I would kill for Ace Baldwin as IU's point guard.

That being said, Ace's level of competition at VCU in the A-10 was significantly stronger than Walker's competition at Eastern Kentucky in the A-SUN.

That is true, but that doesn't mean Walker can't really helps us. Big big jump.from FR to SO for Walker.

Agree.  Walker was first team all conference as a sophomore, though.

My expectation is that Walker will either:

1.  Go to a P5 and serve as a role player and backup point guard.

2.  Go from low major Eastern Kentucky to a mid major and compete and likely win a starting job

It strikes me that there are a lot of players who would be an upgrade over what IU has currently, but aren't good enough to get IU to where it wants to be. My sense is that Walker is one of those guys if depended on for more than ~15 minutes/game in a backup role. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, I think that's the inherent danger here. Nearly ANY guards are going to look good here. I mean, IU had basically the worst backcourt of any major P5 team last year. Are we talking about comparative advantage here or are we talking about getting players who will actually compete for a minimum of a Sweet 16 or Elite 8?

Two completely different conversations...

I’m not sure on Walker but you’re overall assessment rings true. We’re going to need a really good point/combo guard to make this team much better.

Knowing Woody, 2-4 are set with the guys we have returning. It seems unlikely we get a 5 as good as TJD or even Ware. So that leaves the third guard spot and bench roles. Not to minimize the bench production, but I think without nailing that lead guard spot from the portal we won’t be much improved. A league average type player probably doesn’t cut it.

If our plan is to go:

Transfer PG

Galloway

Mgbako

Reneau

Transfer C

God help us all. That transfer PG better be in contention for the Naismith and Mgbako has to become a two-way dog.

What's sad is that MM is the perfect modern day college 4. Does Woody not see that?

No. He doesn't - Woody is completely unaware of trends taking place in the game.

That's probably what people should prepare for. They had a chance to move away from 2 bigs last year and doubled down on it instead. IIRC they sold Mgbako's family on him playing the 3 as well.

EDIT: Maybe they add another guard and bring Galloway off the bench but I don't see them deviating from that much.

Threading the needle on meeting needs and maximizing talent may be hard.  Do you offer a pg like Gillespie from Belmont the starting pg job to lock him in now, or do you wait and try going big game hunting later?  Would a Gillespie or Walker come here without playing time guarantees if we offered $$$ and the chance to compete with Cupps, Leal, and Newton for back-up guard minutes?

He played him in that role a little bit this year, but it seemed to be very sparingly. Iirc, mostly it was due to foul trouble, Banks being relegated to the end of the bench, and Walker being bad certain games.

Woody has been very rigid with both his lineups and sub pattern. I have trouble seeing him all of a sudden switching to a 4 out system and then adjusting his defense to having no rim protector. Ideally he would though. Then we’re shooting for more big time guards in the portal just based on double the openings and bench roles.

A bunch of legit, interesting, on-topic conversation and then……..this.

It's nauseating. And watch him pivot too in a couple weeks.

The narrative will go from "Woodson can't close" to "Well at the end of the day they are still being coached up by Woodson" after IU lands some good portal guards.

Misery loves company I guess.

It would have been nice to have McNeely still and be looking for a pass first, defense first PG to get the ball to Galloway, McNeely, Mbako, and Reneau for open 3's. This team needs an elite defensive PG more than offense. Once our backcourt D is broken down, we're going to be ugly with Reneau and Mbako guarding the 3-5.
