6'4" Guard Nick Zeisloft joins Hoosiers

Recommended Posts

Enough with the "crow eating" stuff. It doesn't do the discussion any justice. As was posted previously, the majority of the disappointment wasn't in Z specifically, but that we signed another guard when we needed a big man. We are all glad he's here but we would all probably trade him for Anthony Lee or Kasongo.

You're right! How dare anyone try and talk intelligently on a sports board

So when we clearly need a big man. When we swing and miss at several big man candidates. When we bring in 2 prior recruits that are underwhelming based on who we were targeting and then land another outside shooter instead of a big. When after a year where we finish at the bottom of the BT if we happen to question why CREAN would bring in yet another kid that does not address our need for a big - I fail to see how this is both unintelligent discussion and a slam on Nick.

I think it is reasonable to question our recruiting post Blackman and yet it is still possible to support Nick and hope he tears it up this year without needing to eat the proverbial crow

I agree with you that most people were saying we needed a big instead of Zeisloft. But, there were absolutely people on here saying that they didn't want Zeisloft and just quoted a bunch of numbers saying he was a mediocre MVC player without ever watching him play. I think those are the ones being referenced, not the people that wanted a big instead.

I remember a few mentioning a Missouri Valley player signing at IU was disgraceful. That seemed to be a very small minority and seems to be the same crowd that stirs that pot in every thread and never comes back to respond. There are some people who are stuck in the 1980s where MAC, MVC, and CUSA schools didn't get good recruits and didn't do very well in the NCAA tourney. Times have changed exponentially.  Just look at Butler when they were in  the Horizon or Wichita State who's in the MVC. How about George Mason in the Patriot or FGCU in whatever league they're in just for fun as well.

Thanks for remembering Hovadipo....I was specifically referring to those who trashed Z3 when he committed and pointing out the irony that once he actually played in Canada people felt better about him.  My point being---let them play a game before we rush to judgment about them.

That's it---some can disagree----that's fine ---but our players and potential recruits actually do read these boards and I want the boys to know that there actually are some fans rooting for them to be successful instead of predicting their transfers---and I do hope Z3 serves up a big ole plate of CROW to whoever trashed him and is questioning his worth before he even plays.

That's my opinion---I am entitled to it---and you are entitled to yours!

you're definitely right there!

The overall talent pool is usually lower, but mid-majors do get their share of talent.   DJ Balentine from Kokomo is with Evansville and he just had a monster sophmore year (multiple 25+ points a game).

See I have issues with trashing the players just as much as anyone. I think it was more than fair for people to question us adding another guard. But some people lumped those two groups together, which isn't fair or accurate. I'll add that the people talking about others eating crow because of the Canada trip probably should pump the breaks a bit.

Also, I've always considered telling others to eat crow to be kind of petty. Just my feeling on it

As others noted, the concern over adding Nick was twofold: 1) we needed a serviceable big man the most and crean instead brought in another guard and 2) if you are going to ignore the need for a serviceable big man and bring in another guard, do it because we had the opportunity to bring in a stud game changer that we just couldn't pass up, like a JBJ type. He is neither a serviceable big nor a stud game changer. He is a role player and that would be fine if it weren't for this glaring hole we have upfront

I was one that mentioned the MVC, but I never used the word 'disgraceful'.  I said he was a role player on a bad team in a bad conference, and that is 100% accurate.  He was a role player, Illinois State was a bad team, and the MVC was a bad conference (Wichita State was the only NCAA tourney team, ISU lost first round of the NIT, and their only other 20 game winner lost in the CIT first round).  I said he was the 5th leading scorer on a crappy offense, again accurate; he was, and they were (232nd in PPG, 317th in FG%).  I said he wasn't really a shooting specialist, a career 38% 3P% and playing more minutes his FG% and 3P% got worse from his freshman year.  I said I didn't see that translating well to this level, I didn't and don't and exhibition games mean absolutely nothing.

I said I couldn't understand bringing that in when it doesn't address a position of need, and as others have stated we needed a big not another guard.  I never used the word 'disgraceful' though.

My big question is where are his minutes coming? Unless we play a 3 guard lineup(which is obvious) and plan to press for 40 minutes, I just don't see him getting much smell at all. I see him 5 on guard depth chart, but we may end up with a four guard lineup and Troy at center. At least that's what I've told Troys mom which she seems to confirm my thinking. If that ends up happening, we will get absolutely killed on the boards which I expect anyway. Playing zone its hard to rebound combined with long shots. We lived and mostly died with the outside shot last year and it will be more of the same this year. Teams will let anyone but JB2 shoot and that's what we'll do.

I feel the same as you in many regards, and I am also worried about depth up front, however I'm really hoping that with so many guards we can really cause match up issues for opposing teams.  That and the hope that Hanner, Devin, Troy and Holt are enough to hold down the fort and create match up problems for other teams as well, and play defense without fouling a lot.

Bozich at ITH predicted plenty of minutes and maybe even starting minutes for Zeisloft.

based on what?

Idk what you're asking. Here's the source:

"Kwang on the premium forum writes: Alex, what is your best guess for a starting line-up and rotation?

Best guess for a starting lineup would be Ferrell, Blackmon Jr., Johnson, Williams and Mosquera-Perea with Nick Zeisloft, Emmitt Holt, Devin Davis and Stanford Robinson as the primary rotation players off the bench. It wouldn’t, however, surprise me to see Zeisloft starting over Johnson. Max Hoetzel would probably be the next name I’d toss into the mix for a rotation spot. — Alex Bozich"
