Exactly!!!! He is a very particular coach who wants a certain roster and is building a program not a singular team. The same people that are complaining about us not getting anyone would also complain if we got grant gelon type players

A new coach at a middle of the pack B1G program tried to convince assistant coaches that he had ties with to leave their current position at programs where they have been to the Final 4 and Elite 8 multiple times since the last time IU had and fans are mad they couldn’t pull them.  lol talk about sunshine pumping.   Take a look at where the program you are invested in is at and other then money (which the schools they are at currently matched) why are they moving from programs that are rolling to a program that is starting from scratch.  Pretty big leap of faith.  Good on DeVries for trying to bring them along but come on people really think someone was leaving Bama right now for IU in 2025 not the 1980s

lol Coach Cig brought like his entire staff and a whole bunch of his players. It’s completely different from what we’ve seen from DD.

I am a little worried with the assistants getting the vision/pitch and passing.  It’s still too early to tell on the players.  
For me these are yellow flags (that’s a caution flag for those that don’t watch racing).  Not really the level of red flags yet.
CDD’s pressers/interviews, hires, and slowish start on the roster have not gave me the warm and fuzzies… but what do I know?  It is still early.  This is just a random opinion if people aren’t worried that’s cool too.

Kelsey Is a similar situation. But, I think he’s corny. But that doesn’t matter. The recruits like him. His swag. He’s got something going for him.

Pope? UL, UK , Indiana all supposedly with similar resources. Pope is just a genuine dude. No swag. But he get dudes, pretty easy. They buy what he’s selling.

DeVries? Idk. I guess he’s gotta find his lane. He’s not a Pope. He’s not a Kelsey, that’s for sure.

He’s a blue collar coach supposedly with white collar resources. It’s kinda a mismatch. I think DeVries only works if he rolls up his sleeves and works and gets guys like him. It might work. But it’s not splashy and it might not work. No pizazz. Making no waves. Idk. I’m trying to talk myself into this.

Texas Tech and Bama will once again be preseason top 6 teams and people expected a new coach taking over a team that didn’t make the tourney to take their top assistants because the new coach had a prior relationship with them.  Smart business decision staying with their current teams instead of taken a chance with your friend on a rebuild

I'm a bit anxious but I will say this - i was one of the dumb ***** that was convinced winning the off season ment we were gonna get at least a share of the big ten.

 

I'm gonna hope for the best but I'm also not gonna react too much either way til December.

Yup.

We may as well not have a season at this point. Lets just crown the preseason number 1 NCAAB team as champions.

Will save everyone lots of money. Since preseason rankings are the gold standard and always predicting the winner with 1000% accuracy

Yeah, and most people will leave their job for better pay. Not always, but usually. Especially if you like the boss, atmosphere etc. We genuinely thought we were gonna get these guys. That’s where the long hold up was. It seems we ultimately didn’t want to pay them enough to convince them to leave.

Self, Calipari and some others are making 8-10 million a year plus staff. We are paying 4-5 for DeVries. There’s a lot of extra money floating around that goes a long way in convincing an assistant to take a job. If we “underpay” on a coach, overpay on the assistants like was said to be the case.

It’s honestly been a mess since the coach search started if we are being honest with ourselves.

Looks like he landed 2 assistant coaches from sitting power 5 teams.  For a middle of a pack B1G team in my opinion that’s a good step.   Adam’s is known as a recruiter with Midwest and Indiana ties which is huge and Kenny Johnson is known as big time recruiter.  A lot more realistic move for IU to steal him instead of 2 assistants from Elite 8 level teams that their programs can match in money.

C'mon. He has little to nothing to close with. He's an unknown to a lot of these kids. No national exposure yet. And all they know of Indiana is the recent crap storm it's been. So no, he's not closing on a lot of guys right now. He does in fact have his work cut out for him and I think it's time to align the expectation to match.

I will be the one to pour gasoline on this fire since we all enjoy a good meltdown between bits of good news… don’t watch McCollum’s intro press conference at Iowa if you want to feel better about our hire right now. DDV is going to have to earn this in a very competitive B10. Time will tell how he stacks up against his peers in the conference. I think it’s early to worry about the roster. It’s also fair to observe not landing targets when it happens. However it’s still the guys first month and he has coached 0 games here so it’s going to be a very tough sell for a lot of kids. You land the right guys this cycle, rated wherever they are, based on their ability to play a role in winning basketball. You have a year like UL or UK, you recruit like they are in their second cycle. DDV is a good ball coach and we can’t just buy players so easily in this environment. Gotta trust the process. Boring offseason. More football news to help pass the time and fill your IU sports fix. Not sweating anything until I see a team on the court.
