(2014) PF Emmit Holt to IU

Recommended Posts

I am just saying right now ..Holt is the real deal...and will compete for a spot ...he looks really good for his initial start...Devin and HMP will have to be on their game...this just what we needed!

This really concerns me for HMP, as he's been here for 3 yrs now. Not as much concerned for DD. It's bitter sweet, so glad to hear about Holt however

Don't take this the wrong way ..it will push everyone to work harder

In the gym

Not trying to sound doubtful but how much have you seen him play with the team? I presume that is the basis of the claim. It would be good if he can push in practice and give us perhaps 10-15 mins a game. Great for anything over that.

True. But you have to really take with a grain of salt what fans say on a forum about a player. I'm sure a lot of people in the DC area would have said the same things about Oladipo. Not saying Holt will be half of what Vic was, but most of what I read about players I mostly disregard until I see them in college. It goes both ways. Hanner was called an athletic freak and had some of the highest praise from people in Northern Indiana. That certainly hasn't panned out on the court as of yet.

It seemed a few of the posters had seen him play live and others knew him personally. So, they couldn't have overlooked it too much.

I don't disagree that high school performance isn't directly correlated to college performance. Just that people here seemed to really be playing up these forum posts like we stole one out from under SU's nose when they don't indicate that at all.

I think Holt is a great pick-up and I'm excited to see him play, but I don't think that we're going to find other high-major program's fans talking about how they'd wished he was being recruited for their team.

As happy I am about getting Holt, I don't think he is going come in like a top 50 recruit. We needed him with our current state of recruiting momentum, but I'm not going to get all giddy like we just landed Devin Robinson. Holt appears to be a good get, just hope we can just get back to landing the top recruits in the land.

To all the doubters....the people in the know --many who have commented publicly--are abuzz about Holt. He is not your normal 3 star and you don't see these same people abuzz about other 3 stars like they are about Holt. While I agree he has to prove it on the court and it may take a year or two--I am confident he will. He is not chopped liver---he is the runner up for Mr. Basketball in the State of New York and he just finished dominating AAU ball with and against other high level D1 recruits. Basketball 4iU had the courage to bring us an in-person update from practice confirming the same. Sometimes when EVERYBODY is saying the same thing----it's because it's the TRUTH.

I am optimistic about Holt eventually being a solid contributor and I agree with you stating he has to prove it on the court. Ever since TC used Jobe & NBA in the same sentence before anyone had the opportunity to see Jobe play, I like to wait until I see the player prove it on the court. Fellow players and coaches at times act as if they are another player's PR person and over-hype an individual.

Crean NEVER used Jobe and NBA in the same thought or sentence.

I believe he made a reference to Guy Marc Michel and the NBA, which was kinda silly too.

He also said Derek Elston would've been in the NBA if he was healthy.

I think that GMM, had he been given the chance, could have made a roster in the NBA or at least the D League. He went straight to Europe without any collegiate coaching or conditioning. I think the book would have ended a lot differently on that kid had he been allowed to play.

I'm not sure where all of this is going. Is this is to make a point Crean has no idea what it takes to play in the NBA or he's delusional? If so, yes Crean is delusional if he thought DE could play in the NBA. What more can be squeezed out of it? We are picking at crumbs here.

With Crean's enthusiasm and optimism (which is contagious and not necessarily a bad thing) he probably meant it when he said it! There are people in the NBA that I look at and think----how did they make it to the pros----and then people that I think should make it that don't.  There is some subjectivity to it. Plus Crean's success at spotting and then developing talent (yes doubters it has occurred) sometimes seems to make him think he can get anyone to the next level.  Sometimes I think he sees the NBA potential and they come but they get hurt or don't work hard or are not coachable ,etc. Sometimes he is also just wrong. Same thing happens at Carolina, UK, Duke, KU, etc. Not everyone makes it. Personally, I don't worry about who turns into a great NBA player--I am more interested in who turns into a great college player. NBA basketball is so boring until playoff time and cannot hold a candle to the passion and excitement of college hoops!

The other option is he's sometimes just trying to throw one of his guys a "solid". Get a guy so,e positive PR. Get a guy he knows isn't going to play in the NBA some extra looks from good European clubs, etc.

I doubt he really believed Elston was an NBA player. He barely got off the bench at IU even when healthy.
