Not to throw more gas on the fire, but Gelon wasn't even the best player on his HS team.   It's unfortunate for everyone concerned but it will be old news within a week.   I applaud Archie's openness and candor with Gelon.  And just how in the world did Gelon ever think he deserved more playing time?   If he didn't get more playing time from the coach who recruited him, what could possibly make him think a new coach would view him any differently?  I think his transfer to State Fair Community College tells us all we need to know.

I grew up in The Region and initially, was excited to see that Gelon was gonna be a Hoosier. But it became pretty clear he just didn't have the skill set to be a B1G player. Crean reached just a little too far on this one. Yes, he found some good under-the-radar talent in guys like Oladipo and Sheehey, but when he took flyers on those guys, we were still working our way back into national prominence after a couple really dark years. And they had abilities that Gelon just doesn't. He offered Gelon at a time when really, we needed to be aiming higher. I have a feeling that despite what his coach said, the D-1 options are few and far between. I hope he does well, but it just seemed that clearly, he was not a Power 5-conference type player.

The quotes from his parents don't sound good, but I wouldn't really expect them to.  The quotes from Campbell made IU sound better.  As always there are two sides to every story, and the truth is usually somewhere in between.

I imagine there are plenty of times when a player transfers from a program and feels they were misled or not supported.

Big difference too though is that VO and Sheehey were top 150 guys, so while not 5* or 4* they were still nationally ranked recruits so I wouldn't exactly call them "flyers". Gelon is more in the Priller, April, Zeisloft, etc. group.

I always thought Crean offered Gelon because some fans insisted on getting a kid from Indiana.  When Gelon signed, those fans cheered an Indiana player that would help us out simply because he's from the state.

Turns out he just wasn't very good.  But because he had many many people telling him he was a better player than other kids from out of state, his head got big.  This is what worries me about Indiana high school players.  Some fans are convinced that they must be so much better than kids from other states, that it gets into these kids heads.  I don't like that culture and I'm not surprised that this Gelon experiment turned into a mess.

This isn't just an Indiana high school problem.   I'm sure there are plenty of players out of state with people in their ear that they are better then they really are.  I'm sure every state school deals with this when they recruit in state kids.  There will always be people on both sides of the argument.  If u go to Illinois, Missouri, Michigan boards u will see the same argument when it comes to recruiting instate kids.   Just like with nationally recruited kids some work out and others dont.   Nature of the business of recruiting

Absolutely.  It happens everywhere, but I don't think it's to the level of Indiana fans.

I think it might seem that way because you are an Indiana fan and interact with other Indiana fans on this topic on an Indiana message board.   I agree IU fans are on another level then the fans I mentioned but I would say IU fans are on the same level as other hot bed recruiting areas (New York, California, DC area) in wanting to keep the talent locally at their respected in state schools

Maybe so, but I haven't lived in Indiana in 13 years.  So while I may spend time on this board, most sports conversations come to me from very different fanbases on a daily basis.

I understand wanting to keep talent local.  But I've never heard other fanbases say that their high school players are better than somewhere else's simply because they're local.  It's a faction I don't see most other places.   That's all I'm saying.

That's U nderstandable. I would say most of it comes from articles breaking down Indiana as being a hotbed for recruiting talent and graphs that show the amount of D1 players that come from a smaller area compared to other areas nationally.  And I'm sure others are just loyal to their loca kids blindly regardless of what facts say.  I've interacted with plenty of other fan bases that blindly think there high school players are better just because if where they came from.   The New York area for example think they are the capital of elite point guards

Interesting approach that he is wanting to take. Wonder why he would want to skip the season?

Because he won't get a waiver to be able to play at a different school this year. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't just signed with an overseas team at this point. Might as well make a few hundred k and play against grown men than practice at Kansas for a year.

Could hurt his stock. Not worth it

This all goes on Crean for even offering a mid tier kid on their HS team. He had a few good weekends in AAU basketball and that's it. Crean fell in love, rest is history.

It was clearly obvious before he even signed that he wasn't B1G material, let alone D1 material. The fact that he thought he should've gotten more PT is a joke. Hell, Crean knew deep down that he had made a mistake of having Grant on the books for the next four years.

Miller did the right thing by being honest. There's simply no need for him on the roster. I know it's hard to turn down an offer from IU when your other offers are crap compared to us, but at some point he had to at least question himself on whether or not he could do this.

Wish him luck in the future, I figured he'd be at Grace College by now anyways, guess he couldn't even find room there.
