Yep. He was also given Fife and after firing him just promoted Walsh.

He has shown just as much effort in selecting his assistant coaches as he's shown for all other aspects of the job.

I suspect he put more effort into selecting the location for his "Fella's Lounge" on the Southside of Bloomington than his IUBB staff. King's gotta have a luxurious place to smoke cigars, drink whisky, and have his wife order pizza while recruits are in town (with the assistants across town).

The whole time during that story, all I could think was I wonder type of pizza Woody orders in Btown and why it definitely is dominos.

Simple.  Hunter was already at IU and was known as a good recruiter so Woody didn’t really have to do a search.   Rosemond was recommended by his good buddy Payne so again Woody didn’t really have to do a search.    When you don’t have the college contacts that most head coaches would have you could make an argument he went the route of having to do less work in the hiring process as some would do

Well, if there's anyone who knows all about "doing less work", it's Woodson.

Recruiting? Nah.

Teaching fundamentals? Nope.

Showing up at dinner with recruit? Can't be bothered.

Reaching out to committed recruits who fall in his lap? Not going to happen.

Playing cards and having a cigar and a glass of wine with the boys? Sure, I'm all in.

Never said Woodson is not to blame.  Get rid of that argument.  There is none.

I made the point that both Woodson and IU administration have seriously botched this.

Hiring a guy with zero college experience is beyond incompetence. It really is. Then throwing 6 million at the problem thinking that would fix it. From the admins to the boosters they all are to blame for this fissco.

And there is zero chance the king makes the ncaa thus year without going at least 11-7 in ths big ten going forward. He has zero good wins

True but in all fairness, Woody did better when IU helped him with this… Matta, Fife etc. He didn’t like them and pushed them out but those were his most successful seasons

My comment had nothing to do with Woody specifically but rather all coaches. No head coach should have assistants put in place by others.

There's plenty of blame to go around... but Woodson refused the help and refused to bring anyone with college experience in to assist... instead, we get sleepy Armond Hill. At least with Thad Motta and Dane Fife, the administration gave him some experienced help.

Not sure about how the assistants (Hunter, Rosemond) were selected/retained... clearly Woodson had NO contacts from the college game that he knew and/or were willing to come along for the ride...

He had no clue on day one. Four years later, he still has no clue. His schemes are from the '80s, and his results are telling.

I’m not defending Woody or anything that has happened. It’s been a gigantic cluster.

That being said….the “buck” should stop with the head coach so the head coach should bring in his own team. Although I understand why the administration wanted to bring in Matta  (now head coach at Butler) and Fife ( now coaching nowhere but for some inexplicable reason a few posters want him to be the interim coach because……….he has IU tie’s??  LOL LOL, LOL) but the coaching staff should 100% be the head coaches decision .

Agree, that’s the way to do it.

Personally, I want the AD left alone and responsible to pick the bball coach.  The bball coach also needs to be left alone to pick his staff.  This creates clear accountability in the organization, which is important.

March 12, 2025.

The earliest possible date for Mike Woodson's possible/probable/please-God-let-it-be last game as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers.

87 days.

If things get really bad it can technically be March 8th since the bottom 3 of the B1G don't qualify for the tournament.

I realize there is zero chance of this happening but why couldn’t his last day be tomorrow?

Why is March 8th the magic date ?

Is there a money/contract reason ?

I agree that the head coach should pick his assistance but this head coach when he came in all the coaches he knew were from 40 years ago and I don’t think any of them are around anymore.

He is going to get to finish the season out.

Ah yes, I forgot about that. The plot thickens.

I agree, I prefer that it was yesterday but we know that didn’t happen

Yep, I’m sure that will be the case and logically I don’t really see the advantage of having an interim coach for a few months. If anything, if that coach has some success, that could muck up the works.

We need the coaching staff to be blown up and for a new coach to put his fingerprint on the entire organization. In this era of NIL, etc there is zero reason to think anything/anyone from the past needs to be retained nor do we need to worry about which players might leave.

We need a full makeover and the coach should report directly to the AD not some dude on the BOT.  Pam W, as president, has done a lot for the football program but how in the hell did she sign off on Woody not reporting to the AD?  REALLY DUMB.

EDIT: It was pointed out that Pam W was not yet the president when Woody was hired so it was the Australian idiot that allowed Woody to report to the BOT rather than the AD.

The focus on the AD is football. Needs to concentrate on NIL funding and donations through the publicity of making the playoffs. Firing Woodson creates a distraction away from football. Late February at the earliest.

Whitten was named IU President about a month after King Michael I was coronated.

I think she inherited this mess.  It’s tricky with the Board being her boss and she has been under pressure a bit the past few years.  Hopefully when Quinn is gone she plays her part in making sure the chain of command is reestablished and people aren’t meddling with Scott’s job.

He didn’t need to hire people he knew..

If (IF) one put in the work it isn’t that hard to put together a list of on-the-rise assistants, that are good recruiters, and interview them. Most would jump at the chance to have IU on their resume and a big pay bump.

And yes, I will save many posters time by saying Woody was probably too lazy to do that.
