Some of you complain about the Big Ten not being able to compete in the tournament due to antiquated style of play. But as soon as you have a coach that is attempting to run a more modern style of play with a modern roster you begin to complain about the lack of big men. It doesn't make sense.

Let Coach worry about who is playing what position. If we see issues next year, we can voice our complaints in the "Fire Coach Devries" thread. :)

You still need to get through the Big 10 season. We’re not going to play through the post like a Mike Woodson team, but you still need big men who can hit the boards and provide interior defense. “Modern roster” doesn’t mean no bigs. You want a versatile roster that can play multiple ways. We won’t need defensive bigs for every game. Sometimes we’ll be fine with Bailey at the 5. But there will be matchups throughout the season that we’ll want big men for. And it’s not even solely about guarding other teams’ post players. You also want bigs for rim protection against guards/wings coming into the paint.

Shows me we are committed to getting a shot blocker, so that’s a good sign in my opinion

Does this mean we are not confident in the others we are after or maybe the others are because we were not confident in getting him.

Again, I think the concern with the 5 spot this coming year is entirely based on the defensive end. Not every good 5 is a high usage, post centric player and there are plenty of bigs with size who can defend the interior and protect the rim without demanding a paint touch every time down.

Sure, ideally we’d land an elite defender/rebounder/rim runner but it’s not the necessity that people are acting like it is. “We need it for the B1G”, for… TKR? Cluff? Those guys still have to guard our guys.

As a simple example: Houston was in the championship game and their tallest player who got minutes was 6’8”. It’s completely reasonable to go into the season with less size and to still be a very good team.

If we have the ability to land an elite guy cool, otherwise I’d rather run with Bailey at the 5 than getting some guy who fits a mold but is less skilled overall.

Saw Federiko is asking for 2M and a lot of people do not think he is worth that, Baba Miller slow playing a lot and is in no rush

I hope coach has a plan for teams that have an advantage in the paint...which will be many at this point...

I have zero doubt that is on his mind and there is a plan (scheme, recruits, etc)

If our new coach doesn’t realize the potential post issues with our current lineup, issues that are clear even to internet couch warriors/coaches like us, then we made a massive hiring error.

Again, I'm not fixated on height. I've never mentioned height in any of these arguments. Houston had three 6'8-6'9 interior bigs who could all wall up opposing defenders, protect the rim, and were relentless on the glass on both ends of the floor. That's what we need. Sam Alexis (who is also 6'8) is the only player on the roster that even comes close to fitting that mold. That's not enough. Bailey isn't a serviceable 5 for a P5 team for 15 mpg, let alone 25-30...he doesn't have any of those defensive traits.

I use names like Baba Miller and Federiko Federiko because they fit that mold...they just so happen to be 7 foot tall. Those are names that have been directly linked with Indiana.

If that number is accurate passing on a kid doesn’t get easier than this.

Nobody has really explained what a “modern style of play is” and how that equals not needing a good big. Just because Woody was stuck in the past and loved bigs it doesn’t mean they aren’t important. Good bigs are still dominant at all levels, including the current best player in the world.

Florida had multiple guys play the center spot who were really good this year. Before that Uconn had Clingon and Sanogo.  Purdue has went 4th, 3rd, 1st, 1st, 3rd in the B1G mostly by dominating the paint.  Michigan State won the conference this year and absolutely sucked at shooting 3’s but they attacked the paint relentlessly.

The truth is you need both good players in the post and on the perimeter. You can’t win with just guards. IU’s problem is that they rarely ever have both. And the last two times that we did (Yogi and Bryant and Oladipo and Zeller) we won the Big Ten despite what I would consider pretty mediocre coaching.

You can’t just go into a season with a giant hole in your roster and declare you are playing some new way and expect it will all work out.  I mean we CAN do that, but it will have predictable results.

(With that said, if that happens next year it’s not the end of the world, imo, since it’s year 1 of CDD building his roster.)

You not serious, right?

It’s the first year of a rebuild.
Overreact much?

Some have explained it, see Houston's team et al. Here, DeVries is building a team for perimeter/wing play, with multiple players who can shoot, get out and run for speed of play and transition D. So far we have multiple players with good size and length at forward/wing in Dorn (G/F 6'7), DeVries (6/7), Alexis (6'8), Sisley (6'7) and Baily (6''10), not counting Goode (at least yet, 6'7), and Guard (Miles 6'6), Wilkerson (6'5) followed by Connerway (6'3) Enright (6'2) and Drake (6'2). The team is built to run and gun, and spread the floor with a combination of shooting and get-to-the-rim play. Adding a shot-blocking 6'8-plus type guy I think is expected, but (imo) we do not need a 'post' player. and we don't have 'just guards," we have multiple forwards already and aren't done.
