6'4" Guard Nick Zeisloft joins Hoosiers

I don't think anyone is arguing his numbers prior to getting to IU were good. They just don't matter anymore. Nick can be as good as he wants to be here. He's getting a fresh start, and everyone is optimistic that he will succeed.

What if he doesn't succeed to your expectations? Would you be alright with him having to make another fresh start since we are loaded with guards, two current players must leave, and we're still recruiting more guards?

I have my doubts that people would be saying the same things if Michigan or another school signed a role player from a bad team (yes, Illinois State was) in a bad conference (yes, the MVC was pretty weak).

Funny you should mention this (if I understand you correctly).

Michigan JUST SIGNED A D3 player to scholly, and I haven't read much (if any) criticism of it on this board at all:

If he can't be successful here then hopefully he can find success elsewhere.

But I'm guessing he finds his place here. I'll worry about your situation when it becomes relevant.

Duncan wasn't exactly a role player, he filled the stat sheet and shot 45% from beyond the arc and 67% from two.  Granted it was D3.  I said a role player, which Ziesloft was and hardly a standout shooter like he's being built up to be.  Would we be scared if Ziesloft went to a rival program?  Not at all.

For the record, I don't like Duncan's chances of making the transition either.  That's a big step up.

That UM hoops article attached said about Duncan, and I quote..."He’s an average athlete at the Division III level". His other D1 offers? Marist and Davidson.

Other top twenty programs do this for a great kid.

To say that I am pleased with the Nick Z signing is an understatement.

Average "athlete", in other words he's not a good athlete.  Okay, so he's not quick and can't jump.

This line is in there...."has interest and offers from Michigan, Davidson, Marist and a collection of ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, Atlantic 10, Ivy League, Patriot League and American East teams including Creighton."

The odds of this guy contributing to UM are slim to none, and we shouldn't expect a role player from the MVC to be much of a contributor at this level especially when he's only shown to be a decent shooter.  We've got people expecting him to contribute and be a dead eye shooter, that's not realistic based on his playing history.  Let's not build him up to be something he's never shown like we did with Evan Gordon.

Are we worried about D3 transfer Duncan Robinson torching us?  I'm not.  Would we be worried about role player Nick Ziesloft, Illinois State's 5th leading scorer (and they were a pretty crappy offense) on another team?  No.

I agree, no team will plan their defense around Nick. I think we ought to hope opposing teams think the same way. We should hope teams "sleep on Zoloft", forget about him and leave him open for the corner 3 or that they try to close out and he can hit a cutter like Troy heading to the basket. This kid wasn't necessarily brought in to be a sniper; he's a natural leader and he doesn't turn the ball over, two things that were sorely lacking last year. Crean brought him in and made him Yogi's roommate, likely hoping Nick can help him lead. Nick is a smart kid, a floor general; he anchored the zone at his last school and did the same for IU in Canada. He's the guy that'll take the hard charge for the team. He's the guy diving over cheerleaders or into opposing teams benches to save a possession. He's the guy hitting crunch time free throws. He won't be all conference, but he is all Hoosier.

Fair enough. Your glass is half empty, but your logic and consistentcy are impeccable

Im excited guys. We have an All Big Ten PG. We have a SG that may win FOTY in the conference. We have an experienced sniper in NZ. We have a bulldog wing that can overpower a lot of guards. We have a future All Big Ten guard in Johnson. I mean, I cant remember a backcourt at IU that was this deep. Guard play wins in College Basketball. The frontcourt is thin, but Perea, Davis, and Williams can make plays. Its not an elite front line but we've seen worse(Kline, Roberts, Ewing).

Eh, calling NZ an experienced sniper is stretching it

It is relevant as we don't have enough spots for commits plus we're still recruiting more guards on a team loaded with them. I wouldn't plant too many roots if I were him knowing were a guard heavy team. Maybe Crean already had the talk prior to him signing and its part of the master plan.

it's not a relevant conversation until this season plays out. Then we can talk about the value of his spot on the team.

Agree Woodson--Z3 is just so cool--calm--and collected---I like the experience, maturity, smarts, steady hand, and bulls eye shooting he brings to the team.

If IU keeps stats for shooting in practices---I bet they get broken this year.

I look forward to the team bringing its new shooting prowess to the games!

Also Crean noted that Zeisloft was ranked 54th in the entire nation in best turnover percentage. As in he has the reputation for not turning the ball over. That added to his shooting ability and I think he is a positive for this team.

Where's his minutes coming realisticly? I count 4 guards ahead of him and if Hoetzel shoots as well as last night, his size gets him minutes over Z for rebounding. Guards won't be our problem though, its our weak inside game and Hanner and Devin getting in foul trouble. But, I'm ready for them to play so a lot less speculation.

He gets his minutes as the fifth guard on a team that starts three guards. He finishes games on the court when we're ahead because he's 90% from the line and does not turn it over.

Up five with one minute to play and it's our ball?  Nick Zeisloft is on the court.

I like the sound of that at the end. I don't know how excited I am of three 6' guards or thereabouts starting with 6'7" and 6'8 underneath. That's why I have been advocating the return of the Hurryin Hoosiers. 100+ points per game.
