They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

So does a 5 million dollar roster budget. What a good coach/could have been with the current roster will really be an IU mystery for me. I really believe if you swapped Woody for someone with a good system like Mark Pope, this team is top-10 right now. Such a colossal waste of a season in so many ways.

That’s exactly why i was hoping Cheaney would’ve taken over as an interim.  He doesn’t want the job full time / long term, but would’ve loved to see if he could’ve rallied the troops for a couple months.

2 things on that: 1) maybe the single most compelling thing about a Coach Brad Stevens is the simply ungodly amount of money that would produce. Hovadipo mentioned in a side conversation that from an NIL perspective IU would be the Dodgers. He’s right. 2) That’s something that some with kind of an old fashioned view of a Stevens program need to get their minds around. It wouldn’t be built on finding under the radar instate Gordon Hayward types, though I’m sure there’d be the occasional kid like that. But it’s gonna be the most talented and, resultingly, expensive rosters he can construct. And I don’t mean that as criticism in any way. That’s the world as it is. Frankly, that is the most interesting single thing in his favor for me.

This and he has high-level experience dealing with the consequences of this kind of roster, as a coach and exec — and even if IU creates some sort of GM position, BS as HC would still be top dog in the org.

To paraphrase the late, great, Anthony Bourdain, the Bill Selfs and Jon Scheyers  of the world would take 1 look at the resources that guy would have available and $hit their cages.

Isnt he out of eligibility by now?

Seems like he’s injured and sitting out this year, during his Covid 5th year.  I guess the NCAA will grant him a re-do.  Doesn’t seem like 100% but also kinda does.

Also, do we want him?  I personally think he’s overrated but coaching makes a difference.

So the big name sees woodson doing his job and wants to cook with him next year. Quinn is a happy camper on his iu funded private jet.

And the beauty of Stevens is that lots of organizations are bankrolled, but only the winners spend that bankroll effectively. He clearly has a next-level eye for picking better personnel options when there are many.

Not sure coaches have a choice anymore

I get that part, but it just seems that some of the players are paid a little higher, there is no market value, more of a free for all

At the risk of getting into the weeds on this...

I thought I read that NIL will be "real" payment for endorsements... and that the "revenue sharing" was for distributing cash to players... did  I get that wrong? Curious how that kind of arrangement will be received by the kids chasing bags...

Stu or someone posted the GM numbers last week. I was also surprised how low he’s getting paid.

Crazy to think how much of a pay cut Stevens took to be the GM.

Brad Stevens' salary as head coach of the Boston Celtics was in the high-six to low-seven million dollar range. The exact terms of his contracts were not disclosed, but he signed multiple extensions over the years.
