That's a peculiar situation that would induce teams teams to be working the portal while they are potentially still playing, but it sounds like something the NCAA would do. go iu bb 1 Quote

go iu bb Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 National Letter of Intent is being removed. It was basically worthless anyways since recruits are pretty much always released from it if they change their minds. There have been rare times when a coach/school wouldn't release a recruit from their NLI but they would get shredded in the court of public opinion each time and back eventually back release him so all they did was hurt themselves. Without this formal step of signing and then requesting a release, I wonder if other sports recruitment will become more like football where a "commitment" is more a sign of the current leader rather than an actual commitment. This is a swimming article but I'm pretty sure this applies to all sports: https://swimswam.com/ncaa-removing-national-letter-of-intent-nli-program/ Speaking of swimming, IU has very good teams pretty much every year and this year the men have a legit chance at winning the national championship. I wonder if Rhode Island will pull the plug after this season, or if they still have the outdated belief that you have to give a coach 4 years to prove he's no good. But this is also his third season, which means it should be the year the players finally grasp how to play the pack-line defense (tic). So maybe they'll be mediocre instead of awful. Quote

Home Jersey Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 I’m officially ready for basketball season to start. Hopefully the season has some overlap with football this year. Being aware of recruiting news is nice but I can’t care too much about every new “development” on that front given nobody really knows what’s going on and rosters turn over so much every year now. I care about the guys we DO get, and couldn’t care less about the ones we don’t. With the portal and our NIL, we can field a competitive team each year regardless of any given HS recruit. I’m cautiously optimistic about this season and am ready to see the team in action. I hope they surpass our expectations. Joe_hoopsier, J34, Stuhoo and 1 other 4 Quote

I’m sure unofficially it is being dealt with all the time. But making the official window 30 days half of which backs right up into the time when teams are playing is a different kind of crazy. They could easily do it in late May or even after the semester when people would know if they were graduating or transferring or whatever. Maybe that conflicts with something else, I don’t know. go iu bb 1 Quote

Dybantsa is a #1 overall-type kid, easily, but there is no way in a college setting with a format like the NCAA tournament that any player is worth that kind of jack. Not even close.
