Transfer Portal w IU Interest

Go look at the center rankings on 247. It’s bleak. We’re down to mid major backups.

Also comparing last year and this year doesn’t make sense because of the house settlement, which Dolson was very focused on (until his new coach didn’t sign anyone for more than a week).

Your point about portal rankings is fair, but it is somewhat predictive (and we’ve whiffed on several of the highly ranked players we pursued).

House settlement hasn’t been finalized. Every school has “whiffed” on players. It’s not who we missed, it’s who we get. Let it play out.

Is that public information? I missed that if so.

Here’s part of the quote—the longer interview, which I heard on Twitter and can’t find now, made it clear IU was the school.

That just says they wanted to talk, not that he was the preferred candidate. I’d hope Dolson was talking to several coaches. We know he got feedback from McDermott about DeVries as well.

Doesn’t mean he was the first choice.  You are assuming.  Just like you are assuming with everything else.  My dad used to have a phrase….you assume you make an @$$ out of u and me.

Osterman is hyper cautious but said in multiple podcasts he thought IU’s roster would be mostly done by April 7. Why would he say that? Someone (Dolson) told him that was how they expected it would work.

It hasn’t worked that way. Maybe it will all be fine! But the way people here are mocking and policing legit concerns is crazy. This has been a dispiriting start. It’s ok to say that. We are not living up to Dolson’s own plan.

Goodman and others (Curry Hicks Sage) said McCollum was the first choice. So did @Chris007 and others here.

You all are really, really invested in enforced optimism.

Again nobody has filled an entire roster in two weeks.  Let’s use our heads here instead of jumping off bridges. All the schools that had to do this took a month or more.

IU landed the number 1 center in the portal and payed a bunch and IU missed the tourney

Washington landed the number 2 center in the portal and payed him a bunch of money and Washington missed the tourney.

Oregon landed the 43 rated center in the portal and probably paid some money and he contributed to a winning team that made the tourney.    Transfer rankings are really hard to gauge.  I hope a head coach can sift through the mud and get people that actually  will contribute to a winning team instead of chasing a number

At this point, can we just call him Good Osobor?

I have said this for a long time.  I know McCollum and have known him for a long time.  He wasn’t offered the job.  I told everyone a long time ago that he and others were contacted about the IU job way before Woodson was canned.  Check my posting history.  Nobody knew what was happening with IU.  I listened to Curry Hicks podcasts and he was saying at the last couple weeks it was DeVries or some candidate that was so big it wasn’t getting out.  Now you are just making **** up.  He even said he had no clue what is happening at IU.

I have zero sources, and I believe you that McCollum was not offered the job. Thanks for sharing that. But maybe that was because Dolson wanted to move quicker. That decision, plus the Thamel and Osterman comments, suggest Dolson really wanted to emphasize speed.

What has DeVries done with that head start? I think it’s fair to judge him by Dolson’s hints about April 7, etc.

Again, thanks for sharing your intel on McCollum. I hope you’re right and I’m overreacting, etc!

In defense of Osterman and potentially Dolson, at the time I think everyone really believed there’d be a rush to sign players by 4/7 due to the House settlement. Zach could’ve known that lots of ways other than just being told by the AD.

But then it started to become clear that what has come to pass would, which is the House settlement is still coming but wouldn’t be finalized 4/7.

In my opinion Zach might’ve wanted those back, and maybe should’ve been as loud about the change as he was about the chance. But that’s not what happened.

What did May and Kelsey do last year?  I mean we had zero players and he brought in a top recruit in his son….top 40 player who is a shooting PF/Center……he brought in a top 25 PG prospect.  We have Sisley.  That’s way more than Michigan or Louisville had in the same time frame.  Louisville didn’t even have a top 75 recruit coming in their transfer class.  You just don’t know and we saw last year what signing one of the best portal class meant.  Jack ****.  Let him get his type of players and see what happens.  What has Iowa done with the portal under McCollum?  Less than what DeVries has done.  My biggest problem with Ben was recruiting and stated that.  He hasn’t had to do it at this level. Let’s just see what happens.

True. And as of April 10, our record is exactly the same as Michigan’s and Louisville’s and every other team in the P5… gotta be patient and let the process develop. Even KwaC knows that :)

I wouldn’t characterize either of the recruiting misses as “whiffs.” Both situations included extenuating circumstances. Had it just been that we were outbid, or a guy flat out stated that he preferred someone else, that’s a whiff. When a guy’s mom has significant health issues, or when he has family connected to a city that the guy can play in front of— in quite possibly his last season playing ball, those aren’t whiffs.

Glad for those two players who seem to have their priorities straight and realize that family is the most important factor in their lives

People put way too much stock into the idea of Osterman as Dolson’s “mouthpiece.” You can’t attribute everything Osterman says or does to being driven by Dolson. There’s no reason to believe the AD was trying to subliminally reassure fans that the portal would be taken care of before April 7.
