Maybe it's a generational thing, but announcers like Vitale and now Johnson become over the top parodys of themselves as fame and popularity increases. I want announcers who can call a game with insight without being the show themselves. My opinion only and your mileage may vary.

If Vitale is attached to a generation, it’s the George Mikan Branch McCracken generation. (Cause he’s really old and such)

Announcers have been part of the show since time began. Johnny Most on play by play was over the top in a way that would make Gus look mild.

I know. I, as a kid, used to listen to baseball broadcasts on the radio. I've heard my share of "colorful" broadcasters. Not my cup of tea. That's one of the reasons I have enjoyed Don Fischer so much during his time doing IU games. To me, that's how it should be done.

I fell in love with GJ's call when Oladipo hit that half court shot. To me, yes he is over the top but in a way I still enjoy. He just seems to have a natural enthusiasm that isn't forced which makes it bearable to me. I get why others are put off by it though.

Because of their roles, I view those guys and what I want from them very differently. I’ve never liked Vitale because his analysis has always been really rudimentary. And not because he’s simplifying things  for casual fans. Bilas is great at that. Dakich used to be. Vitale’s just never been very astute in the moment. Fascinating that he was a former college HC. Most of those guys miss nothing. And his enthusiasm may be genuine, but it also seems to gloss over a lack of prep. Johnson as a play by play guy is a different deal for me. Maybe his energy feels artificial to some. To me it feels like a guy who loves what he’s watching and to me it feels completely genuine. There are plenty of great ones with different styles, but as long as they can convey that they love what they’re watching and a sense of the moment, then I’m good with them.

I agree with a lot of this. Personal taste has a lot to do with it. I really liked Johnson a few years ago, but as his popularity has increased he seems to have amped up his shtick. I'm sure there are network people telling him to do that. Same thing with Dakich. When he first started, I enjoyed listening to him. Then, he became an over the top parody of himself. Don't listen anymore. I like Gus personally, just don't care for the persona as much.

I love Gus’s enthusiasm and passion. He may be a bit “theatrical” but he sticks to the game and doesn’t talk about himself or endlessly blab about his favorite coaches (like Vitale does). Not to mention…..Gus calls the Hall the Carnegie Hall of Basketball which will always make him ok in my mind.

Walton? Back in the day I would have said (I mean… a friend of mine would say) Bill would be a blast to hit a bong with but having him announce a basketball game these days??? No thanks. It wouldn’t bother me if I never again heard him express his love for the PAC 12, Grateful Dead, Wooden or his bike during a basketball game.

That’s interesting to hear. For some reason I don’t remember him announcing back then. 

I’ll never forget the game a couple of years or so ago when he interviewed his buddy Bruce Hornsby, on a split screen, for 20 minutes during an IU game. Couldn’t believe it and was also surprised the network let it go on for so long.  Kind of funny now but I was pissed during the game.

As someone said earlier, these guys get older and become paradies of themselves, etc., but Walton used to be good on the analysis side.

I'm just ready for primetime NBC college basketball. That'll be awesome.

My main problem with Gus is that he’s an unprofessional d-bag. If you’re not one of the big boys, he blows you off and doesn’t prepare for you like he does the other team. He then hides that lack of prep with his enthusiasm which leads to my secondary problem: his excited voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me and it comes off really artificial. Again, just my opinion obviously but I can’t stand him lol.

Gus used to be great... Back when his excitement was more authentic... Commentators definitely aren't as good as they used to be I feel. It is nice though when you get an old coach or player that's ready to really talk about the game and details in the game... Just not many of those anymore. They are almost there to be a separate show of entertainment instead of being a part of the game.

Shawn Morris is a great analyst on BTN. Hasn't been around much. I think his day job interferes. I saw and spoke with him at the OSU game in B-town in 2020-2021(?). Nice guy.

I actually liked Dakich for the most part. He'd actually explain at times parts of the game and why things were done. Then you get almost the opposite with Bilas who just wants to fanboy over a couple dudes, Duke, Kentucky and Michigan State and complain about how players have no rights.

He did one of our tournament games in 92 and he did NBA games for NBC
