring someone without experience based on their transcript and hiring someone based on their tangible work product from a few years experience.

And I'm not ragging on the kid. I hope he does great. Just putting it into perspective and looking for some points of comparison.

It's not even a dig on Crean. Some coaches are big developers (Bo Ryan is the prime example) while some excel at managing talent (can't say Coach Cal isn't amazing at this). Most are somewhere in between. Hard facts about what has happened in the past helps fans evaluate where their coach is on the spectrum.

This might just be because he's not a very sought out prospect, but one thing I do like is how grateful he is.  It's a blessing that he has the opportunity to play for Indiana, rather than it being a blessing for Indiana to have him.  He has made that very clear.  Attitude = check!

Someone really needs to help me understand the negativity.   This is a kid who :

 

- Absolutely knows how to play the game.  Listen to him talk about basketball, watch how he plays on both ends....This is an "Indiana kid."

- Can flat out shoot the ball at a high percentage with range, and takes pride in it

- Is 6'5"

- Understands angles and anticipation

- Wants to be at Indiana

- Understands what it means to wear the candy stripes.   To many kids, Assembly Hall is just a building.  To him, the Taj Majal

 

So what if he didn't have an early high school career that led to his being highly ranked as a 15 year old kid?  He hasn't played his senior season yet, and he had - by all measures I've read - a terrific summer.   I don't get the negativity at all.   To me, this is a very positive step for Crean, and I actually think he's doing something which his program desperately needs.

 

Know who else was a relative unknown, skinny, off the radar high school junior?   Brian Evans.  All he did was end up Big Ten player of the year as a senior.    We can't judge this kid for at least 3 years, and he's only part of a class.  I simply don't get why some are so quick to throw this kid under the bus because the "experts" haven't put him on the main screen of the radar yet.  It's not as though this is the only kid we're going to get in this class, or that he'll prevent others from being part of it.    He's a piece.  A piece we need and a piece who "gets it."   There's no guarantee a more highly ranked player would out perform him or help win more games.   "The Movement" was one of the most highly ranked classes in the country.  How'd that turn out?

I honestly like the pickup. We will need him and we are delusional to think that we are filling these 4-6 spots with most of the kids we seem to think we are getting. Going to be a lot of broken hearts by the time this class rounds out. I learned my lesson from the 2014 class.

Agree with Stu. Just a lot of realistic reactions to an underwhelming commitment in a class full of studs, both in and out of state.

I also agree with you. One of Crean's recruiting issues has been balancing classes. Gelon appears, in my very early observations, to be a four year player. You need some of those in every class.

So to change the pace a little bit here.. I was mapping out Crown Points schedule next year. And I live in the Lafayette area, and GG & Crown Point play at Lafayette Jeff on 11/25. I think I'm going to go check our boy out!! See if I can't get a good look at his skill set and see how much he's grown from now until then.

depends what scouting service you follow rivals didn't have him in their top 100. There was a reason that the kansas vs whicita st game was heated. He committed to whicita st early and then blew up late in his senior year. Kansas offered late and tried to get him to decommit. Kansas never scheduleing them added fuel to fire as well
